hi hello itsme. i have some kind of bad news

starting may 30 i'll be taking a tumblr hiatus. this isn't my own choice. i've been using a school-issued computer to access the internet for the past school year, and may 30 is my last day of the school year, and i'll have to return it.

oh yeah i've been a minor this whole time. sorry i didn't tell anyone, it was probably irresponsible of me, i just didn't want anyone to not take me seriously.

my parents don't really let me have internet access because theyre religious nuts and dont want me to See Gay Stuff. they know now that i don't give a shit about religion and i'm more open about it with them, but developing my feminist consciousness has been a miraculous effort.

until i move out in a couple of years, i won't be able to come back to the internet, tumblr specifically, permanently. i'll try to pop in from time to time but it won't be easy.

A Case of Gaslighting and Corporatism: Stella Liebeck v. McDonald's ☕🤡🍟

Whenever someone brings up frivolous lawsuits or obvious product warnings, someone will sarcastically bring up the "woman who didn't know coffee is hot" or the "woman who got millions of dollars for pouring coffee on herself." This bit of myth is so commonly accepted it is now part of the cultural zeitgeist in the US supposedly helping prove how litigious and greedy Americans are.

However, everything you've heard about this case is wrong,

Stella Liebeck was a 79-year-old woman in 1992 when her grandson drove her through the McDonald's drive-thru and bought her a coffee. She spilled the coffee in her lap while attempting to add cream and sugar, which immediately gave her third-degree burns. The coffee was much hotter than it should have been and McDonald's knew this and had been told this on several occasions. They obstinately refused to turn down their coffee machines to a reasonable temp that would not cause third-degree burning in 3 seconds. Liebeck only sued for her medical expenses, $20,000. McDonalds refused to pay and so they went to court. They claimed she was stupid and irresponsible, a stupid, scatter-brained little lady who was to blame for the severity of her injuries. Because of the severe nature of her burns (which took her years of treatment to fully heal) and McDonald's callousness, a jury saw fit to give her $2.7 million (what McDonald's would have made in two days just on coffee). That number was reduced to $600k after McDonald's appealed. To add insult to injury, Liebeck was given a gag order so she could not tell what really happened while McDonald's was free to spin a tale to the public and to news outlets that absolved them of all wrongdoing and made her a laughing stock. Liebeck passed away in 2004.

Another thing i like to mention about this case: i take issue with everyone phrasing it as she spilt the coffee on her "lap"

her inner thigh and genitals were mutilated with the burns. If this were a man, no one would be laughing about the spill on his "lap", they would be horrified at the mutilation of his penis and testicles, and distraught that a mere coffee could do such damage - men would be afraid of MacDonalds coffees.

I do honestly believe part of the reason this case was so mocked and she was so humiliated by media is because she was an older woman, not "a poor young man, now made infertile, scalding burns over his penis, unable to ever enjoy sex again, all because some evil barista was negligent in her[presumed female] work!"
