I remember time when i watched ff7 film, without playing a game. Blind watching. And i remember how i started to love Cloud and Tifa. Remember how Aerith laughed when she said - why you all call me mother? And i remember credit scene. No idea where in the hell they see clerith there. Yes Aerith is there, but that time many years ago after wathing the film i actually though - maybe she has a role of the mother figure? that`s what i felt then. and yes, still don`t see clerith
Perfectly logical response to watching Advent Children.
Aerith really does give off this Mother Earth vibe in AC.
1. Aerith gives off a Mother Earth vibe because she saved the Planet from destruction in FFVII. She also healed all citizens of the Planet from Geostigma in AC/ACC using a combination of the Lifestream (the life force of the Planet) plus rain water
2. Aerith has these abilities because she is part Cetra. The Cetra are able to commune with the planet. She is not human.
3. Cloud is also not human. He has been injected with the cells of Jenova and inundated with high levels of Mako (the Lifestream), which affect his perception of the world and gives him superhuman abilities.
4. Cloud’s bond to Aerith is due to the high levels of Mako (Lifestream) in him. Since Aerith is able to commune with the Lifesteram, she is also able to commune with Cloud due to the high levels of Mako in him. Nomura has even said that Aerith lives on inside of Cloud because of this. .Here’s a link to that interview:
http://i.imgur.com/JGGnu0c.gifv
The following is a screenshot:
That interview can be seen on the Advent Children DVD. It says this:
Nomura: “The words “memetic legacy” are used a lot in the film…but in Advent Children, rather than focusing on memories we wanted to show that consciousness is what lives on. We took the ending of the game and expanded on that idea. Even if they’re dead, their consciousness is still with us. As for Cloud…he sees Aerith several times throughout the film. It’s not that he sees her because he feels her presence. He sees her because her consciousness…lives on inside him.” (Nomura; Distance Interview)
A detailed explanation can be found in this post: Aerith is Dead…
5. When Nomura says that Aerith lives on inside of Cloud, he means that Cloud and Aerith’s spirits are joined by the Lifestream in an eternal bond as soulmates. A detailed explanation is in this post: Aerith is Dead….
6. Aerith specifically says in the Maiden Who Travelled the Planet (an official novella released by SE) that Aerith loves Cloud more than Zack:
Aerith was in even greater pain when she thought about Cloud. She also had good feelings towards him. At first, she thought he somehow had some similarities to her first love. Even so, his looks, voice and personality weren’t similar and he also made her think of him as a mysterious person… But it soon didn’t matter. She loved him much more than her first love. Cloud was her hero and he couldn’t get away from danger. She saw him as someone full of confidence, cool and had the impression that he would disappear in an instant if she took her eyes off him. She wanted to stay by his side forever if she could. She really wanted to.
7. Aerith and Zadk being together in the Lifestream means nothing because Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge are also together in the Lifestream and they are just friends.
8. When Cloud says, “I’m not alone… mot anymore” and smiles at the end of AC/AC, he means that he is no longer alone because he has found Aerith again. He has felt alone without her for the last two years, but he no longer feels alone now because he found her again in AC/ACC. This is explained in more detail at the following post: Aerith is Dead….
Other interpretations are possible, but the Clerith viewpoint is fully backed by quotes from the creators, the gamelore of FFVII and the script of the game.
1. Ok
2. She is human. Humans are just cetra who lost the ability to speak to the planet and all that jazz.
3. Cloud despite being enhanced is still human. I have no clue why you are saying him and Aerith are not human.
4. How is Aerith able to commune with everyone else then? And Aerith does not literally live inside of Cloud. Just stop it. For your own sake.
5. Did you hurt yourself making that logical leap? Nomura says nothing of the sort. And you would think this would be kind of a big deal if Aerith was literally fused to Clouds soul. Strange how the last we see of her she is leaving with Zack. Shouldn’t she be leaping into Cloud?
6. I don’t care about Maiden. Benny does not write the story of FFVII.
7. Why don’t we see them then? Surly ACC could have included them right?
8. Cloud smiled before seeing Aerith AND ZACK. He smiled at the children. He returned a shy smile to Tifa. He was alone for a short time during and before the movie in self imposed exile. You have zero support for this 2 years nonsense.
In fact let’s post that ACC story playback shall we?
The place where he awakens— That is Cloud’s Promised Land As he sleeps, Cloud hears two voices. The voices of two people very dear to him, who are no longer with him. Playfully and kindly, they give him a message: he doesn’t belong here yet. When he awakes, there was his friends. There were the children, freed from their fatal illness. Tifa and Marlene, and Denzel asking for Cloud to heal his Geostigma– his family were waiting. Engulfed in celebration, he realizes where he is meant to live. He realizes that he was able to forgive himself. And when he turns around— “she” is starting to leave. Together with the friend who had given Cloud his life. Cloud no longer has to suffer in loneliness… And so they too go back to where they belong.
