Now I realize that happiness was never the goal. It was to learn how to live again. I’m watching the sun rising listening to the coyotes screaming and I found the owl that was hooing in the distance. I’m sitting here amazed at it. There’s a pang of heartache in my chest. I only ever see owls sitting alone at dawn, just like me I guess. A tear’s on my cheek, it’s breathtaking. Kind of like watching the lightning from my porch last night. I laid awake in bed for hours just to show gratitude for the rain. Now I’m writing sitting on a wet bench with this owl right next to me. It’s like I finally am living and speaking the language of the earth. And I do feel alive again, feeling sadness and joy, aloneness and amazement all at once.
