Six String Revolver InterviewRaven Cain, Hawkeye & Ash Talk Influences, Rock N’ Roll, Zombies, Coffee, and the Road Ahead
Angel:Who are your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your style?HAWKEYE:There have been quite a few over the years. In the beginning, it was KISS and Ace Frehley, along with Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi. Both of those bands — and those guitar players — helped set the foundation for my guitar style and songwriting.Later on, Van Halen, AC/DC, Disturbed, and so many others came into the picture. The list goes on. There have been a lot of bands and individual artists who helped shape what I do.I always say my style is like Heinz 57 — a mixture of many things blended into one.ASH:I draw musical influence from a wide range of sources: guitarists, drummers, keyboardists, symphonic composers — you name it. My style lives in harmonies, groove, and mood. I enjoy cerebral playing, but for me it mainly serves the feeling I’m trying to share.As a guitarist, some of my early influences were Steve Lukather, Neal Schon, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, and bands like Rush, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and The Police. All of that shaped the way I hear music, the way I build parts, and the way I try to support the song.RAVEN CAIN:My influences come from all over the hard rock map. I grew up loving bands that had danger, soul, melody, and attitude. Guns N’ Roses, The Doors, AC/DC, KISS, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath — all of that stuff got into my blood.But for me, it was never just about singing notes. It was about presence. It was about making people feel something. I always loved frontmen who could walk onstage and make the room feel like something dangerous might happen. That shaped me more than anything.I also come from martial arts, philosophy, and survival. So my style is part outlaw preacher, part street fighter, part rock n’ roll storyteller. I don’t want to just sing songs. I want to testify. I want every show to feel like a revival at the Church of Rock N Roll.
Angel:What’s something you listen to that might surprise people, given the music you make?HAWKEYE:Classical music. I love the violin licks, runs, melodies, and scales. There’s a lot of power and emotion in that kind of music, and it definitely finds its way into the way I think about guitar.ASH:What’s surprising anymore? Haha. I listen to R&B, reggae, a lot of Romantic Era classical music, bluegrass, and I really like George Michael’s solo albums from the ’90s. Good music is good music, no matter what box people try to put it in.RAVEN CAIN:People might be surprised that I listen to spiritual music, old country, blues, and even some classical or meditative music. I love anything that has soul in it. I don’t care what genre it is.A sad country song, a gospel choir, an old blues singer, or a hard rock anthem can all come from the same place if it’s honest. I’m drawn to music that feels like it cost somebody something to write it.
Angel:What’s a non-musical skill, hobby, or obsession in the band that has secretly shaped your music?
HAWKEYE:I’m not sure if it’s a skill, but I constantly hear music and guitar riffs in my head. It actually helps me write songs. Sometimes the riff is already there before I even pick up the guitar.ASH:Life shapes music. When you bring a group of people together who all love rock, you never know exactly what you’re going to get.For me, I love the outdoors because of the solitude. I’ll look at the horizon and imagine what’s out there. I’ve seen Google Earth, so I know what’s technically out there, but I imagine it more introspectively — like, what would I do, or who would I be, if I existed out there?I live for discovery. Some people push the boundaries of music to create sounds and tonalities nobody has heard before. I approach it more as discovering how to express music in fresh ways within the tones and sounds I’ve grown to love. Once I run out of ideas there, who knows what comes next? Haha.RAVEN CAIN:Martial arts has shaped everything I do. It taught me discipline, timing, intensity, control, and how to survive. Being a martial artist changes the way you move, the way you breathe, the way you handle pressure, and the way you carry yourself.It also shaped my lyrics. A lot of what I write comes from the warrior path — falling down, getting back up, betrayal, redemption, pain, honor, freedom, and becoming something stronger than what tried to break you.I’m also obsessed with philosophy and the human struggle. I’m always looking at why people suffer, why they fight, why they love, why they destroy themselves, and how they rise again. That all ends up in the music.
Angel:Who in the band would survive a zombie apocalypse the longest — and why?HAWKEYE:Probably Raven. LOL.Number one, they’d never be able to catch him. Number two, they wouldn’t understand the way he is, so they wouldn’t know for sure what he was. They’d probably just leave him alone. Once they saw him, they’d be confused.ASH:We’re already in a zombie apocalypse. I’ll survive as long as God has something He’d like me to do.RAVEN CAIN:Apparently Hawkeye says me, and he might be right. I’ve trained my whole life for chaos. Martial arts, survival mindset, discipline, awareness that is my world.But the real reason I would survive is because I know how to adapt. You don’t survive by being the biggest or the loudest. You survive by being aware, staying calm, making smart choices, and knowing when to fight and when to disappear.Also, let’s be honest the zombies might take one look at me and think, “Nope. That guy already looks infected with rock n’ roll.”.

I do like bigger stages where we can move around without tripping over the microphones.RAVEN CAIN:I love venues that have real energy. Give me a room where the crowd is alive, loud, and ready to be part of the show. It doesn’t matter if it’s a packed club, a festival stage, or a biker bar full of people ready to raise hell — if the audience gives us energy, we’ll give it right back.Of course, I love a good stage with room to move, because Six String Revolver is not a stand-still-and-stare-at-your-shoes kind of band.
