"i want old fandom back :(" y'all can't even handle people shipping fictional characters with a 2 year age gap, what makes you think you'll be able to handle all the stuff old fandom came with?
i think a lot about how much pressure antis put on themselves with their purity shit and how many of them must absolutely hate themselves for secretly being intrigued by or even just curious of the āwrongā stories/narratives.
like.
imagine thinking reading a story was the same as literally going out and doing the worst things that happen in it to an actual person IRL.
and so many of them are so young! and the way social media nowadays works exposes them so early to how shitty the world can be and itās only natural theyāre scared and, since they canāt change society at large as quickly as theyād like to make it less scary, of course theyāre projecting this fear onto something more accessible to them that they feel they can change if theyāre only loud enough about how scared they are.
idk where Iām going with this but.
i just really think a lot about this and canāt help but feel bad for these kids.
(i hope once they grow out of this anti culture, they find something more productive to put their energy in to preferably something that doesnāt fuck over ppl who are actually on their side when it comes to wanting to change stuff on a larger scale.)
#i keep thinking about that too #they are often so young #and itās really worrying how much they try to control their own and everyone elseās thoughts about fiction and are not allowed to explore a #ny āāimpureāā concepts in fiction #which is the place where this exploring of darker or unhealthy themes #is actually healthy for youĀ (via pandirpus)
I get very sad and worried about young antis, and young people caught in anti-heavy circles, a lot. Like, the kind of shame thatās being inflicted on them by their peers for having what amounts to bad thoughts is heartbreaking to think about
Being interested in a fictional depiction doesnāt mean that itās something you want in reality.
Not feeling a socially acceptable (in anti circles) amount of disgust at a fictional depiction doesnāt mean youāre ok with it in reality.
Being fascinated or thrilled by dark and fucked up topics in fiction is normal and is not unhealthy
Whatever sexual fantasies you have are probably as old as human brains, in some form or another, and youāre not bad or wrong or destined to do bad things because of them

I try to stay away from a lot of fandom discourse, but since Iāve been seeing this on my dash again and in tags, I feel the need to make a statement on this, particularly for any young fans who follow me that might get drawn into this mindset.
Stay away from purity culture. Warn your friends away from it too, if you see them starting to fall for it. Itās very easy to get drawn into it
Almost always, it starts with one of three roots, pedophilia, incest and/or abuse. Usually itās pedophilia. Funnily enough, thatās also what congress usually uses to try to justify passing bills that undermine online privacy & security. Because itās an easy, extreme target, and when people attempt to argue against it, itās nice and easy to say āOh so you like pedophiliaā rather then actually engaging with their argument.
The logic goes like this, although thereās many forms of it.
āPedophilia is bad.ā -> Obviously, you agree with this. Youāre a reasonable person, and the idea that anyone would do something like that to a child is horrible. This is a normal human reaction.
āBecause pedophilia is bad, all fictional explorations of it must be equally bad.ā -> Here you might hesitate, but it adds up, doesnāt it? The thought of pedophilia in any context probably gives you a bad feeling, that makes you inclined to go along with this logic.Ā
āAnyone who creates content with a fictional exploration of pedophilia is also bad.ā -> Maybe you pause here, or maybe you donāt. But still, it adds up, itās a very easy flow. After all, weāve decided that that is Bad, so why would anyone Good want to create something like that?
āSince people who create content with a fictional exploration of pedophilia are just as bad as people who engage in pedophilia in real life, itās okay to harm them.ā -> Hereās where you might pause again. The argument might not win you over entirely, you might not be willing to do harm yourself, but you may be a lot more willing to turn a blind eye to harm being done to someone. Or to consider it ājustifiedā.
The pattern now repeats for anything else thatās considered āmorally impureā, and āpedophiliaā is expanded and expanded, often to ridiculous points, such as merely shipping two underage characters. āAbuseā becomes any ship that the person pushing doesnāt like, for any reason. And so on and so forth.
