Evening Stroll
After the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Tonks had spent some time in St Mungo’s to recover. Being an Auror, she had been prepared for the battle, but regardless; she was bested by her own aunt. The duel had left her unconscious and severely injured, but she was tough and she pulled through. Physically she was back to how she should be, fully capable of patrolling Hogsmeade and protecting the residents of the wizarding town, along with the students at Hogwarts. All should have been well for her, shouldn’t it? At least in terms of bouncing back . . . But that wasn’t the case. She was skinnier than before, paler, and rather than the wild colours she liked her hair to be, it was a mousy brown. She’d even been having trouble controlling her metamorphic abilities, which was part of the reason she’d left her hair its natural color, rather than her preferred bubblegum pink.
She knew the sudden change in her appearance and personality hadn’t gone unnoticed, but there were few that knew what had caused it. Many assumed she was grieving Sirius, who had been her second, removed cousin. Truthfully, Tonks wasn’t that close to him ever, considering she was never truly apart of the Black family to begin with. It was all very sad, and yes it upset Tonks that a blood relative and fellow member of the Order had been murdered, but there were a number of reasons for her abrupt change. Having been severely injured, those memories didn’t fail to haunt her. Tonks was strong and fierce but she wasn’t impenetrable. Moreover, she was heartbroken. She had fancied Remus since they had met, and the two had even slept with each other for the fun of it. At least, until it stopped being only fun and games. Tonks had fallen in love, and she’d confessed it to him only to be rejected for the silliest of reasons. Too old. Too poor. Too dangerous. Didn’t he understand that none of that mattered to her?
It was about eight in the evening, and the brunette was strolling down the streets of Hogsmeade. She didn’t have her wand out or appear to be on the hunt for anything in particular, but she was keeping an eye out. Another Auror would be there in an hour or so to take over, since she’d already been patrolling for some time. Her legs were sore and she felt depressed and simply ready to lay down and call it a day. But she remained alert, doing her due diligence as a member of the Order of the Phoenix and an Auror. She heard some commotion from around the corner, and began to walk in that direction, only to find that a couple had gotten into a bit of a spat with one another. Now that was none of her business, so she backed away slowly.
Thump. It was then that clumsy ol’ Tonks, had backed right into someone, causing herself to stumble into him before gaining her balance and whipping around to see who it was. “Remus. . . .” She spoke, her mouth held agape as she looked at him. She hadn’t spoken much to him since he had rejected her, but seeing him now, so near to her . . . She had missed him. “Sorry for that, didn’t know you were right there, came out of nowhere.” She said, attempting to tease him, though only making her heart heavier in doing so. Part of her wished they could pretend she’d never said anything, just so that he could still be apart of her life without this damned awkwardness lingering between them. She turned so that she still had a good view of the area, not wanting to risk paying less attention to keeping a watchful eye out, even though all she wanted to do was melt into him and kiss him, and love him - But that wasn’t going to happen, regardless of her being caught up. “How’ve you been?” (@lupinrcmus)
