We’ve heard from a bunch of you that Safe Mode was filtering posts from the LGBTQ+ community even though they were completely innocuous and totally safe-for-work. Please know that was never our intention, and we appreciate you letting us know so quickly—and forcefully! We’re deeply sorry. Tumblr will always be a place where everyone is welcome and protected, so we want to explain what happened.
The major issue was some Tumblrs had marked themselves as Adult/NSFW (now Explicit) as a courtesy to their fellow users, and their perfectly safe posts were getting marked sensitive unintentionally. That should never have happened. We’re sorry.
We’re making some changes that should improve things:
Changes to self-marked blogs
What was happening: Because we consider Explicit blogs to be predominantly sensitive content, we were automatically marking all their posts as sensitive. That was too broad.
What we fixed: Now each post is classified individually. As they should be.
Changes to reblog chains
What was happening: If an Explicit Tumblr reblogged a safe post, we were marking that reblog as sensitive. This was even happening to text posts. Which is silly.
What we fixed: We changed the logic so that if the OP is safe, all its reblogs will also be safe.
Changes to photosets
What’s (still) happening: When you make a photo post, a computer algorithm classifies the image as safe or sensitive. It’s a machine so it’s not perfect. And the chances go up with photosets because there are multiple images. But out of an abundance of caution we keep posts marked sensitive until the OP requests a human review (by tapping the appeal button on their posts).
What we’re working on: We plan to have photosets analyzed as a whole group, rather than as individual images. That should reduce the number of mistakes the machine makes.
Safe Mode is supposed to make sure people aren’t surprised by things may not want to see—specifically, nudity. It might take some time to get it perfect, but we’re committed to getting there with your help. Our algorithms will keep getting smarter as you give feedback on misclassified posts, and as you share your concerns and suggestions.

@staff here’s some suggestions: Make it so you don’t censor the dashes of minors- it isn’t cute and it isn’t helping anyone. I made my dash the way it is because I’m certain no blogs I follow are nsfw, I shouldn’t have to deal with this for three years because you think you understand what’s good for me or not. Minors should get a say in what we see and how our dash is made up and what we search - a lot of posts and stuff is how the minors on this site express ourselves. We should get a say in how that is done without worrying about being censored (for like cursing and stuff, not for ya know posting nsfw pictures because that’s illegal and should be dealt with appropriately) or not seeing new ideas or stuff because they were censored. Especially since, as you said, the almighty filtering machine doesn’t work 100% and we still end up seeing nsfw posts on our dashes. Also get rid of the machine and have real people look at posts, as great as technology is only humans can detect nuances in photographs and posts and understand context and such - no machine can do that yet.

You can’t put all us in the same group. You know what else is illegal? Marijuana, in most states. And so was homosexual marriage for a long while… until only recently. Though the government has yet to recognize it, laws are constantly changing as society’s views and opinions change. And I’m sure when you were underage like us you too frequently broke a few laws every now and then.
Also what nationality are you from? America? Me too (unfortunately). Because in America the minimum age of consent is 18… (but of course teens break this law all the time). So no, we aren’t fucking “minors” in the sense of sexual understanding and activities. And no, this shit isn’t illegal…at least not in like 75% of other countries in the world. Because sexual exposure is becoming much more common in adolescents, and in America there actually IS NO SET LAW in the age of exposure to sexual content- only a law in the age that we can ENGAGE in sexual activity. While there IS a general regulation to children viewing sexual content, this law only STRICTLY applies to children at or under 13, and once the kids hit 15 or 16, that’s when the rules start to get blurry and the expectations can vary. Because by then we’ve seen it all so there’s no point in enforcing these rules to protect us, really. But where DOES this concept become illegal? Child pornography, which indeed is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE and should be banned on here at all costs.
So yeah, no. In most cases its perfectly reasonable for older adolescents to view sexual imagery and read erotica- so long as it’s mostly safe and consensual and they don’t attempt to engage in these elements on their own.
The only reason the staff enforced this rule is most likely because the US government doesn’t want us teens getting horny at school or in public… (a taboo concern really) but that’s a responsibility that Tumblr as a WORLDWIDE website accessible to everyone IS NOT required to hold… and therefore SHOULD NOT force us teens to abide by. We came to Tumblr for a reason… because we wanted to escape the strict expectations upheld to us by society…and even if we are not 18 or over, we SHOULD be given the right to choose whether or not to filter NSFW content…. and be expected to use this privilege responsibly as users.
In certain states in the United States the age of consent is 16 (other states have lower which is fucked honestly) which is 2 years less than the age you are capable of experiencing sexual media so if we’re going by tumblr’s standards you could be having sex at 16/17 and still be restricted from viewing others doing the same thing which is odd to say the least

