Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.

“Thank the maker,” Cullen hissed under his breath, “It’s merely a scratch.”
They had been sparring when El had gotten distracted and Cullen had caught her arm with the tip of his blade. They were practice swords, but the tips were still sharp enough to rend flesh. Particularly on thin skin. El had stumbled backwards with a cry, bringing her arm to her chest as a fan of blood sprayed across her shirt and the dirt. It had been far bloodier than the cut had warranted and the next thing she had known Cullen had her out of the ring and sat in a chair.
Elayna looked down at where he kneeled between her knees, his gloved fingers a bracelet around her wrist. His other hand pressed a cloth - wet, cold, and sweat-stained - against her arm. Her lower lip wobbled as he glanced up at her, “It does still hurt a great deal, Commander.”
He checked the wound again, a small cut along her forearm, and frowned. The bleeding had long since stopped. The skin around the cut was starting to bruise. He looked at her again, his brows knitted together, “Shall I call for a healer?”
“No!” El shook her head fast, “No, I don’t think it needs a healer. I think it just… needs some comfort.”
“Some comfort?”
“Yes, some comfort.”
“How does one…” he sat the cloth to the side and took her hand in both of his. He looked at the wound utterly perplexed, “How does one comfort a scratch?”
“With a kiss!” A smile wrestled its way to her lips as he chuckled and dropped his forehead to their joined hands.
More to the ground than to her, he said, “You want me to kiss it and make it better?”
“Mmhmm.”
He smiled up at her, shaking his head in bemusement before pulling her arm level with his mouth and placing a kiss against the cut. He kept his eyes on her as he did so and then pressed the palm of her hand against his cheek, “Better, my lady?”
El swallowed and nodded, “I think I hurt my ass too when I fell.”
His laugh was still rumbled through his chest when he pulled her to her feet and shoved the sword back into her hands. He spun her towards the sparring ring and prodded her in the back, “You aren’t getting out of training that easily.”