This is the foundation of āantiā culture, and itās important to be aware of it so you can catch this false equivocation. Fictional explorations of something, are not the same as the thing itself. Fictional explorations are fiction. The characters are not real people. There is no actual harm being done. Equating fake harm and real harm is a dangerous, slippery slope, which leads us to fundamentally flawed ideas of moral purity. Itās a form of controlling people & making them feel guilty for their very thoughts, rather than holding people accountable for their actions.Ā
A very handy trick for when you encounter this sort of argument, is to replace whatever the selected purity term is with murder. After all, we can all agree that murder is bad, but at the same time, we understand that a murder in a book =/= a murder in real life.
Letās see that argument again, shall we?
āMurder is badā
āBecause murder is bad, all fictional explorations of it must be equally bad.ā
āAnyone who creates content with a fictional exploration of murder is also bad.ā
āSince people who create fictional explorations of murder are just as bad as the people who commit murder in real life, itās okay to harm them.ā
Hopefully, itās now easy to see why the above argument is fundamentally flawed.
Keep your eye out for purity culture in your fandom spaces, and when you see it, refuse to engage with it. Warn your friends if you see them falling into the same traps, although try to be kind about it; this is a very easy thought pattern to fall into. I donāt recommend trying to argue/debate antiās. The attention only feeds them. Block them instead. Donāt let people control or shame you for what you create or consume, and donāt control or shame others for what they create or consume.
Also, as a note, let me be clear about something. If you are uncomfortable with any of the above discussed things, or anything in general in fiction (ie, underage ships, murder, incest, abuse, penguins, needles, etc), thatās perfectly fine (itās also called a squick, for those that havenāt heard that term before). Absolutely control your fandom experience by blocking people, filtering tags, unfollowing, etc. However, just because you are uncomfortable with something, does not give you the right to control other people. Other people have no right to control what content you create or consume, and you have no right to do that to them either.Ā
Okay?
āItās a form of controlling people & making them feel guilty for their very thoughts, rather than holding people accountable for their actions.Ā ā
āFictional explorations of something, are not the same as the thing itself. Fictional explorations are fiction. The characters are not real people. There is no actual harm being done. Equating fake harm and real harm is a dangerous, slippery slope, which leads us to fundamentally flawed ideas of moral purity.ā
Fictional characters are not real people.
If I kill off a character, I am not a murderer.
Also, creators are not obligated to explore so-called āproblematic contentā in only certain ways. Creators are allowed to create things simply for the enjoyment of it and do not need to justify their reasons for it or use said creations as a proclamation of their real life views and morals, because those things are not synonymous.
Creators are also not obligated to explore so-called āproblematic contentā only under certain conditions.
You will see people (even well-meaning people) saying things like āWell, itās okay to create X content if the creator is processing their own trauma/if it happened to themā or similar sentiments (for example, someone saying a rape victim writing about rape āis fineā since the creator could be using fiction as a coping mechanism), and that also is a slippery slope that heads straight into forcing strangers to out their trauma(s) publicly to be allowed to create in peace, without the often brutal harassment creators face from antis participating in purity culture.
Even if someone has what you would consider a āvalidā reason for creating content you find upsetting, not only are they not obligated to justify themselves in general, no one is entitled to knowledge of anyone elseās trauma. Itās not anyoneās business period, but itās certainly not anyoneās business as a means of validating their choices in writing or reading fictional stories.
I'm just going to swing in to say that poshippers don't realize that "antis" are not people who have a normal, human reaction to the taboo. They wouldn't care if the fiction in question was potrayed as bad. Writing and reading porn about children is totally different from Lolita or GOT because those instances make the relationships look as uncomfortable and abusive as they are.
--
..... so how much of this "taboo" fanfiction has this anon read? Because I'm betting it's not a whole lot.
Antis mostly don't give a shit if it's portrayed as bad or not. If it goes against their line in the sand morals, they're against it.
I got canceled for a fic about discussing potential future sexual intimacy in a post assault in a relationship. It's a fucking hurt/comfort fic.
According to rainn.org, 1 out of 9 girls under 18 and 1 out of 20 boys under 18 will experience abuse or assault. And that number has gone down from what it was.
Telling people they can't explore or discuss taboo topics is how people get groomed, full stop.
I think the thing that gets me about all of this is the overwhelming reek of religious fundamentalism, albeit in a different hat.
