Introduction!

Hi all! Our shelter isn’t very established yet and we’re new to this side of tumblr, but we’ve been at clown husbandry for a while and feel prepared to take on the challenge of running our own rehabilitation center! We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure our shelter is suitable for dozens of different breeds, has lots of open space for the clowns to run around in, has proper enrichment and food, etc.

I’m mod Dorian. I’ve been a hobbyist for almost my whole life - my family used to foster shelter clowns, and even adopted some - but began taking clown husbandry more seriously about five years ago. I specialize in miniature porcelain scare clowns, but have taken a recent interest in the rescue of meat clowns, and in addition to my lovely miniatures I’m currently caring for some meat clowns at the shelter!

I don’t think I’ll ever be a total expert, but I know a lot and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have. My coworker (and co-owner!) will introduce themself below!

Hey! It's your pal mod Scary. We've worked hard for a long time to raise and rehome tons of clowns! I take in almost any kind of clown, but scare clowns have always been a personal interest of mine <3 I too am a bit scary to some people, so I really just want the best for every single clown! I love clowns I love to look at clowns and to hold them in my hands.

I was never really into clown husbandry until I met my first scare clown, but I instantly knew I had to keep and hold every clown I could get my little clown holding hands on!

Can I purchase a clown breed off of Amazon, or do they have unethical breeders?

Never buy a clown off of Amazon. They're unethical breeders, and they generally aren't healthy clowns that come from them.

Hello fellow clown owners!!

I've been caring for a scare clown for 5 years now. It hasn't gotten sick and, forgive me; I have not done any prior research before purchasing this clown, but I've had no complications until now. I impulse bought it due to the amount of people around me getting clowns and I wanted to feel included while also having a new life long friend.

I'm aware that wasn't a good idea and I gave my scare clown, "Cheese Sandwich", a sufficient and consitent feeding schedule. If it matters; I feed him freshly grown peanuts and store bought cotten candy. I believe the brand was called "Goofin' Hop".

Cheese Sandwich has been growing purple spots all over his body when he use to be a vibrant yellow and black colour. The yellow has now faded and Ive searched for some solutions, but it seems I can't find any info on this. The closest I've found was "Zebra Stripes Disease" but instead of polka dots they were purple stripes and the other conditions were the same. Please if you know anything about what I can do to save Cheese Sandwich it'd be greatly appreciated. If anyone has questions please ask away.

Hello!!

First off, has Cheese Sandwich exhibited any strange changes in behavior? If so, and he’s been experiencing negative behavior changes, you should take him to your local clown clinic right away. Even though I’ve got a theory as to what might be up otherwise, you should take him to the clinic for a check up just in case if you can!!! It’s very important.

If Cheese Sandwich has been acting normally, maybe even a little happier than usual, it may just be that putting him on a consistent feeding schedule caused his true, natural colors to come out. When clowns are not in their healthiest state their colors can change- whether that be becoming muted or changing altogether depends on the condition, but clowns that hadn’t received proper care throughout their lives were shown to exhibit their true colors once fed and cleaned and cared for.

Goofin’ Hop is a pretty high quality cotton candy brand from what I’ve found as well, I’ve given it to my own clown on occasion!!

Again, there could be factors I am unaware of that could insinuate something else, so if you can it’d be a good idea to get him to a clinic for even a little check up! Please keep me updated when you get to the bottom of this, I hope Cheese Sandwich turns out alright! :))

Ok I feel like it so some cute clown behaviors!

They’re generally pretty sensitive to emotions so if your sad they might preform little tricks for you!

Sometimes clowns paint the faces of their owners to “add them to their troupe”, don’t get angry because this shows that they love and trust you, and maybe consider wearing a minimized version sometimes to show you want to be part of their group!

Small scare clowns will jump out of random places and “scare” you, basically yelling boo or squeaking loudly if they’re not prone to talking. Acting scared and complementing their scaring skills makes them extremely happy!

Some clowns love stuffed animals/other props, and will carry them around like a comfort item. If they entrust you to care for their item while they do things that require being away from it PROTECT IT. This shows a lot of trust, so cherish it!

Honking! It’s typically a joyful thing and various trills, honks, squeaks, and chirps show a happy clown. Never punish them just for making noise, clowns are intelligent and can understand when it’s a inappropriate time if it’s explained to them.

Clowns and Holiday Treats

Easter is coming up for many who celebrate, and it’s worth bringing up the conversation that often comes up around Halloween and Christmas: small candy.

Holiday candy - in the case of Easter, mini eggs, peeps, scavenger hunts for little chocolates - can make a wonderful treat for your clown, and many of the festivities are good temporary enrichment. However, if you primarily own large or medium breeds, do NOT overfeed treats your clown. It’s not a good solution to bulk buy cheap candy after a holiday, as clowns often need much bigger meals and a more varied diet.

However, for miniature clown owners, this is actually a great time to take advantage of the sales! Particularly for mini spook clowns (not quite the same as scare clowns, but of the same genus), small candy is a good replacement for the tubs of candyfloss and big marshmallows large clowns often eat. However, meat is still a diet requirement for the majority of clowns, no matter their size.

My mini porcelains are over half scare clown and eat small candy as a significant part of their diet, but they’re a bit bigger than an average mini and because of their breed do still need to eat a fairly hefty amount of meat and some bigger candies.

Apologies if this is poorly worded, I’m a bit tired lately caring for a new addition to the shelter and haven’t been my most articulate self. I’ve seen posts like this before but thought it might be helpful to share my experience with minis, as they frequently differ from large breeds of clown.

I spent All. Freaking. Day. Cleaning up peanut shells and sanitizing everything for a school field trip (one of the kids had a peanut allergy) and I was super frustrated and tired by the time I was done but man, when those kiddos come into the big tent and see all my rescues, the way those faces light up... it's worth it.

Question

Looking into clowns but I have some questions

What's the best clown for someone that makes music

I also have 5 pets; 2 dogs, 2 cats, and a rock, which clowns are best for those pets

Are there any clowns that can/can't handle punk rock/pop punk music

I would strongly suggest a rodeo clown! They make great pets for beginners - my childhood clown was actually a rodeo. They get along great with other pets in the household, but may exhibit herding behaviour (they were bred to protect their owners and herd livestock), and you should be able to provide a rodeo with lots of space and enrichment (here’s a source on rodeo clown enrichment items!). They can be rowdy, which is why they’re good if you’re making punk music as they’ll probably enjoy listening to it!

I would only suggest adopting a clown if you have the space, though. Small clowns, like porcelain clowns (even if they’re not bad beginner pets), don’t fare well with big animals that could knock them around or even break them! It’s easy for them to feel intimidated or cornered, and a stressed clown is not a clown you want to have, for many reasons. Definitely do not get a mime if your house is loud and busy, as they react negatively to loud environments.
