What I really hate about younger people in fandom asking older fangirls why they’re “still” in fandom is that it’s the outcome of a misogynistic lack of representation for older women to be seen as people who have fun and fuck off.We never ask dude fans the same question. We have all kinds of cultural narratives of dude’s fucking off, playing videogames well into their 40s. And even when these narratives aren’t 100% sympathetic (ie: the perpetual manchild), there’s always this sort of exasperation around it like, what can you do? Boys will be boys. But when women age into fandom, there’s a whole lotta confusion around her very existence. When a younger fan wants to know why I’m here, in this space, they seem genuinely confused and uncomfortable. Because what are our archetypes for older woman: wife, mother, cougar even. Not womanchild. Not fuckoff. Not fangirl. Men are allowed seemingly childish pursuits but women better get in the kitchen and start scrapbooking.

To Whom It May Concern

It has come to my attention that some of you have been enjoying media that the OAF (Organization Against Fun) has deemed Problematic™.

This is unacceptable.

The frankly appalling behavior in question is exemplified by, but not limited to, engaging with themes not suitable for five year olds, speaking about or writing complex characters without constantly emphasizing how evil they are, and creating fanworks that do not appeal to me personally without asking for my permission or begging for my forgiveness.

Since you people do not possess my superior intellect, you have thus misinterpreted the phrase "thinking critically" to mean "analyzing and interpreting a work" instead of the correct definition "nitpicking perceived flaws". Fear not, you will be re-educated.

Aditionally, certain individuals, who shall remain unnamed, have displayed shocking amounts of empathy towards morally grey characters, or worse, developed a fondness for villainous characters who were written to be charming and dramatic. When confronted with my lecture about how villains are evil, these individuals responded with "and that's very sexy of them."

The OAF cannot let this stand.

Instead of shipping Woke™ ships with a far less interesting dynamic, there have been various attempts to normalize, romanticize, fetishize, realize and caramelize illegal ships, which should be punishable by death as it is tantamount to a war crime.

Sadly, the AO3 (Archive of Our Own) responded to my reasonable demands for censorship by telling me to "fuck off or learn to use the tagging system for its intended purpose."

I must ask all who are currently having fun in their fandoms to cease and desist.

Here we have the page. There was much debate over it cause Dini has never been so clear and his Joker usually is more subtle. This should have had more development but what we’re seeing is Dini’s sworn declaration that this version isn’t abusive.

this is a bit too heavy-handed and OOC for me, but I appreciate Dini's effort to go against the intense backlash of recent years of people trying to simplify and diminish this relationship. Honestly, at this stage, it needs to be this heavy-handed - all the subtlety and dynamics of this pairing has been all but scrubbed away on a tide of populist pandering. It's good to be reminded we were never just seeing things - it's always been everyone else determined not to see it all.

I wanted to make it clear that she would stand up for herself and she would give it back to him and they really are in a relationship where the two kind of spar and fight and also kid and express some tenderness for each other. I didn’t want her to be just what she appears to be from Batman’s perspective which is the henchman saying ‘Yes Mr J’ and following along blindly as part of the gag. It makes them seem as if they’re in a bit more of a real relationship. One of my favourite things we came up with is when they’re just settling down for the night and Joker just says whats in his heart to Harley and actually expresses emotion towards her. But at the same time he’s talking about how he feels and about his perceptions, not really talking about what she wants. And he looks over and shes fast asleep. Shes always wanted to hear him stay stuff like that. But what does he do? He just tucks her into bed. And if anything he just goes ‘Well I was going to tell her some important things but she fell asleep… So the jokes on me’

Problematic ships: are we having a semantics issue here?

More and more I’m beginning to think that a lot of wank about problematic “ships” comes from the fact that we’re collapsing an entire spectrum of how people approach fandom pairings into a single word. (To keep the language simpler here I’ve only talked about “pairings”, but this also applies to poly ships.)

At one extreme, I’m personally reluctant to use the word “shipping” at all about pairings I read and write, because I don’t think “shipping” really describes how I approach fandom. I don’t have strong feelings about who characters should be paired with. When I read or write a pairing it’s because that pairing has a dynamic I’m interested in, not because I think it would be good for the characters.

At the other end of the spectrum, I know people for whom “shipping” really is believing that two characters should be together, because they have such a great relationship dynamic in canon. Who believe that being together would be better for both characters.

When people say that nobody should ever “ship” or create fanworks about a pairing because they have an unhealthy relationship in canon, those people seem to be assuming that literally everyone who creates fanworks about a pairing “ships” them in that second sense. That the only reason to create fanworks about a pairing is because you believe the characters have a great relationship dynamic in canon, and would be better off together.

Fandom is about so, so much more than that.

Sometimes we want to read or write about unhealthy relationships. Sometimes we want to explore what circumstances might make a relationship healthier, or unhealthier, than what’s depicted in canon.

We “ship” characters with unhealthy canon dynamics because we believe these are interesting and important stories to tell.

Not all relationships are healthy. It’s absurd to insist that we should only ever tell stories about completely healthy relationships.

This person clearly understands the word “ship” to entail some sort of moral endorsement – they’ve said so outright!

But that isn’t the only kind of “shipping”, and that kind of “shipping” certainly isn’t the only reason people create or enjoy fanworks about a pairing.