Its taken me literal years for me to undo some of the damage that growing up in that kind of culture (that my parents didn't even tout much!!) to realize that no, virginity =/= purity and that is an inherently damaging and dangerous idea to basically everyone. And equally, no sex/sexual feelings/behaviors =/= evil either.
And guess what? I'm still an ace-spec virgin in my 30s with trust issues out the wazoo!
But I'm no longer afraid or ashamed of my own sexual feelings and being human.
In fact If I had come to terms with that earlier, I might've avoided a life changing injury.
So no, I will not back down. I will not be quiet. I want other people to not go through what I did. Because beside the being human and adult bit of sexuality, it's a damn good indicator of certain health issues that can destroy your life if you don't pay attention to them.
And that's not evil, bad, wrong, or whatever other negative term you want to apply to it.
I am so fucking sick of the word "grooming".
So you, a teenager, weaseled your way into a public (private) discord server with NSFW stuff on it. KNOWING it was a NSFW server.
You found NSFW stuff on said server.
People continued posting NSFW stuff in their dedicated NSFW server.
And now you're upset that you're being "groomed" because they didn't immediately change in their behavior in their dedicated NSFW server that you begged to get into?
I'm sorry but that's not grooming! That's fucking around and finding out!
You can't constantly be handled with kiddie gloves, cry "groomer!!!" by hunting for normal adult behavior and then run back crying to mommy and internet clout/canceling machine because you saw NSFW stuff!
I'm sorry to say this, but grow the fuck up. The world doesn't cater to you and your underage cronies. Once you hit 18 it's lights out on the kids gloves and you'll have no idea how to navigate anything in an adult way. Suddenly the "but I'm a minor!" doesn't work anymore and no one gives a shit anymore.
Welcome to adulthood.
Good luck. You're gonna need it.
Sometimes being the mum who exists in fandom spaces leads to awkward, even concerning, conversations. Such as the one which happened this morning. The mum of my daughter's best mate asked me if one of their mutual friends had sent her a specific message. This message was a link to a fic on ao3, if this had been a G rated fic this conversation would not have happened. It was not G rated. It was an E rated fic. Our kids aren't even 12 yet. As it happens, both of our kids have their internet access heavily locked down and monitored. They have phones because of how their school manages homework. The mutual friend, however, is not so monitored. Or she wasn't, given what her mum found she's about to be. This kid had found a fandom, joined it, and found it chock full of antis. The fic had been sent to her by one of them as an example of the sort of terrible people out there who need to be harassed and attacked because they wrote a smutty story.
Someone thought it was appropriate to send written porn to an 11 year old to encourage her to attack the author.
This resulted in a very awkward conversation where I had to explain to multiple horrified parents the anti culture that is becoming so prevalent. The fact that there are adults who use that purity message to groom kids. The way they escalate and how it bleeds into real life. One parent told me she'd wondered why her 14 year old was suddenly concerned about the two year age gap between her parents. The more I explained, the more absolutely ludicrous it sounded and the more baffled these poor mums looked. More than once I was told "but the characters aren't real, it's really weird but it isn't hurting anyone". Which is the point. The fictional situation isn't hurting anyone. The person who sent porn to an 11 year old is.
Was the person who sent it the author? Doubtful, that thing was tagged in the extreme. Was the person who sent it an adult? Almost certainly. The parent who's child received the original message has found more concerning stuff and gone to the police, but from the language the person doing the sending was in the US. We aren't. Did my daughter receive it? No, she isn't interested in that fandom and therefore wouldn't have bothered with it. Is this the fault of the author? No, they didn't send the link, they didn't ask to be harassed, they wrote a story and put it on ao3, the website created in response to rampant censorship and designed to allow for all kinds of fiction. Is this the fault of the parents? Partially, they should have been looking at their daughter's internet use and clocked what was happening sooner. Is this the fault of the child? No, she's 11, she didn't know better.
This has been a difficult day. Multiple parents have had their eyes opened to parts of fandom culture they had no idea existed. And the thing of it is, they aren't concerned about the why of anti rhetoric. They don't care about the adults writing about teens or rape or incest or torture or any of the rest, because they looked at the clearly tagged and rated fics and figured that it worked the same as a warning on any streaming service. They only cared because some utterly vile individual decided to expose their child to something this girl might not have looked at for years.
