Okay so a continuation of this poorly worded post I made in the middle of watching project hail mary

Obviously like okay it makes sense that Iron Lung and pmh are being put together. They're both unwilling people who were forced to go somewhere by themselves to possibly do something for the good of humanity. But I do think they're fundamentally different. Besides the genre ofc.

I feel like a lot of people talk about Simon's choice to send the blackbox data was like, really beautiful and his first real decision and it shows his humanity and all the things. And that just... doesn't sit right with me? He was indoctrinated his entire life. He grew up in a cult that shaped all of his beliefs until he dared defy them and wound up in prison for over a decade. He was forced into the blood ocean to find the information that he could and was constantly told that he would return and that he would survive and that it was more than him. "More than you" is said throughout the entire film. I don't think him choosing to send the data is him making a choice of his own.

I've never really liked the idea of "the first choice of their own" being... just choosing the thing that everyone around them wants them to do except... willingly instead of being forced. And I don't think Iron Lung is doing this. Simon is coerced and forced throughout the entirety of the movie. Throughout the entirety of his life. The only time he defied that, so many people died and he was put in prison for the rest of his life. The only time he made his own choice, terrible things befell him. I don't think it's beautiful that he sends the data up at the end. I think it's tragic. I think he is once again being convinced that something is more important than him when, in reality, not a single one of these trips has ever yielded anything helpful. They say it's more than him because the COI says it's more than him, but realistically... is it? Will they ever find anything useful? Based on Ava's words we don't even know if they were actually able to retrieve the data.

While Simon technically "chooses" to send it... he's still influenced. It's not a choice he made it's a choice he was convinced he had to do. He doesn't ever make a choice that his own because his entire life he has been indoctrinated into others' beliefs. He has no choice, he has no peace.

Grace... is also forced. He worked on the project, yes. He was interested in the project, but he didn't understand it. Or, he didn't understand how people would be willing to die like that. He is physically forced into the position, and for the majority of it he doesn't even know that. He's just assumed that he had a reason to choose to, even though he knows he is not at peace with the fact that he will not return.

But when Grace chooses not to go home... it does feel like his choice. The movie says that to be willing to die you need to have someone you are willing to die for. Grace did not have that on earth. But he found Rocky and he bonded with him he found that he was someone he is willing to die for. So he didn't go home. That is his choice.

They are both forced on these missions. But I feel like everyone frames both of these movies as movies about a character who does not get a choice, but in the final moments of the movie finally get to make their choice. And I just don't think that's right.

Project Hail Mary is the story of a man who doesn't have a choice is forced to give his life for the possible good of humanity. It is about a man who finds someone he really connects with and cares about beyond anything. It is about a man who does get to make a decision by the end of the movie that is fully his own. And it's a wonderful ending because not only does he save Rocky - he lives. Just not on Earth. He carves out a home for himself and he does what he loves. He saves humanity and Eridians.

That is not what Iron Lung is about.

Iron Lung is also a movie about a man who does not have a choice and is forced to give his life for the possible good of humanity. It is a movie about a man who was indoctrinated his entire life, and is nothing but abused throughout the entire run of the movie. It is about a man who ultimately does everything that is asked of him because what else would he do? And it's tragic because he does not get grace or peace from it. He dies. (i'm aware there's a lot of theories about what happens i'm not talking about those) He gives his life for a cause that is extremely likely to always be futile.

And like??? That's beautiful. I love the differences. I think that makes the idea of their interaction even more interesting. They have a lot of similarities in their origins but their stories are different. And I think Rocky is a really big part of that. Rocky is what made Grace be able to have a choice. If he hadn't met Rocky, he would have died. He probably wouldn't have saved anyone. There would be no choice to make. But because he met someone who he decided he was willing to die for, he did have a choice. Simon didn't have that. We don't know if Simon ever had a real friend. If he ever had anyone he could depend on. But in the runtime of the movie? Definitely not. He didn't have anything to be able to make that choice because he had no one to make the choice for.

There's definitely the argument of for humanity. And honestly that is valid. He cares deeply about humanity, and I think in that sense it was a choice. I do think he wanted to save them because he's just so full of hope and love for people. But I do still think that it is ultimately nothing but tragic, because that hope goes nowhere. There is no hope for him. You can argue that he makes a choice, but he only makes a choice for an abstract idea of something he could love. Of something that could love him.

I don't know. They're both wonderful movies. I will be thinking about them forever. I do think they're very different though, and I think the difference is in their agency as people. Grace regains his agency because he has someone that gives him the opportunity to even make a choice in the first place. Simon never has agency, and any small sliver of it that he is given is devastating because it will never be returned to him and he will never see the fruits of it.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 51:

“Little Friends”

Set during the early days of Bruno living in the walls, he discovers the rats living in the walls and at first he dislikes them, but he soon grows fond of them and befriends them.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 52:

“Antonio’s Problem”

Set after a weeks (or days) after the fall of the Casita, Mirabel, Pepa, and Felix notice Antonio being sad that he lost his gift of talking to animals, they take him to a farm to hang out around animals in the hopes to try and cheer him up a little

"The New Me"

Camilo decides after some thinking that what he is currently isn't good enough, so he decides to change himself to become a cooler and edgier version of his previous self, called "Carlos". At first the family thinks that he is just pulling a prank or going through a "phase" and he'll get over it, but as the days go on and he starts to get more "out of control" with his new persona, the family unanimously decides that enough is enough and they stage an intervention to try and get Camilo back into his old self and figure out why is he doing this. During the intervention, Camilo breaks down and reveals his problems with his identity and issues he has been bottling up and the family convinces Camilo to go back to his old self with them helping him out find his true self in return.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 54:

