Indefinite Hiatus

Hi, all. I probably should have done this earlier, but I’m going to start a job and school in a couple of weeks, and Gladio’s the been the weakest muse I have out of my growing pile for a while now.

I’m not sure when I can be back on in any meaningful capacity, so I guess I’ll see you when I see you.

They’re hardly even to the market before Prompto’s belly is already rumbling eagerly, but the sheer sight of the grill has his mouth watering in torrents. Everything else around him evaporates as the skewers sizzle and smoke, the heavy scents wafting around him and entrancing his mind; until Gladio nudges him, bringing him back to reality.

The rainbow of liquids is hardly any better, and he trills excitedly, peering at them each very carefully before getting a mix, vibrating with sheer childish happiness. He looks up at Gladio, straw firmly between his lips as he sucks down the sugar-filled mixture of drinks, before watching his owner carry the sizzling skewers to a recently emptied table, following after him closely.

They hardly get seated when Prompto reaches out and grabs what he thinks is the largest skewer, wasting no time in ripping into the meat and devouring a thick chunk like it was nothing, spices and juice staining his mouth and running down his chin. His mind’s turned to autopilot, intent on only eating the food, tuning out anything Gladio says in favour of just filling himself.

It’s only when there’s a slight brush at the back of his neck that he stops, eyes narrowing before he lets out a yelp as his collar’s grabbed, some drunkard tugging at it and trying to run off with it. Dropping his food, Prompto whips around and scratches at the offender’s face with an irritant hiss, practically puffing up dangerously as the edges of his collar glow a faint red. 

“DON’T TOUCH ME.”

It’s an oddly entertaining situation. Watching Prompto’s expressions is like watching a kid at a candy store or Iris at a bakery with freshly stocked displays. An undercurrent of absurdity seems to run through each little action; Gladio’s protective instincts all too quickly overturn most of his anxiety from having born witness of near-arson at Prompto’s hands that afternoon. In fact, he counts it as a small blessings from the Gods when they get as far as their seats without any problem.

Gladio reaches for a skewer with drippings still running from the meat, but Prompto beats him to it, working with such savage efficiency that Gladio decides to tuck in silently before there’s nothing left but bamboo skewers. He builds it up in his mind as some sort of silly competition, tearing meat off and sending it down with gulps of water.

Prompto’s shriek has him choking on a sizeable chunk of garula, and Gladio looks around to determine that his pet has seized the attention of everyone in the vicinity. As soon as he gets that last bite in, an unexpected wave of relief runs through Gladio. At the very least, he no longer has to wonder just when the ticking time bomb that’s Prompto is going to go off for tonight. He stands up between them before Prompto has the chance to, giving the offender the meanest mug he has to offer as he sets a protective hand on Prompto’s shoulder. Prompto’s almost uncomfortably hot under his palm.

Normally, having such a gentle touch would only be perceived as condescending, but Prompto closes his eyes, leaning into Gladio’s fingers as they trail across his cheeks, only to stand up, heading for the door already. “Something dead. Anything, something with a lot of tasty meat.”

He could always smell the various foods wafting in from the lower parts of the city, among the rest of the colourful scents the city provided. But it was always the deep fried smells, the smell of something spicy slathered on grilled meat, that had his stomach aching.

“Really juicy meat, that’s what I want! C’mon, let’s go already!”

Gladio’s thankful for how easily Prompto’s mood is swayed, but perhaps just as thankful that he has agreeable taste. He’s off of the couch and out the door with Prompto soon enough, the bird’s warmth radiating off of him as the sun begins to set. They take the bullet train downtown with some difficulty-- Gladio’s explanation of the whole system goes largely unheard, he’s sure, with Prompto’s own curiosity prying his attention every which way.

They make it to the grill just as they put a fresh batch of skewers on. The place is easy for most to miss if they’re not specifically looking for it, though the smell of Galahadian spices and searing meat wafts through the streets so thoroughly that the grill asserts itself as a permanent fixture through aroma alone. It’s reasonably busy, the dining area filled with locals and refugees in various states of drunkenness and intense conversation. 

Gladio orders ten skewers of various meats, just to be safe, and some spiced vinegar to dip into before nudging Prompto to pick a drink from a veritable rainbow of choices ladled into transparent plastic jugs.

The weight of the collar sits just as heavily in his mind as it does around his neck, and his eyes are still burning, still dripping tears as he tries to suppress any sobs, feeling like he was being punished for simply existing. Humans were impossible to please, and he felt like he’d just lost some cosmic battle, having lost Gladio as his last ally with the collar being clicked into place.

But at least he wasn’t being sent back to a cage, or a cold cell with nothing but a bare cot to call a bed. He glanced back at the taller man, swallowing back his pride in favour of nodding, stomach growling to reaffirm his answer.

“..Yeah, I’m hungry. But I don’t wanna eat here. I want to eat somewhere on the outside.”

Gladio chances pulling Prompto into his arms, his instincts fighting against a more restrained approach as he gently wipes away Prompto’s tears. There’s an uncanny nostalgia in the act as he remembers himself consoling a younger Iris from things that were so important when she was a child. He hopes it’s the same sort of situation now-- an adjustment to the world that will seem laughable when it’s all over. Somehow, he doubts it.

He sits back, giving Prompto his space and some dignity in the situation, and stands.

“Well what do you wanna eat?” ‘What do you eat?’ For all the grief he’d been given about taking more thorough care of his pet, Prompto’d proven surprisingly resourceful so far.

Another sleepless night for Noctis, but this time it isn't because the tent is uncomfortable, or Prom snores too loudly. He can't sleep because-- /because/. Noctis slips out of the tent, and sits by the abandoned camp chairs. He tips his head back, and watches the stars.

Sometimes Gladio doesn’t catch it. Sure, he catches the bags under Noct’s eyes in the morning or the way he tucks himself against the edge of the Regalia’s back seat to nap as soon as the engine starts, but the fact of the matter is that each day wears on him more than he’s used to. Sometimes, as soon as Gladio’s out for the night, he’s out stone cold.

It’s really luck that has him up when the sheets rustle, and it redeems Gladio’s esteem a bit to be awake to see that familiar shadow rustle out the tent. It’s not long before he follows, moving as lightly as he can before settling down alongside him.

He lets some time pass in blessed silence before saying anything.
