Bernous (Shetland, Scotland; 1851), The Shetland Museum
Initially purchased for the collection in 1978, this ‘Ladies Dress Shawl’ was reputedly commissioned by Edward Standen and Co., London importer of Shetland lace knitting, for display at the Great Exhibition in 1851. A burnous is a North African cloak with fronts that often end as points. It has a simple hood that drapes down the back. It is often made in striped fabric and tassels decorate the hood and front.
Beaded Rainbow Odenwald Shawl!
Lost my mind a little and added (if my math is correct) 5,615 beads to Nim Teasdale's Odenwald pattern. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!
The goal was “soothingly weighted but not uncomfortable to wear, even as someone with chronic pain.” It could have been a little heavier, so maybe I’ll make a shawl with larger beads another time, but I’m very pleased with this one. I used size 6/0 seed beads, applied as I go with a .6mm crochet hook.
Yarn-wise, used 2 cakes of YarnArt Flowers. I knitted the fully purple sections from both, then knitted all the way through the yellow-oranges with a single ball. When I hit the beginning of red-oranges, I used yarn from both cakes, alternating between them. (Not the entirety of both, I played it by ear to make sure I made it through the full rainbow.)
I do have edited charts with bead placements. I will only share them with Nim's permission.
I've done A LOT of knitting/crochet this year while chronic illness kept me from my sewing machine, but I'm feeling much better now. There will be new quilts to look forward to soon, plus a few more yarn crafts to share in the meantime!
So a couple years ago I put an unfinished Shetland lace shawl on my garden fountain so it could be a nicer watering spot for bees.
Both the fountain and what's left of the lace are on the verge of completely falling apart. So I'm getting a new fountain (same model, just not broken).
What should I knit for the bees next? I love knitting intricate traditional lace, but I'm just not a lace or shawl wearing sort of person. This is the perfect solution, I can knit lace with my single ply cobweb weight Shetland wool, and have very happy pollinator recipients.
Help me find traditional and/or vintage lace patterns? The more complex the better.
all of those are brown
here is the picture from the Año Nuevo State Park instagram, the colour is suspected to be from rolling in red algae

One of my all time memories as an autistic child was being put in a "cant read" special class in kindergarten because I wanted to pick my own books as I was an extremely competent reader but they assumed the only reason I would ever want to do this was the books were too hard. The actual problem was I fucking hated Dora the Explorer as a child because I felt talked down to by her and they wanted me to read books about her. They refused to believe even after I proved it several times that I could read. Because I wouldn't read Dora.
So yeah neurodivergent children do act a way
many times adults are like "this child couldn't possibly be possessed by a ghost that understands its own experience and is able to express that," and many times they are dead wrong. haunted dolls rise up
speaking of early reading. in kindergarten I remember being furiously angry and refusing to read the books they gave us because I had already read the hobbit and they wanted me to read about this fucking thing:
which like. if I hadn’t learned to read at home before starting school I don’t think I would have learned to read via reading lessons simply because the content was so condescending. I don’t know why they thought 5-6 year olds would want to read about this fucking creature. every word of huggles was a punishment.
we urgently need to stop being this condescending to children. urgently

coworker: it's good to see that centrifuge getting some use; most people don't like it because it's so sensitive me: *has been devising nobel prize-worthy balance configurations for every single load* haha yeah i guess i've just been lucky with it so far :)
the feelings i'm experiencing about this are akin to when a pet comes up to greet you and its owner is like "omg i never see them go up to strangers like that they're usually so shy"
developing a horse girl-like bond with the centrifuge
centrifuge: *shudders or makes noise* me: *patting its flank* shhhh... it's okay, girl...
I'm fairly certain the answer will be "because they don't want to spend money", but is there a reason your workplace doesn't just get a new centrifuge, maybe one with auto-balancing?
because the centrifuge works fine if you're pure of heart
Wh-what do you mean it’s from a birthday cake

This is what I drew after this situation 👇