1 - Marijuana - has no purpose being illegal because of its uses medicinally and also there’s no harm and a variety of benefits would arise from it being legal. There’s no harm even in recreational use as long as a person treats it like alcohol and doesn’t drive or try to do something that could be potentially life threatening (like working heavy machinery) because of the loss of motor control and reflex time.
2 - Homosexuality was perpetuated as a crime because people are assholes. I’m pan.
3 - A minor, or in this case, anyone under the age of 25* or around then, doesn’t have the mental capacity to fully understand the type and finality of the consent they are giving when attempting to expose themselves in sexually based situations. This is literally science and if you want to look up the development of the brain and want to understand how incapable children are at recognizing the severity or finality of a situation, I reccomend you look at some cases where children might’ve been accused of homicide or some other form of murder (being a “normal” person without a personality disorder) and look at the things they were preoccupied with at the time.

Also, I was merely stating the political views on the subject matter. And the problem with the children in all these issues you’ve brought up is not that they’re incapable of understanding consent. The only reason that children can’t understand these concepts is because they were exposed to them in ALL THE WRONG WAYS and they ALSO did not receive any further education on them. And because we don’t educate them and instead treat sex as a taboo subject, these kids get the wrong idea about sex and shit like this happens. That boy you mentioned? That’s not sex. Its abuse. There’s a clear difference. Same with child pornography. Just like the fact that pedophilia isn’t a sexuality, child pornography is not real porn, and sexual abuse is not real sex.
That boy grew up like that because he was not only ABUSED sexually, but he never got the care and attention needed to understand what REAL sex is and what distinguishes it from abuse. Instead of therapists and other essentials to help him up, he had only shit parents and drugs to keep him company. True, 14 is FAR too young for people to have sex..no question there.Of course complications arise when you allow children to have sex at that age, but we can’t JUST use Mexico as an example! There’s also Sweden and Denmark, (the happiest countries in the world) where the minimum age of consent is 15. Honestly I don’t feel like talking about this anymore. It has nothing to do with my argument overall and at this point my only reason to continue is because you say I don’t have the capability to understand this topic- which isn’t true.
Let me just get to the meat here: There is a lot Tumblr could’ve done- and they made a mistake with this update- a mistake I hope will be fixed. I just want people to understand that keeping teens under wraps like this is not the ultimate solution in the end and that there are better methods like sexual education and laws directed at ADULTS who perpetrate these crimes rather than the children who fall victim to them. I guess I speak at bias, which is typical- though I try not to. I could spend years arguing with you over this, but it would be pointless. This topic is complex, and I regret bringing it up in the first place… I guess I’m just frustrated that Tumblr included me in their whole shitshow here. I’m tired of people generalizing and labeling me as immature and want them to realize that age means nothing when it comes to preventing bad things from happening. It all depends on how they were raised. I just don’t think this is the way to go. -_-

We’ve heard from a bunch of you that Safe Mode was filtering posts from the LGBTQ+ community even though they were completely innocuous and totally safe-for-work. Please know that was never our intention, and we appreciate you letting us know so quickly—and forcefully! We’re deeply sorry. Tumblr will always be a place where everyone is welcome and protected, so we want to explain what happened.
The major issue was some Tumblrs had marked themselves as Adult/NSFW (now Explicit) as a courtesy to their fellow users, and their perfectly safe posts were getting marked sensitive unintentionally. That should never have happened. We’re sorry.
We’re making some changes that should improve things:
Changes to self-marked blogs
What was happening: Because we consider Explicit blogs to be predominantly sensitive content, we were automatically marking all their posts as sensitive. That was too broad.
What we fixed: Now each post is classified individually. As they should be.
Changes to reblog chains
What was happening: If an Explicit Tumblr reblogged a safe post, we were marking that reblog as sensitive. This was even happening to text posts. Which is silly.
What we fixed: We changed the logic so that if the OP is safe, all its reblogs will also be safe.
Changes to photosets
What’s (still) happening: When you make a photo post, a computer algorithm classifies the image as safe or sensitive. It’s a machine so it’s not perfect. And the chances go up with photosets because there are multiple images. But out of an abundance of caution we keep posts marked sensitive until the OP requests a human review (by tapping the appeal button on their posts).
What we’re working on: We plan to have photosets analyzed as a whole group, rather than as individual images. That should reduce the number of mistakes the machine makes.
Safe Mode is supposed to make sure people aren’t surprised by things may not want to see—specifically, nudity. It might take some time to get it perfect, but we’re committed to getting there with your help. Our algorithms will keep getting smarter as you give feedback on misclassified posts, and as you share your concerns and suggestions.

