Kuromaku wants to try something.

With the world of the living mostly back in focus and the tot's connection to more sinister forces, Kuromaku descends in front of Set, just to observe whether the child has any sort of reaction to his presence.

the baby blinks once or twice, what had moved in front of him exactly? at first it appeared to be a shadowy figure with glowing eyes- not unlike his father. but set could tell that wasn’t him. the longer he stared, the more the shadows dispersed and revealed someone familiar.

set didn’t make any noises, rather, he held up his little arms. he wanted to be held by kuromaku. he hadn’t been held by him in some days now.

he missed him.

Kuromaku has held his godchild many times, but rarely did he do it with a particular sense of love in his heart. Of course he would care about the child, but any interaction with him was for pragmatic reasons. Set needed to be fed, he needed to be moved, he needed to be studied, or he needed attention or to be played with. Logical reasons. Kuromaku was happy to help, but he didn't give his actions any second thought.

It's funny, the things one takes for granted once one has lost them. Seeing Set outstretching his arms… Maybe the child did find it nice to be held in Kuromaku's arms, even if Kuromaku didn't realise how much he'd come to miss these small moments. He swallows, face tense as he tries to swallow away the knot in his throat.

Seated on his knees, he does the only thing he can do in his situation and wraps his arms around his godchild to pull him in a hug that neither of them can feel.

"I've missed you too, dear Set."

Brolly can be audibly heard sobbing from inside his room, and rather loudly, too. In fact, his sobs were SO LOUD, that every now and again, they would sometimes echo off of the walls. It is evident that these aren't just regular sobs—they're the sobs of a Jack grieving for his King. In this case, that would be Brolly grieving for Kuromaku.

The worst part about dying is not death itself, but to be doomed to see one's loved ones left behind in turmoil.

When Kuromaku finds Brolly, nothing about his situation seems to have changed. The jack of clubs has learned a lot since he was summoned to the real world, has gained the ability to advocate a little more for himself, but no one could reasonably expect for him to handle a death well.

It tears Kuromaku's heart apart, and yet, there is so little he can do. As expected, when his hand phases through Brolly's mind, he's unable to possess him—either because of the earlier Riccardo incident temporarily weakening his abilities, or because of the unique bond a killer and his victim have.

So he tries something different.

Gently, as if he could physically harm his jack, he lays his hand upon his shivering shoulder, as he would when he was alive and his jack needed comforting. And he keeps his hand there for as long as he needs, until he can sense the warmth of Brolly's body seeping into his fingertips like a limb waking up having its blood supply cut off. Brolly might even feel a ghostly presence leaning on his skin, brushing over him.

"I'm sorry, Brolly," Kuromaku whispers against his jack's hair, knowing well that his words won't be heard, but hoping that their meaning will at least transmit to Brolly's soul. "Please, find peace. You don't deserve to suffer like this. All I want for you is to move on and find happiness again. I'll be fine."

He's well aware of how difficult this would be for someone as soft-hearted as Brolly. Still, with a knot in his throat, Kuromaku hopes that the permission he has given will help Brolly on his road to acceptance.

"The world of the living seems to slowly be coming back into focus after my unfortunate expulsion from Riccardo's body. I can sense my jack nearby, though I cannot see him. Perhaps I can make contact, somehow."

Extending a hand, Kuromaku's incorporeal form phases through Riccardo's head, fingers taking their phantasmal grip on the mafioso's brain. Focusing all his brainpower, Kuromaku attempts to take control.

riccardo had been paranoid since murdering the king of clubs. sleeping with his gun, a habit that only came out when he felt threatened. what was there to be scare of? kuromaku was dead- he wasn’t going to come back! yet… he still found himself waking up at the slightest sound, pointing his firearm at the direction of the noise.

however, it wouldn’t protect him from the phantom that was already close. at first, there was coolness in his skull before it dropped to pummeling temperatures. the mafioso’s gun fell out of his hands. had there been someone he could see, riccardo would of fired his entire round to assure their death. now there he was, still and unable to move on his own accord.

how do you protect yourself from something you can’t see?

Kuromaku hadn't honestly expected this would work.

Possession is the kind of stuff that happens in the movies—and while there was a valid possibility that his ghost form possessed such abilities, he surely figured out how this works rather quickly.

No matter. A sense of vindication floods Kuromaku's incorporeal mind as he feels himself gain control over his assassin's body so seamlessly and he watches the gun tumble to the ground. Were one to look closer, they might even find that the corners of his lips have curled into a devious smile.

"Good morning, Riccardo. What a… brilliant reaction this has been."

that voice… no, it couldn’t be. riccardo’s first instinct would be to face whoever was speaking to him, but he couldn’t do that. most of his body movements ended up becoming small twitches, as if attempting to fight against the ghostly grip on his entirety. he couldn’t win. he had no control.

what was clear to everyone if they were able to see the mafioso’s red eyes is sheer terror that was in them. his lips couldn’t move, but his thoughts were loud.

“ain’t no fuckin’ way it’s you who is doin’ this to me. you’re suppose to be dead.”

There are benefits to this new form. Although no one can see him, Kuromaku must admit that this new way of communicating is quite… intimate.

"Ah. You seem to think that death is the final frontier," are the words that resonate through Riccardo's mind. "I used to believe so too. We seem to be gravely mistaken together, but only one of us is paying the price for that."

Kuromaku gives extending one of Riccardo's legs a try, and he seems successful, albeit very slowly and mechanically. This will need some practice.

"I have plans for you. We will pay my jack and my queen a visit. You may then explain to them the horrific crime you have committed for no good reason whatsoever. They get to be the judge of you afterwards, and there will be nothing you can do but watch as I force you to do it."

A step, then another, and another.

"But first… Perhaps you should take a trip to the showers. We can fix this initial problem you had together, because apparently, you're incapable of taking care of your own body."

Kuromaku seems to have grown accustomed to this possession thing. But just as he thinks he's becoming a pro at controlling Riccardo, something pulls on his spirit—and the next thing he knows, his soul hangs suspended in a dark void, not a sign of humanity in sight.

A sharp pain shoots through his head. Maybe he overextended himself for this first experience, but whatever happened, it seems that either Riccardo's body rejected him, or Kuromaku was too weak to maintain possession for too long.

He will bide his time.