Proshippers did not cause what I have spent afternoon helping several sets of parents navigate. Antis did. Normally I'm fairly quiet about the whole debate because I just want to get on with my life and share my experiences. Today I got dragged into that mess in my every day life and the adults in the equation didn't react the way Antis like to think they would. They didn't condemn the author. They condemned the anti who shared the work with a preteen.
This has kicked off, so a brief update:
I don't know all the details and can't share a lot of them because of legal stuff. What we do know is the anti responsible is in the US so whatever happens with them is out of our hands (kiddo's mum relayed this, don't ask for details because I don't have them). Turns out this poor kid had also been exposed to NSFW fanart and a few other fics before we caught on. She is not in a good place, and breaking the mindset is not easy.
So fuck the anti rhetoric. All you're doing is protecting works of fiction at the expense of real children, and I despise that.
Ok, so I don't have an update about the child most hurt by all of this. Mostly because investigations into stuff like this is slow at the best of times, and international investigations are even bloody slower, but also because it's none of anyone's business at this point and I'm not going to spread anymore of this kid's business over the internet. The awareness of the harm done to them is enough. I do, however, have something I need to add because some people lack the critical thinking ability to do the really fucking bloody obvious:
Do not come onto this post with your comments or your reblogs that contain the phrase "I don't agree with proshipping but...". Alright? Just don't.
"Pro" a prefix meaning "for". "Anti" a prefix meaning "against". Alright. End of. Proshipping is simply ship and let ship. Shut up and mind your own business about whatever that person is shipping. Because this post isn't a discourse about whether there are things people should be allowed to ship and write about or not. This post is about the very real harm the so called anti community is doing to very real people in order to protect fucking pixels.
You think proshipping is the thing causing the harm? The people who make their work and tag it to shit before posting so that the people who want to see it can, and the people who want to avoid it are able to avoid engaging? The person who wrote an E (for explicit, this was ao3 remember) story, posted it on the website created so that people could ship their ship and write their dark and nasty fic without having it deleted or being persecuted for it, and tagged it so clearly that I didn't even need to open it to know it contained specific themes. That person? You think that person did the harm when it was actually some purity obsessed asshole who sent it to a literal, physical, real child? You really think the person who tagged their stuff so thoroughly to protect people who didn't want to read it from reading it is the person responsible for the harm done to that child? And you're going to come into the comments on this post and go "I don't agree with proshipping but..." at me. Fuck right off. If that's your first thought, get off the internet, go take a good hard look at yourself in the mirror and contemplate why you're getting your knickers in a twist over works of fiction. Because people like you are the ones on the slipperly slope to harming real, living, breathing children. Not the poor bugger who just wanted to write and share a work of fiction for reasons of their own.
We've been saying for years that this culture of exposing minors to NSFW, dark, and disturbing content in the name of callout posts actually ENABLES predators to groom and traumatise minors, and here you have it. Yet another anecdote showing the harm done. When will this stop?
Honestly antis used to really piss me off but now I just sort of feel bad for them.
Not to play armchair psychologist or anything but as someone with severe OCD, I keep reading posts from antis and the way they talk about things always makes alarm bells go off in my head.
Like
The obsession with making sure everything they like is pure and "morally correct".
The constant reassurance seeking of "I'm a good person, please tell me I'm a good person, I'm not an evil bad person like those nasty proshitters, right?"
The fear that if they read, watch, or even so much as think about something "bad" and "impure" it will taint them or turn them into a monster.
The compulsive checking their followers/friends to make sure they're not one of the badwrong people.
Those are all just textbook symptoms of OCD.
And obviously not every anti has OCD, and I'm not saying people with OCD are evil monsters that will harass/threaten/endanger people like antis do.
But the fact that antis are just reinforcing these symptoms and trying to make other people go along with them is honestly kind of terrifying.
--
Yup. We talk about this often.
They don't necessarily have diagnosis X, as you say, but there are some strong elements of OCD, trauma from certain kinds of religious upbringing, feelings of helplessness and anxiety about the shitty state of the world/sexual violence/etc. being displaced onto something more controllable, and so on and so forth.
