Ideas for Janusās room:
When Thomas or other Sides first arrive, they see it as brightly lit, idyllic and inviting, kind of like Pattonās room without all the nostalgiaā¦ but this is an illusion. There are subtle discrepancies youāll notice over time, like the furniture and decorations randomly changing form or layout in the background, as if the room canāt get its story straight. Acts of deceit strengthen the facade. The more honesty is demonstrated inside the room (by Janus or anyone else), the more it fades away to reveal the dark, gothic real aesthetic underneath. Only Janus can see its true nature all the time. He canāt see or control the illusion even if he tries, though he knows it exists. The room itself is ālyingā on its own accord.
Since Janus values success, wealth and self-indulgence, his room is luxurious and opulent in the style of a Victorian mansion (it was the best of times, it was the worst of timesā¦). Lots of gold accents. A chandelier. Bookshelves full of philosophical texts and classic literature. Slightly imperfect forgeries of famous paintings.
The illusion has softer, more rounded shapes, while the shadowy reality is very sharp and angular. Both have the same emphasis on comfort and grandeur. But the former is too good to be true, immaculate like a show home. The latter has much more snake imagery and is clearly lived-in, e.g. more personal items, a bit of mess, there might be a wine glass or three left out.
In any guise, the room has a strong theme of duality throughout. Matching or mismatched sets of items, symmetrical decor, mirrors with inaccurate reflections.
The longer the other Sides stay there, the more they lose touch with reality and start working to unintentionally mislead Thomas and help him lie to himself. Virgil states cognitive distortions as facts; Logan speaks in logical fallacies; and Patton and Romanās emotions and idealism are heightened to blind them to the objective truth, Patton wanting to see the best in everything so Thomas can be happy; and Roman wanting to believe satisfying narratives that appeal to his hero complex. They also become more self-absorbed, distrustful and prone to confirmation bias. All that matters is what they want to believe. For example, Logan wants to believe that heās an infallible paragon of rationality, so the room at once amplifies that conviction and makes it untrue. This would force Janus to be the voice of reason and sincerity, which is the last thing he wants.
Janus keeps a plushie of Thomas displayed on a table, because he openly cares for Thomas above all and takes pride in his purpose. The othersā plushies are hidden under the table or in a corner or something. Because they mean nothing to him. Whatsoever.