Funny how this paints a vividly different picture from the “clerith perspective”.
Cloud surrounded by friends and family forgives himself and he realizes where he is meant to live. And since he is no longer suffering in loneliness Aerith and Zack LEAVE. Nothing in there about “finding Aerith”. Also strange how it’s Aerith AND Zack every time they are mentioned. While Tifa Marlene and Denzel are separated out as his family.
You mean it’s funny how my perspective is different than yours? And since I think differently from you, that means I’m wrong? Actually, Nomura has said that’s not what he\ intended:
Tetsuya Nomura: “AC is a piece of work made by Japanese people. In Hollywood movies, I think there is a tendency where the meaning of all the scenes have to be expressed clearly but, this isn’t something like that. With our work, the viewer is free to decide how they interpret or enjoy it. The staff has their own answers to all the scenes in the movie such as the angel statue that makes an appearance many times. But, even if someone who has watched it interprets it differently, then that is just another answer. I guess “comparing answers” with friends is one of the ways you can enjoy the movie. I think AC is a movie that makes those who have watched it, want to talk about it with others.“ ~FFVII AC Prologue Book
A very similar statement to the first one was said by Nomura specifically in reference to the Love Triangle in an interview with Dorimaga magazine, which you can find here: reference to the Love Triangle in an interview with Dorimaga magazine in November, 2005 (after the release of Advent Children):
A Final Fantasy VII fan interviewed Tetsuya Nomura for Dorimaga magazine and asked “How many girls has Sephiroth ever loved?”. In reaction, Nomura spoke evasively in anticipation of more questions regarding Cloud and Tifa’s love life, which have nothing to do with Sephiroth. Tetsuya Nomura: What kind of question is that? I’ve never thought about it. Honestly, I don’t care who loves whom. I think you could imagine the scenarios that we don’t mention however you want to. You could enjoy talking about that with friends. For example, I was frequently asked if there had been romantic relationship between Tifa and Cloud for two years, after FF7 ended, but I don’t have any clue. ~Dorimaga magazine; interview with Nomura; November, 2005

If you read the credits of FFVII as well as the game manual, you will see that Nomura actually wrote the original story with Sakaguchi, so don’t think the story is really by Nojima and Kitase. In fact, Nojima even states that main aspects of the plot were determined by staff collaboration rather than by any specific staff member:
Nojima: …Back in those days [during the production of FFVII}, a lot of different tasks would be going on simultaneously during production, so there were a lot of cases like that where the other staff would influence each other. All the important stuff was usually decided by talking it over in the smoking room (laughs). Nowadays since you’ve got the voice acting to record the scenario needs to be done first, so it’s turned into quite a lonesome task. ~Nojima, FFVII 10th Anniversary Ultimania, from Creator Discussion pg. 8-13 - source: thelifestream.net
Furthermore, Nojima goes on to state that at the time the HW scene was written (by Katou, not Nojima), none of the staff thought the HW scene would be considered important:
~FFVII 10th Anniversary Ultimania, from Creator Discussion pg. 8-13 - source: thelifestream.net
Simple: If the creative staff of FFVII didn’t think that the HW scene would be considered important to viewers, then it’s obvious that they didn’t intend for it to be considered important.
What this boils down to is that Nomura has repeated on more than one occasion that there is no “correct” way to interpret what happened in AC/ACC, and that the FFVII Compilation is a product of staff collaboration where more than one answer is possible.
In more direct answer to some of your statements, you say that Aerith leaves with Zack. Well, if she indeed leaves, then why do we see her twice without Zack in Calling? If she has left, why is she in Calling?
Furthermore, Aerith specifically states in the official novella Maiden Who Travelled the Planet published by SE that she loves Cloud more than Zack. I quoted that passage for you in my last post.
You’re thinking in terms of a world like ours, not the world of fantasy and magic where FFVII takes place. You can’t weigh what happens In the FFVII Collaboration the same way you experience\ our world. If you had read the article I linked you to called Aerith is Dead…. You’d see that it is indeed possible for Aerith to live on inside of Cloud’s body due to the high levels of Mako (Lifestream) present in him. That is possible in the world of FFViI, even though it is not possible in our own world.
Are you aware that even Tres Dias believes that Cloud loves/loved Aerith? You can find his statement to that effect HERE. He does go on to say that Cloud moves on with Tifa, which I disagree with - I think that is totally optional myself. But I also think that the LTD is in fact unresolved.
I support Clerith because that’s how I interpret the Love Triangle. I’ve discussed my ideas and beliefs at length with other Cloti supporters, including Tres Dias, EnigmaPhenomenon, Ryushikaze, Quexinos, and others. We never resolved those debates - they are aware that I disagree, and I am aware that they disagree. But we don’t debate it any more simply because we know we can’t change each other’s minds.