"Bandits and Detectives"

After a string of break-ins and stuff being stolen from the Encanto, the villagers and Alma are left wondering who's behind these crimes and why? But Mirabel who starts to notice a flaw in the crimes that makes her believe that these crimes aren't what they seem to be, so she decides to become a detective to try and find out who is behind all of this, along the way she gains the rest of the Madrigal grandchildren's trust to help find this bandit. The grandchildren do actually catch the bandit and as it turns out, it was actually one of Antonio's Coati's who kept sneaking out and stealing stuff for the fun of it.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 55:

"New Friends"

After Isabela comes to the realization that she really doesn't have too many people she considers "friends"; she asks Mirabel to help her get some new friends to make. It's there we're introduced to Isabela's soon to be girlfriend that I explained in Episode 25 of my Encanto Series Episode Ideas.

“The Art Project”

Mirabel is assigned an art project by her teacher to make something she adores, after some thinking, she decides to paint a family portrait which turns out to be more difficult than she expected as there 12 Madrigals and all.

“Camping”

Mirabel, Luisa, and Isabela decide to camp out for a night in the rainforest for fun, but as it turns out, camping isn’t as easy as it seems, and it turns out to be quite an interesting and eventful camping trip experience for them.

“Antonio’s Adventure”

Antonio discovers a secret area in his room that he (or anybody) has ever found out about, so he and his trusty animals set out to explore this secret room and see what kind of mysteries lie in there.

“Stressful Day”

After Pepa has a very stressful day and nobody there to help her (as they’re busy with other things), Pepa tries to relax and calm down by herself, but eventually Luisa comes and helps her as she notices her or having a good day and she has some experience with relaxing and calming down herself.

"Lucky Agustin"

Agustin finally gets a day in a very long time where nothing bad happens to him, no accidents, no bee stings, nothing. He fully is expecting something to happen the whole day, but nothing bad happens to him or he avoids it somehow.

"Sick Day"

Casita feels a bit sluggish today and as it turns out, she is a bit sick today, so the family tries to take care of the Casita while it recovers.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 62:

“Missing Chispi”

One day, Antonio can’t find Chispi anywhere no matter how hard he looks, so he and the family tries to find her. But after hours of looking Antonio cries because she might be lost forever, but then she appears and as it turns out, she was just going out on an adventure of her own and was trying to find the Madrigals as well at the end.

“Bedtime Story”

Bruno and his rats preform a telenovela for Antonio as a bedtime story for him, but it ends up with the whole family joining in with Antonio as the audience

Encanto Series Episode Idea 64:

“Making Up the Past”

Isabela starts to really think about the past and what she did to Mirabel in the past. But she really doesn’t know how to apologize for it, so she asks for Luisa and Antonio for advice for what she should do. Eventually it ends with Isabela making a heartfelt apology to Mirabel about the past. But Mirabel already forgave Isabela back during the hug and after “What Else Can I Do?”, but she does still accept the apology as she really meant it for the bottom of her heart and all.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 65:

“Triplets Day Out”

Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno decide to have a day out for themselves, something they haven’t been able to for many years (even before Bruno left), the day is filled with loads of things the three wanted to do together for a while and it helps with Bruno coming out his shell and being more open to people and his family.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 66:

“Apprenticeship”

Mirabel starts to think about the future and what job she’ll want to do in the future, after some thinking, she decides to do some work as a teacher, caretaker, and seamstress to see what she likes. After doing some work for the three jobs, she decides to pick the seamstress job as it was the one she had most fun with and enjoyed the most. (she liked doing the other two as well don’t worry)

“Camilo’s Makeover”

After starting to figure out who he really is, he goes to Isabela to try for advice and maybe even change up his outfit. Isabela agrees and the two work together and try figure out what Camilo’s new outfit should be.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 68:

"Seamstress's Apprentice"

Mirabel starts her first proper day of being an apprentice to a seamstress and it goes quiet well with her learning new things about being a seamstress that he didn't know before.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 69:

"Hide and Seek"

Mirabel and Antonio decide to play hide and seek across Antonio's room, but it ends up with the whole family joining in at the end.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 70:

"Stage Fright"

Camilo is ready to do one of his first plays in front of the town, but the issue is he has stage fright, so his friends and Mirabel help him give him the confidence to do his role.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 71:

"Isabela's Imperfect Birthday"

It's Isabela's birthday and since it'll be the first time Isabela celebrates her birthday with her new imperfect dress and look, her birthday party becomes, well, imperfect, but something she loves at the end of it!

Encanto Series Episode Idea 72:

"Snow Day"

One day, the town of Encanto and the Madrigals wake up to see that it snowed a little bit last night. So the town and the family have fun in the snow, for the day.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 73:

"The Test"

There's is a very important test for Mirabel and Camilo at school that they have to study for, Camilo slacks off until Mirabel basically drags him into doing a study session with him.

Encanto Series Episode Idea 74:

"Argument"

Camilo and his girlfriend get into a bit of an argument which leads to them both questioning if their relationship is going to last or not. But with Mirabel and Dolores, and Mariano's help, they show the both of them how to solve an argument in a nice and civil manner and that it's ok to disagree on somethings.
