I don’t think it’s dumb at all. Nitrile gloves are a standard method to clean and isolate the experiments and equipment from human contamination or other common sources. It’s a practice held widely across multiple disciplines from health to material sciences. Ultraclean environments use nitrile gloves as part of the best known methods to maintaining clean, sterile environments. Even in leading edge semiconductor manufacturing where I work nitrile gloves are considered the best option for cleanliness.

Identifying and understanding main contributions to issues in methodology should be celebrated and appreciated. Calling people stupid or dumb for not realizing it can be an issue is unproductive. Maybe it’s specific types or producers of nitrile gloves? There are different specs and formulations. What if one style is fine but another isn’t? There are hundreds of places to buy gloves. Maybe the lab switched from one source to another, which increased or decreased the contamination. Again, realizing the gloves can contribute to skewed data is a great thing! Now labs can look into correcting for that moving forward.

Science and the scientific methods used for experiments are constantly evolving and self correcting. Catching this should be praised, not ridiculed.
