I took this shot a couple months ago and I keep coming back to it. It reminded me of something but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Contrast || Having grown up in New Jersey, I didn’t see pelicans until I visited southern Florida as a young girl. I remember being captivated by how the brown pelicans would dive from the air into the water for fish. Ever since I saw my first brown pelican, pelicans have been my favorite bird. I’ve also always associated pelicans with warm weather. So even though I spent 3.5 days in -6 degree Celsius weather on Lake Kerkini photographing pelicans, it still strikes me as odd to see snow capped mountains and pelicans together. Smug || This Dalmatian Pelican on Lake Kerkini, Greece is looking particularly smug, probably because I had my big ole lens pointed at it. 😊 Anyway, if you know me (or have been following my feed for any length of time), you know that pelicans are my favorite bird. And you should also know by now that I love pelican “head shots.” So it was only a matter of time until I posted a head shot of my new favorite pelican - the Dalmatian Pelican. I captured this shot with my backup camera - a Nikon D5500 (cropped sensor) - along with a Sigma 120-300 mm lens with a 1.4x teleconverter. Anthim || A Dalmatian Pelican called Anthim on Lake Kerkini, Greece. Of all the Dalmatian Pelicans on Lake Kerkini, Anthim may be the friendliest of the bunch. Anthim is generally the first to perch on the boat bow and then side shuffle down the rim of the boat in the hope of being rewarded with fish. In fact, I captured this black & white infrared portrait while Anthim sat on the boat’s bow.
