so more on if steve was a swimmer but now steddie too because im simple: so steves had a lot of water related trauma post-season 4 (barb dying in his pool, getting dragged underwater and lowkey drowned/suffocated), so i imagine he has a bit of a hard time swimming after all that. i imagine that he was like “i gotta get over this whole trauma thing to go to college” and maybe he ends up talking about this w eddie. also, maybe eddie can’t really swim (yes, he got to the bottom of lovers lake that one time, but that was controlled drowning idk), so then steve is like “what #weird. i can teach you!” so then eddie learns to swim and helps steve get over his trauma enough to return to competing and training and they fall in love:)

also: eddie doesn’t end up going to college but him and steve get an apartment together in indie while steve attends and swims there. eddie probs still plays w his band and works during the day

i imagine some things steve ends up never being able to get over again would be going deeper than like 12 ft, wearing fins and drag socks because they feel like they’re pulling him back/down.

also literally if anyone ever writes an au where steve is a swimmer it’s something very near and dear to my heart and I think could be a fun character exploration so plz lmk cus I’m not really a great writer but I would read!! like what if he has a lot of nice memories w his parents or something in the pool idk it could be so fire guys

was thinking about how for a lot of fanfics and stuff people will complain about the over exaggeration of height or mass with steddie and wanted to add my two cents or whatever because rather than exaggerating the proportions, I feel like exaggerating some muscle and leanness helps characterize them better? I know this still isn’t super canon accurate, but I drew thwm up w Steve having that characteristic swimmer build and lean muscle +broad shoulders and Eddie being more relaxed w less definition since he’s literally just a nerdy stoner. They’re about the same height tho and wouldn’t look especially different sizes dressed. Also giving Steve a tan because most lifeguards I know are chasing that lol

lowkey fixated on that part where they said Steve was captain of the swim team in highschool; and apparently the duffer brothers said he was going to be this really good swimmer or something, which I think could’ve been a fun given he was like supposed to be this jock guy but more so ended up just being a mediocre basketball player in all the sports scenes we saw. anyways. I like the idea that he really was this like crazy good swimmer and could’ve gone to college w scholarship for the sport but then the upside down stuff and getting beat to shit every other month made him miss a bunch of recruiting deadlines and that’s why he didn’t end up going to college (cuz swimming was his way to get in given his grades wouldn’t pull thru).

So, I like to imagine that over the course of the year following season 3 and through season 4 he was actually working on applications, swimming, and building up a recruiting profile for coaches and stuff. Because he deserves to go to college.

I headcannon him being a sprinter for freestyle and fly- would be just off any NCAA cuts in them I think. Because let him be good at something. I based his times off of the NCAAs 1989 which was coincidentally at Indiana university.