@staff here’s some suggestions: Make it so you don’t censor the dashes of minors- it isn’t cute and it isn’t helping anyone. I made my dash the way it is because I’m certain no blogs I follow are nsfw, I shouldn’t have to deal with this for three years because you think you understand what’s good for me or not. Minors should get a say in what we see and how our dash is made up and what we search - a lot of posts and stuff is how the minors on this site express ourselves. We should get a say in how that is done without worrying about being censored (for like cursing and stuff, not for ya know posting nsfw pictures because that’s illegal and should be dealt with appropriately) or not seeing new ideas or stuff because they were censored. Especially since, as you said, the almighty filtering machine doesn’t work 100% and we still end up seeing nsfw posts on our dashes. Also get rid of the machine and have real people look at posts, as great as technology is only humans can detect nuances in photographs and posts and understand context and such - no machine can do that yet.
no you should censor minor dashes. minors are still that-MINORS. and frankly this site is barely suitable for them anyway. it is your responsibility as the site owners to protect them in any way necessary. please censor the dashes of minors.
You can’t put all us in the same group. There are those who are too young like 12 and 13 who don’t know much better and then you have 16, 17, heck 18 years old who grown up and loss innocence just from being at school. You don’t know everyone’s taste. So don’t group them together assuming they are all innocent babies. Thank you.

You know what else is illegal? Marijuana, in most states. And so was homosexual marriage for a long while... until only recently. Though the government has yet to recognize it, laws are constantly changing as society's views and opinions change. And I’m sure when you were underage like us you too frequently broke a few laws every now and then.
Also what nationality are you from? America? Me too (unfortunately). Because in America the minimum age of consent is 18... (but of course teens break this law all the time). However what about other countries? Yeah, isn’t Tumblr supposed to be a WORLDWIDE website? In most nations the minimum age is ACTUALLY around 16 on average (or shorter in some countries). So no, we aren’t fucking “minors” in the sense of sexual understanding and activities. And no, this shit isn’t illegal...at least not in like 75% of other countries in the world. Because sexual exposure is becoming much more common in adolescents, and in America there actually IS NO SET LAW in the age of exposure to sexual content- only a law in the age that we can ENGAGE in sexual activity. While there IS a general regulation to children viewing sexual content, this law only STRICTLY applies to children at or under 13, and once the kids hit 15 or 16, that’s when the rules start to get blurry and the expectations can vary. Because by then we’ve seen it all so there’s no point in enforcing these rules to protect us, really. But where DOES this concept become illegal? Child pornography, which indeed is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE and should be banned on here at all costs.
So yeah, no. In most cases its perfectly reasonable for older adolescents to view sexual imagery and read erotica- so long as it’s mostly safe and consensual and they don’t attempt to engage in these elements on their own.
The only reason the staff enforced this rule is most likely because the US government doesn’t want us teens getting horny at school or in public... (a taboo concern really) but that’s a responsibility that Tumblr as a WORLDWIDE website accessible to everyone IS NOT required to hold... and therefore SHOULD NOT force us teens to abide by. We came to Tumblr for a reason... because we wanted to escape the strict expectations upheld to us by society...and even if we are not 18 or over, we SHOULD be given the right to choose whether or not to filter NSFW content.... and be expected to use this privilege responsibly as users.

I never thought I’d cry over a website before…as stupid as it sounds. Especially THIS website… but here I am with tears rolling down my cheeks as I type this. How could this happen.
I’m all alone. I don’t know where my Tumblr friends are…and I don’t know if I’ll ever see them again. They’ve faded into the blackness beyond this impending filter…and my fandom is nowhere in sight. By the time I’m finally old enough to be lifted of this terrible curse… two years from now?! I’ll probably be elsewhere. I’ve been evicted from this safe haven because of what they’ve done. I’ll probably be banned soon anyway because of all this screaming and protesting I’ve resorted to out of despair. I don’t want to go but I’m afraid to stay.
I know @staff won’t be listening to this.. or anything else I’ve said… makes me wonder If there’s even a staff at all. If they can’t hear me… why should I bother?