Therefore, I will let you believe what you want about the LTD. All I ask is that you stop harassing Cleriths just because we disagree with you. The LTD has been argued for ages, and both sides still disagree. We know all your arguents already. You’re not telling us anything new or anything we haven’t heard before.
You won’t change our minds, so let it rest already. Go ahead and believe what you want to believe and let us believe what we believe. You won’t change our minds. We still believe that Cloud loves Aerith.

Do you like Final Fantasy? If so, what's your opinion on CloTi (Cloud x Tifa), Zerith (Zack x Aerith) and Clerith (Cloud x Aerith)?
I like all three, but definitely ship CloTi/Zerith more after Advent Children and Crisis Core.
Cloud x Aerith all the way!!!

Awesome work on the Contest, Mina, and the entries are terrific. Thank you!!
Aerith is Dead...
I have to ask…. so what? When people say that Cloud will move on because Aerith is dead, they are ignoring the fact that FFVII is a game based in a magical world where neither Cloud or Aerith are human. The concepts and gamelore surrounding a Jenova enhanced mutant like Cloud in addition to the abilities and powers of a Cetra like Aerith in reality make it possible for the two to be united as soulmates for eternity. This article reviews the FFVII script and gamelore to explain how this is possible in the magical world of FFVII.
An article by Anastar, Angelalex242, Starsong, and Kuraudo
submitted to the Cerith 20th Anniversary Contest
from two official commercials produced by SquareSoft to advertise FFVII
Introduction
The first thing many people say when told that Cloud loves Aerith is: “Aerith is dead - so it’s obvious that Cloud moves on with Tifa.”
However, there are several problems with this argument. In the first place, not everyone moves on after the death of a loved one, either here on Earth or on Planet Gaia. In fact, there are a number of characters in Final Fantasy VII who haven’t moved on after the death of a loved one, including Barret, Dyne, Bugenhagen, Elmyra, and Vincent. If other characters in FFVII haven’t moved on after the death of a loved one, why assume that Cloud would?
In the second place, Final Fantasy VII actually happens in a magical world of fantasy where the principles of life and death simply aren’t the same as they are here on Earth. Nojima certainly wasn’t talking about Planet Earth when he said in the Reunion Files: “Since Sephiroth exists, Aerith must exist. There was no doubt about that one. (laughs)” Nojima was talking about the fantasy world of Final Fantasy VII, where two of the main characters are spirits who continue to exist after death. Both spirits are able to interact with as well as to affect the lives of individuals living on Planet Gaia. As an example, Aerith interacts with children in both FFVII and AC/ACC after her death and she also heals all citizens having Geostigma with a healing rain in AC/ACC after her death. These actions, as well as Nojima’s statement, confirm that Aerith actually does continue to exist in some form.
Furthermore, it has to be taken into account that Cloud is in actuality a Jenova mutant infused with extraordinary amounts of Mako (Lifestream) rather than being an ordinary human being. (see details below) Both the Jenova cells as well as the high levels of Lifestream in Cloud can easily affect his perception of the world. To extrapolate even further, consider the fact that Cloud has massive amounts of Lifestream within his body, and that the Lifestream is fundamental to the powers of a Cetra as demonstrated by the fact that Aerith has the ability to commune with the Lifestream as well as to summon spirits of the Lifestream to fight Jenova at the end of FFVII.
If Aerith can utilize the Lifestream for such purposes, then it should be taken for granted that she can also communicate with a living individual such as Cloud who has massive amounts of Lifestream in his body. In fact, the amount of Lifestream in Cloud is even greater than most SOLDIERS, due to his immersion in the Lifestream for over a week before resurfacing in Mideel. It is even possible that Cloud carries as much Lifestream in his body as a spirit of the Lifestream. Due to her Cetra heritage, Aerith can communicate with other spirits of the Lifestream both while she is alive (as shown by her communication with Ifalna), as well as after her death. Given that, it would also be possible for Aerith to communicate and interact with Cloud on a different level than other humans simply because of the immense amount of Lifestream in his body.
Since factors like this are often ignored, the main purpose of this essay will be to examine more closely how the Lifestream would affect Cloud and Aerith’s relationship after her death. This would have major influence on the question of whether Aerith’s death actually undermines the idea of Cloud’s continuing love for her. The Lifestream would also have an influence on the extent of their interaction and communication, which can easily be substantiated by the script and gamelore of the FFVII Compilation. Instead of judging Cloud and Aerith’s relationship in terms of how it would work here on Earth, this essay will evaluate their relationship in terms of what is possible in the fantasy world in which they live.
Does Cloud really need to move on, or is he still able to have a satisfying and meaningful relationship with Aerith according to the concepts and pretenses of the world in which they live? The gamelore and script of the FFVII Compilation may actually be able to tell us.
