Forgot to post on here but I finished the game Alisa, it's a survival horror game and I'm glad I got to give it a try. The story is short and sweet with notes throughout the game to give added depth.

tbh im not entirely immune to a villain with a tragic backstory but i do think villain origins are a lot more interesting when the focus is less "here is the original sin, the first big bad thing that happened to them that made them who they are" and more "here is the first time a person who maybe otherwise felt powerless in their life realized that they could hurt someone and get away with it"

you can get a lot more mileage out of analyzing a truly abhorrent character through the lens of like. what sort of conditions would allow or even incentivize this kind of cruelty? what kind of person benefits from those conditions and how? over the more typical who hurt them type analysis. imo.

what i don't understand about henry's story arc for season 5:

why did they make him terrified of the cave? 

they reveal in the show that the reason he was so scared of going in the cave, of remembering the boy he used to be, was because the mind flayer ‘didn’t want him to remember’. it thought that if he remembered his innocence, and how hopeful he was of the world, he would realise that the mind flayer played a key role in stripping away that innocence. he would realise that the ultimate means to his complete ostracisation from society was caused by the mind flayer (the darkness and powers instilled in henry both corrupted his worldview and resulted in his experimentation on by brenner). thus, remembering what happened in the cave, he would naturally turn against the mind flayer. 

this felt like it was definitely leading up to some sort of a redemption arc for henry. the key pawns he needed to fulfil the mind flayer’s plan were hiding themselves away in the cave, giving him clear motivation to get into the cave at some point. simultaneously, going into the cave would imply that henry would realise how misaligned the mind flayer’s goals were with his and how the entity played a significant part in his loneliness. this clearly sets up the plotline for henry to go into the cave in order to capture the children before remembering the point that he became flayed. 

and this is exactly what happens. 

the only thing is, henry doesn’t turn against the mind flayer. he deems himself past the point of redemption, the mind flayer’s influence convincing him that it is all he has left, and without it he is nothing. 

quickly, how do we know that it was the mind flayer convincing henry of this, and not something henry said of his own accord? well, just before henry cements his position as ‘symbiotic’ (he believes) with the mind flayer, there is a brief moment of hesitation after will’s offer. during this hesitation, the ‘heart’ of the pain tree is seen to increase in palpitation rate, signifying an increase in particles being pumped into henry’s body. the mind flayer needed to boost its presence in his body in order to combat the thoughts of rebellion that were being planted into henry’s mind. thus, it is not truly henry that chooses to side with the mind flayer; the tear that rolls down his cheek as he declares his allegiance is signifying of how he doesn’t truly want to follow through with the mind flayer’s agenda but is being made to believe that that is his only option left. 

back on topic. 

if the mind flayer was able to keep henry in its grasp even after he remembered what happened in the cave, why did it bother keeping henry out? i understand at first it possibly didn’t want to take the risk, but henry was already so broken that he couldn’t have put up much of a fight, especially before will arrived. when all the mind flayer needed was holly, why just send henry in then, or when he was chasing max? why wait until going into the cave was the only option left if it could have controlled henry the whole time and captured holly or max ages ago?

why would you set up a clear path for henry to resist the mind flayer at last, by deeming the significance of the cave’s memory to henry enough to cause the mind flayer to come up with a whole new plan, only to have the mind flayer retain control over him anyway when he does remember? 

so what was the ultimate goal in making henry terrified of the cave? probably an attempt to reveal his backstory while also providing a loophole to keep max alive, and also to add holly as a significant character in season 5 by having her interact with max to conspire against henry. still, i feel like the significance of the cave could have actually been upheld. i digress the genius of the cave in allowing max's character to survive, but i'll state again that henry should have been able to just go into the cave at any time if we're following the logic of what happens in the finale. *i will note that i do like how it shows henry's desperation when he finally does go into the cave after his second plan begins to falter, but this effect is somewhat lessened after watching the series again and thinking about how he could have gone in the whole time if the mind flayer was just gonna win anyway.

i can’t believe i’m still finding plot deficiencies seven months after the finale. rip henry creel you deserved better. 

(fyi my ideal ending entails henry and will fighting back against the mind flayer and both dying along with it)

i thought of this because i was watching the scene in s5e4 when he's chasing max and then he got all scared and i was like awwwww... wait. why did they make him so scared

it’s like… if going into the cave weakens henry’s resolve to the point of him giving into the mindflayer fully and therefore merging consciousnesses (?) with it, why does the mf bother keeping him out in the first place? why not merge together from the start?

the cave served zero plot purpose to the point where him choosing the mindflayer’s side didn’t feel like a subversion of our expectations for a redemption arc, but rather a lazy means of finishing a story arc that doesn’t add anything besides a little bit of background lore for henry and plot armor for max and the kids. the cave and camazotz as a whole was POINTLESS in the grand scheme of things. it makes henry’s storyline boring, makes him seek pathetic and useless as a villain, and makes the mindflayer look like a caricature of the powerful antagonist its supposed to be.

like i get what they were trying to do but the execution, like with everything else in season 5, fell completely flat
