Our new film tour Revolt, She Said: Women and Film after ’68 reflects on the volcanic change following the events of May 1968, sharing intersectional, queer and feminist stories of revolution. These stories are inspiring and disquieting to this day. One hundred years since the first women got the vote in the UK, fifty years since the protests of May ’68, where is the feminist revolution now?

Who Cares About Actresses’s launches our Essential Feminist Film Viewing List. #1 - “Audre Lorde: A Litany For Survival.” 

Today, we remember Audre Lorde, visionary writer, radical feminist, lesbian, civil rights activist. The documentary on her life and work, AUDRE LORDE: A LITANY FOR SURVIVAL (1995,USA, 90 min.) by Ada Gay Griffin and Michelle Parkerson, is essential viewing for feminist filmmakers. While rather conventional in form, I never forgot the first time I saw this documentary, sitting next to my best friend and filmmaking comrade. It’s a stunning exploration of the visionary poet’s life, work, politics and relationships. Collaborating with Lorde, Griffin and Parkerson spent years compiling the layered portrait and interviewing her fellow poets and activists, including Adrienne Rich, Sapphire and Sonia Sanchez. For all those who remember the whiteness of Women’s Lib, there are figures like Lorde who knew all along that issues of difference and oppression cannot be separated.