Sephiroth and Aerith in FFVII Gamelore
In the FFVII Compilation, neither Sephiroth or Aerith are human, which is exactly why they continue to exist after death. Although Sephiroth was originally human, he was genetically engineered into a hybrid version of an alien race which invaded Planet Gaia hundreds of years ago. This alien race is an evil force known as Jenova with incredible power, and it seeks to dominate all life forms on Planet Gaia. As a result of the Jenova cells inside Sephiroth, he has the power to be “reborn” (for lack of a better word). Even though he is dead, he is able to manifest physically so that he can battle against the human citizens of Gaia. He is also able to speak to humans, be seen by humans, and is able to control the actions and thoughts of some people infected with Jenova cells.
As stated before, Sephiroth is not human. He continues to exist and to be “reborn” even though he is dead because of the Jenova cells in him. Therefore, the principals of life and death are different for Sephiroth than for humans due to the alien cells in his body. A similar thing is true for Aerith, although her powers stem from the Lifestream rather than from Jenova cells. In fact, the novella Case of Lifestream: Black & White, by Kashushige Nojima, depicts Sephiroth as the driving force behind Lifestream Black (which is infected with Jenova cells), while Aerith is portrayed as supporting as well as influencing the actions of Lifestream White (the natural Lifestream).
Aerith is part Cetra, and it is her Cetra heritage that allows her to continue existing despite her death. The Lifestream is the fundamental basis of power for the Cetra, who are able to commune with the Lifestream and thereby summon the powers of the Planet. When Aerith summoned Holy, for example, she did so by communing with the Lifestream through prayer and summoning the power of Holy through the Planet. When Aerith called forth a healing rain to cure Geostigma in AC/ACC, the Lifestream was specially mixed with a combination of healing spells plus natural rain water to cure the disease. It is also commonly believed that a Cetra must become one with the Planet via the Lifestream after death. As a result, it becomes obvious that the powers of a Cetra are derived from the powers of Lifestream White.
Like Sephiroth, Aerith is able to manifest physically, as evidenced by the hand reach scene in AC/ACC. There was no indication that she used a spell to boost Cloud further skyward to fight Bahamut-Sin. Instead, she apparently thrust Cloud upwards physically in the same way the other members of Avalanche did, which would make it necessary for her to manifest physically. No member of Avalanche other than Cloud apparently saw Aerith during the hand reach scene. However, a white light was surrounding them at the time, which may have prevented anyone from seeing her except Cloud.
Therefore, the principals of life and death for humans do not apply to Aerith because of her Cetra heritage, just like they do not apply to Sephiroth because of the Jenova cells in him. As a result, the fact that both Sephiroth and Aerith are dead has a totally altered meaning in FFVII than here on Earth, and therefore needs to be viewed from a different perspective.

I love it!
Aerith knew that death didn’t mean to be annihilated. ~Maiden of the Planet ; A Novel
Even if they’re dead, their consciousness is still with us. As for Cloud…he sees Aerith several times throughout the film. It’s not that he sees her because he feels her presence. He sees her because her consciousness…lives on inside him. ~Nomura ; Distance Interview
Aerith Gainsborough - A girl with the blood of the Ancients flowing through her veins, who is engraved in Cloud’s heart for the rest of his life. ~Dirge of Cerberus ; a direct translation from the Game Booklet
I believe, for those who formerly traveled with her as comrades and for the viewers, each carries their own feelings and loves for Aerith. In this story, Cloud also carries his own undying feeling for Aerith even to this very day. ~Nomura ; Dengeki Playstation (2007)
Cloud is the woman’s friend, lover. ~Case of Lifestream: White ; A Novel
I will live on, for you and me. But I will never forget. Not you, not us. I swear. Our story will remain. For all eternity.
People need to stop forgetting that the FFVII Compilation doesn’t happen on Earth. It happens in a magical world where the principles of life and death are totally different than here on Earth. Aerith is dead, but her consciousness lives on;onside of Cloud - Nomura said so. That kine of thing wouldn’t happen here on Earth. Aerith doesn’t need to return to the Promised Land until she wants to - Nonima said so when writing CoL White:
The woman was an Ancient, which explained how she was able to maintain her individuality even within the Lifestream. If she so wished she could become part of the planet at any time, but the woman thought it too early for that just yet. ~Case of Lifestream White
People need to stop thinking that Cloud moves on with Tifa because Aerith is dead. Sorry, but that doesn’t necessarily apply to a magical world where Sephroth gets reborn and Cetra spirits guard the Black Matera for hundreds of years in the Temple of Ancients without returning to the Promised Land;
Nomura says that Aerith’s consciousness lives on inside of Cloud. That means their souls have merged; They will in fact be together forever, so there is no question that their love will live on.
