“It’s better than sleeping pills, but suit yourself. How about work? How is that going for you?” Ah yes, the typical mother-in-law interrogation.

      “That’s true.” a pause. “It’s... good. Not really doing anything right now. Putting a break on everything because of the twins.”

“You look like any typical new parent. Both of you.” Which is just a nice way for her to say ‘you look like shit’. “Chamomile tea helps you fall asleep, whenever you can find time to doze off.”

        “Yup, I know I look like crap.” he smiles a little though. he’s accepted it. “Ech. I hate tea.”

She arches an eyebrow to that near-swear but fortunately doesn’t comment on it. “You get used to it. It’s all about routine and being ready for the worst, should it come. And you both know you always have our support and your parents’, I’m sure.”

       “Yeah, yeah. I know the whole ‘always got someone at your back’ speech.” he chuckles a little bit and rubs at his eyes. doesn’t mean he feels any less tired from late nights thanks to the twins with that knowing support.

“She behaved beautifully, I must admit. From the moment you found out you were having twins to the birth.” She smiles a bit wider thinking of her darling baby girl. “I think she was made to be a mother all along.”

      “Shii----oot.” still gotta work on that. “She’s doing a heck of a lot better than me so far. I keep freaking out. I mean there’s two of ‘em.”

Cats and I have an understanding, but we choose not to interact often.

She takes the pills and pushes them down with water, now smiling for real. “I’m sure. They grow up faster than we expect. We think it’s going to be so long until they’re all grown up and before you know it, the years flew by. But, for now… They are two gorgeous babies. I don’t think I’ve said congratulations to you yet.”

        “Oh, it’s fine.” he’s not all that bothered by it but he also doesn’t want to seem like he’s about to start complaining. “Think Nora’s the one who deserves it more considering she’s the one that had to do the most work--”

“Thank you, darling.” She smiles, though it’s a bit of a forced smile. Obviously she’s never going to think too highly of her daughter’s choice for a husband. But at least she’s polite and doesn’t threaten him every five minutes. “The girls are growing up so fast. How old are they again? Three months?”

       “No problem.”  he tries to be nice just for that very reason. he’s admitted it out loud once or twice but his wife’s parents scare the shit out of him. “Oof, something like that. Gettin’ big too.”

She wheels herself up to the table, always keeping an eye on him and adjusting her glasses to take a good look. “Yes, exactly that. while you’re at it, get me a glass of water too.”

         “Can do.”  he moves over to grab a glass and fills it up with water before handing it over to her.  “Here you go.”

“Oh, there you are. I need my medicine, be a useful dear and get it for me, would you.”

       “Yeah, sure.”  without question, he’s up and searching for said medicine.  “Uh, is this it?”

Not only Thaniel was laughing like the idiot he was, he was also making dirty ass jokes about Cody having ‘some real powerful little seeds’. It would be totally recommended for Shel to give him a good smack right there and then. Meanwhile, Nora stood up to go put the phone back in the rest and looked at him with a contained grin.

“Oh my god.” he groaned out while rubbing a hand down his face. He was making such a grossed out face at his dad’s jokes. “You’re gross dad. Seriously. So gross.” And of course not long after those words were said he heard the slight sound of his mother reaching over to smack him. “Thank you for defending me mom, you were always my favorite--” Not entirely true! But at the moment it was.

“′M sure his dad is laughing til he drops about it,” she snorted. “I will. Nobody cares more about these kids’ health than me. I’ll make sure they’re okay. Y’ just worry about yourselves, aye?”

After giving their goodbyes, the phone call was ended and it wasn’t much longer until Cody’s was over either and he was definitely looking a bit annoyed. Then again he did have his phone pulled from his ear a couple inches while his father laughed and his mother scolded him and told him to calm down before he upset their boy. “Too late for that mom--” He muttered a little bit, knowing she’d never hear him over his father’s obnoxious laughter.

“See y’ in a bit.” After he was gone, she pressed the call button and brought her phone to her ear, waiting for someone to pick up so she could tell them the news.

It took a couple rings of the phone before Zach picked up. “Hello?” he answered with a small smile because he knew it was Nora by the number that flashed on the screen. Or Cody since it was the house phone. But he figured it was Nora since Cody was too afraid to really talk to him.

“Thanks,” she gave him a little smile as she took the phone from his hand and searched her parents’ number on the saved list. “Uhm… I can do it meself. Y’ can go an’ give your parents a call too while ‘M at it?”

“Yeah, okay sure.” he nodded a little bit and moved to pull his cellphone out of his pocket. “I’ll be right back then.” And then he was turning off to go sit in a different room so they each could have their conversation with their parents in peace.

“No, ‘M good, really… Actually, can y’ bring me th’ house phone, please?” She looked over her shoulder and the couch, to where the device was sitting. “Th’ quicker I tell m’ parents the better, I suppose.”

“Yeah, ‘course.” he nodded and walked over to pull the phone off of the receiver to hand it over to her. “Here you go. Do you wanna do it yourself or--?”

Gladly, she got into their home (it was a lot fresher and more pleasant inside) and even hummed softly once she was on the couch. “’M good,” she said. “Just a little stressed, but good.” She then leaned over to remove her outwear slippers and set them aside, letting her bare feet cool down on the cold floor.

“Sorry... again.” he sighed. He wasn’t going to hear the end of this one either. Twice in one day he’s made a fool of himself. Can he go for three? Let’s hope not! “I can grab something for you if you want.”

Well, for the moment, she was not grateful one bit for that tid bit of info, even if she’d get it from her doctor sooner or later. Would’ve rather stay blissfully ignorant to that. Oh well. “I just wanna go sit down…”

“Alright c’mon then.” he sighed and made his way over to her once they were both ready and walked with her into the house. He led her right over to the couch so she could sit down and relax. “You good?”

“Ohhhhhhh… Let’s just go inside, I think m’ feet are about t’ fall off…” At least she wasn’t panicking about it. But she was definitely upset. Definitely gonna have nightmares about it and think about it for the rest of the day. Outstanding. “This sucks.”

“Sorry, hon--” He thought she’d like to know at least. She was going to figure out the possibility sooner or later! He’d figure he’d stop the freak out now instead of when she’s nearly about to burst.
