21 CAL PAL YEAAAASSS
In all honesty, you felt like a single mum.
As much as you loved Calum, and god did you love Calum, the fact he was barely ever around made raising your two children extremely difficult, particularly when they regularly asked where Daddy was.
“Hell be home soon.” Was your response, although even you were beginning to doubt that.
Because Calum’s life had always been fast paced. You knew that, you’d been a part of that. He’d whisked you off to more countries than you can count, to more cities than you remember. Calum moved quickly and followed his dream, and you weren’t ever going to ask him to stop.
Maybe just slow down, so you didn’t feel like you were in this marriage alone.
Because the gold band around your finger didn’t provide much solace when they both got chicken pox. It didn’t provide much encouragement when you doubted how well you were doing as a parent.
It didn’t provide much love, when that’s all you ever wanted from Calum.
When he finally came home, he can see it in your eyes.
He plays with the children, putting them both to bed with a grin as syou finish the washing up, his arms looping around your waist as he comes back in behind you. He doesn’t miss the way you stiffen slightly before allowing yourself to relax into his arms.
“I’m going to fix this.” He murmurs into the exposed skin on your shoulder. “I’m going to prove you aren’t alone, because I know that’s how you feel. I’m going to be home more, not just because I feel like I have to, but because I want to. I don’t want to miss Elliot and Lydia growing up. I don’t want to miss time with them, I don’t want them to forget who their Dad is. But I also I don’t want to lose you. I don’t want you to fall out of love with me, I don’t want you to think I’m not madly in love with you, that I’ve forgotten about us. I still love you just as much as I always have, if not more. And I’m going to fix this. So just don’t give up on me, please.”
