I’m going to be honest, Shea x Bea isn’t really my cup of tea, but I’d take it over Shea x Victor any day.

Victor does NOT read as someone who’d be in a relationship to be honest. They read to me like someone who cannot fathom ever being alone a day in their life, and so they force someone else into a partnership with them just so they never have to come to terms with the fact that being your own fucking person without someone constantly lifting you up is Actually The Healthy Way To Go About Things.

They want to be loved without putting in any of the work, so they force a romantic relationship in order to get that “love” while thinking they are owed it. It’s like trying to force a puzzle piece into a place it doesn’t fit, except I legitimately do not think that there is a “correct” puzzle piece for Victor.

OH MY GOD A CRIT BLOG. FINALLY. HI. ARE WE GOING TO TALK ABOUT HOW BEA IS LITERALLY A BETTER FRIEND THAN VICTOR IS. BECAUSE BEA ACTUALLY TRUSTS SHEA TO DO THINGS. victor is such a fucking asshole theyre constantly like "ohhhh this art isnt good but shea did their best... shea isnt smart but theyre trying..." ITS SO BACKHANDED. and then instead of letting shea do anything on their own they yell at the others for not helping them!!!! but ohhhh BEA is somehow in the wrong for not wiping shea's ass or whatever fucking thing jay decides shea is too fucking stupid to do. it actually pisses me off

I'm going to try to keep a level head about this, because despite my growing disdain for this comic I do NOT want Jay to receive any harassment (nor do I ever want them to see this blog to be quite clear), but the fact that we see everything from Victor's perspective makes me fucking despise them as a character.

NOTHING Victor has to say is ever nice. They are CONSTANTLY putting down the others around them, even if it's """intended""" to be a compliment. Ester is always "too loud", Rooney is always "too controlling", Bea is always "so full of it". Even Shea, who Jay LIKES, can't escape this??? They're always portrayed as being too pure and innocent to do anything right, Victor just ALWAYS has to swoop in to "protect" them. The infantilization of Shea is insane and I am SICK OF IT.

Like, Bea can be a bit rough around the edges, but at least it actually seems like they care???? And not that backwards "caring" that Victor does where they just REFUSE to let Shea be their own person without Victor's influence, because Bea actually gives Shea space to BREATHE. They don't need to be around Shea 24/7 to know that the two of them are friends, because they're not obsessed with Shea like Victor is. I know we're all support to hate Bea and how "they're literally the worst" but if I had to choose between being friends with someone who can be an asshole sometimes but at the end of the day still cares about me, or being friends with someone who tries to control and correct literally every fucking thing I do, I'd choose Bea in a HEARTBEAT.

ive always thought it was messed up how posey is like... always forgotten? like in group shots where they're supposed to be there, they aren't. group icons with the "while group" forget posey. in a better comic id think that sort of thing was intentional but i genuinely think jay is just incompetent. its not like the cast is super big i genuinely dont know how you could forget a whole ass character

Thank you for pointing this out, anon! Though Bea is (very obviously) my favorite, it's important to not forget about Posey as well. For, well, obvious reasons.

In a better story, Posey being "forgotten" could be used to show how Victor isn't exactly innocent in all of this. It could be used to show how hyper-focused they've become regarding the opinions of others, to the detriment of those around them. How, by willfully choosing to only acknowledge the existences of Shea, Rooney, Ester and Bea, good or bad, they are actually hurting Posey an incredible amount.

Though I have my own theories about why this is, Jay just being incompetent isn't out of the realm of possibility. I just wonder why they even bothered including them at all. I mean, hell, it's a cast of six characters. If you just don't care for one to the point where you can't remember them, to the point of doing everything except actively writing them out of the story, then why even include them at all??? I get falling out of love with characters, so why can't Jay just-- rework Posey, or write them out of the story entirely?

I think this speaks a lot towards Jay's inability to let go of things, as we've seen before with the September Anon Incident. Instead of making a change that would arguably improve their story, they choose to leave things the same out of some stubborn refusal to change, which ends up actively working against them.

Something that will always irk me, from a meta perspective, is how Jay puts considerably less care into drawing any character other than Vic and Shea. Rooney is the most egregious example of this. She looks as if Jay didn’t bother to clean up her sketch and simply decided to color the first thing they drew. Compared to Shea, who has much more detail, Rooney looks downright depressing. I think this is very immature for a comic that claims to cover serious topics— you are essentially broadcasting to the audience who you are and are not supposed to root for. This makes the whole premise about covering toxic friendships meaningless, because in reality there are no true “good guys” and “bad guys”. If you immediately tell the audience who is the “villain” in this story, then you have failed at properly handling a complicated topic.

On a side note, I don’t think I need to explain why the whole “this character is ugly so you know you’re not supposed to like them” trope is bad, but clearly I seem to have overestimated Jay’s awareness.

Jay's hatred for any character that isn't Shea concerns me from a writing perspective. You'd think, as someone making a comic about friendship, that you would put more thought into characterizing your characters as individuals with multiple dimensions to them, instead of one-note caricatures that the audience is explicitly told to hate. Many anthries have flaws, but that does not make them completely irredeemable. However, this nuance seems to be completely absent within the lore of Clover Consistency.
