It’s!!!! Javert week!!! Tablets being a pain so here’s the first of many javert!!! Featuring tiny baby enjolras because dads are my one true weakness
Well, we’re on day three of Javert week, and we have all of two people actively contributing to the celebration. I’m not going to lie, I’m more than a bit disappointed, and more than a bit annoyed.
Come on, fandom, this is a really important character and next to nobody wants to talk about him. I understand that it can be daunting taking on a fully-developed man from the main cast, but… he’s a fully-developed man from the main cast and Hugo poured all that work into him for a reason. Even if you disagree with what he does, the fact remains that he’s a central part of the story as a whole, that what he represents has multiple layers to it, and that there’s more than enough there for people to work with no matter where they’re coming from. Javert is one of the driving forces of the plot, he’s the one who kicks most everything into gear. Without him, none of the story would have happened, or maybe it would have, but that’s a game of chance. You wouldn’t have him at the Gorbeau house, though you might not have had him there in the first place because there would have probably been no Valjean in Paris, and Cosette would still have been with the Thénardiers, because Fantine probably wouldn’t have come to the mayor’s attention. Maybe he goes and fetches Cosette anyways, and lives with Fantine in Montreuil-sur-Mer. The Thénardiers still go under, still travel to Paris, the Gorbeau house still happens, but Javert isn’t there. Marius has little he can do and part of the Patron-Minette is not apprehended. Valjean isn’t around for the barricades, so maybe Marius meets Courfeyrac, becomes fully involved in the revolution, and dies on the barricade, or lives but never recovers without Cosette there to nurse him. There are so many what-ifs and a huge portion of them have to do with Javert taking action, even if that action is negative. Antagonists have their place in the story, too — antagonist, not villain. He’s still not the villain of Les Mis. Which we could be talking about. Because it’s Javert week.
Please, please don’t let this week pass by with nothing to show for it. If we can have three separate celebrations of the same character, we can certainly manage seven days for just the one who nobody ever talks about anyways. Just take a day, write up something about Javert, put it in the #Javert Week tag. I know that we’re not all artists, some of us can’t sing, some of us can’t sit down and read Hugo’s massive novel, but I think that most of us have seen some adaptation, so talk about that. Just. Please. One minute on one day for you to stop and think about this character. I don’t care what conclusion you come to about him at this point, not at all, but don’t let this die because he’s not the fandom’s favorite.
We love you so much, sweetheart! Please don't worry - your blog is so wonderful, it always has been. Your muse is perfect and so are you! Just breathe, we are always here for you. Rant, cry, take some time off, do whatever you need to do. You're amazing, darling, never forget that. You are not alone. You are NEVER alone. X
(( Thank you. Really, thank you--you and anyone and everyone nice enough to spare me kind, comforting words. I don't know what I've done to deserve your love, but thank you. Even if I can't quite believe it, even if it doesn't immediately fix everything, it helps knowing that I'm not entirely alone and somebody is willing to help. Thank you. ))
His face spasms, shock and disbelief and sorrow threatening to push through, but he swallows them down and brings up the cold mask. With a grunt, the inspector steps forwards and grasps Enjolras by the upper arm. If Aurélien will not come to him, Javert shall go to Aurélien. His fingers curl around the blond’s bicep, holding tight and squeezing a light warning. He has never been violent with Enjolras and he will not start now, but the pressure will serve to remind the boy who is in charge, at the moment — and it is not the glorious chief of the soon-to-be-erected barricade. If Javert has his way, there will be no barricade, and Enjolras will never hold the title of “chief”; he will return home and think about what he has attempted to do, here; hopefully the regret and reasoning will come in time.
”You are trying my patience. Come home, now. I will not ask again.”
Enjolras starts backwards, almost flinching away as Javert grips his arm. It is not precisely fear that guides his feet back, but a mixture of wariness and surprise. He does not think Javert will grow violent, not when the man has been anything but aggressive all his life; but he also knows that it is far from wise to cross the Inspector, especially as directly as he has. The sharp pressure of fingers digging into his bicep reminds him that, at least for the moment, he is not the one with authority or power.
It is fear, then, that drives his eyes away from Javert's face to fix upon a particularly interesting patch of dirt on the street. Fear that he will not be able to resist Javert, now; fear that he will cave, that he will falter, that he will turn back. It is too late. Your choices were made long ago--don't you dare walk away now.
"...I have given you my answer; I cannot and will not change it. We have already spent years arguing this, so let us not waste time once more by dredging up debates long buried. Let me go."
Sometimes things happen. Things I find even I cannot control. Shit happens, that’s all it is. And one day - -
independent agent carolina from red vs blue. private & selective. icons. roleplay length variable. casual blog ; you’ll find me on pxntmercy most of the time. under massive construction. pretty nice mun on any day. hi!
— — One day. I’ll say ;
G O O D B Y E.
A firm believer in the people’s right to be heard, I should think.
That better not be all you believe in. Just being heard is nowhere near enough.
You gave a two hour speech on the benefits of a republican system of government in the back of this café what in the world did you expect me to think I mean really.
……oh. I wasn’t… expecting to be watched by random strangers. Who the hell are you, anyway?
Excuse me revolutionary fervor is nothing to be offended about. Now I’m offended.
Whoever said that revolutionary fervour is bad? What I object to is that you automatically assume things about me that you have no right to assume and no business assuming!
Just a gut feeling y’know.
I think you’re making unwarranted assumptions about me and I am offended.
do you like revolution
What makes you think that--
”No, I don’t think so.” He can feel his teeth puncture his tongue, and finds, to his great surprise, that he does not mind the taste of copper filling his mouth. Javert licks his lips. Red. Like Enjolras’s coat. “Come here.”
"—No."
The answer is stronger this time, more confident and sure. The unexpected encounter took him off guard, but he is recovering quickly; his choice was made long ago, and it is far too late now to change his mind. The Revolution, the Future, is so very close, and it must take precedence over all else. And if it feels like his heart is being ravaged in his chest, well—sacrifices must be made for a cause much greater than himself.
Happy Barricade Day! — or not…
I suppose you’ve already seen this coming. ;) Given how I’ve previously killed the rest of the Amis quite dead, it was only fair that these two got their own piece. [It would’ve gotten posted sooner, only I kept obsessively fixing “just one more thing”. Even now, my fingers still itch.] But hey, isn’t this ‘round about the time they buy the proverbial, ah, barricade, anyway? ;)
—dons running shoes just in case fleeing becomes necessary—
To close, I will quote Mme Bahorel from Abaisse again on the subject of Jehan:
"Prouvaire was taken, but like hell he went without a fight if his dying words were the shout "Vive la France, vive l’avenir"."
[Note: Panel 3 on page 3 is simply Invictus from a different angle - as laughingandlyric's already figured out from that photo I posted of Major Winters. ;)]
Phantom faces at the windows. Phantom shadows on the floor. Empty chairs at empty tables. Where my friends will meet no more.
OH NO YOU DIDN’T
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!
BARGING IN ON ME AND MY GUITAR?
So I went ahead and did the thing because cast change is in June oh gods