Some ringleaders may just be mega assholes looking for victims, but most antis are clearly caught in some kind of anxious spiral that's making them miserable.
A lot of cyberbullying in general would evaporate if everybody had a solid emotional support system, a reasonable standard of living, and access to appropriate and high quality mental health services.
Complete agree.
Shipping fictional characters isnāt representative of your moral values. Itās representative of your particular psychic damage and the themes and motifs that haunt you. Hope this helps.
Anecdotal tales from the battlefield that is twitter.
There was this person who made a thread about how they were being unjustly cancelled and called a pedo by their friend because they had NSFW fic about 16 y/o characters bookmarked. Well, to prove that they weren't a pedo, they showed a screenshot of the bookmark, where they indeed did bookmark it but the comment said "kill yourself for writing pedo fics" (I reported it to AO3, of course).
They were still harassed by antis for having the bookmark in the first place, no matter how disapproving they were of the fic itself and how openly they hated on it, because it was a bookmark, and that meant they carried the stench of sin or however other dramatised version I imagine going on inside their head. Then the antis went digging and found more light smut bookmarked, this time without any disapproving comments. They were gleefully claiming that OP told on themselves and flaying them.
I've never seen a bunch so eager to eat themselves alive over some mildly underage smut that usually has aged up characters. The OP clearly tried to appeal to the antis by engaging in extreme harassment, and they still got hammered to the cross because you just can't win these things.
Don't negotiate with terrorists, folks, and don't turn into a cop to appeal to cops.

When I was a kid, maybe 14 or so (which is, you know, 20+ years ago), I belonged to a Yahoo! mailing list for an anime called Gundam Wing. It was mostly populated by other teens, of varying ages, as it was started by a teen and her friends. Eventually it migrated, when Yahoo! groups started as forums, and even branched off into non-GW related stuff in a second forum.
One of the things I remember the most clearly is the oldest person in the group. Her name was Steelsong. She was a 40-something Dom with a sub whose name we knew even though we knew nothing else. She ran her own fanfic archive because the web was still handmade HTML and navigated in webrings and Iām pretty sure Google didnāt exist or was only barely, barely launched and not well known. She was kind and patient and we loved her. She treated everyone on the group with the respect given any adult, even though most of the rest of the world was still treating us like we were children. Not teenagers even, but children. She never once condescended to any of us, never made our youth a barrier to her respect, never treated us like we were incapable of being full people or like we were less than her because we were young.
I remember that she hosted our fanfiction, as absolutely terrible as it was (and I still have some of it, I am WELL aware of how cringingly terrible it is, just absolute nonsense garbage), right there alongside of other fic that was soul-achingly beautiful. Not a separate section for her friends or for kids, just right there like we were good enough to feature alongside other authors. I never once received crit from her that I didnāt ask for, only support. Only love. I am still writing today partly because Steel was so kind about our fic, fanfic and original.
I remember that when I started doing clay sculpture, she commissioned a tiny pair of dragons from me, to support me doing artwork. She sent a check my mom cashed for me, and my mom helped me mail it when it was finished. It broke in transit, and Steel assured me that she mended it and that it was still beautiful. It was a small gold dragon curled up with a small silver dragon.
I remember that her patience knew no bounds. I remember that she was there for us, regardless of reason. When we wanted to know silly things like what to do with a single AA battery, she answered. When we had serious questions about sex, she answered.Ā When we had questions about writing, she taught us. When one of our group members, a young gay teen in Australia, ended up in the hospital and then stopped making posts, and we all knew what had happened, she let us talk to her about it because we couldnāt go to our own parents, even though we had just lost a friend.
She was not a replacement to my parents, but she was an extra parent, in some ways. A friend, certainly, but someone that had been through more life than we had and was willing to pass on knowledge if we asked for it. Someone older that we trusted with things that were too uncomfortable to go to our parents or teachers or whatever about, because we already knew she wasnāt going to judge us or something, and that we would get an honest answer.
I donāt know why Iām remembering this so hard tonight, and Iām not sure if thereās a point to sharing this, except that I know sheās gone now. She was ill the last time we spoke, and her site went down a long time ago, and I miss her. She was a huge influence on my life, then and now. She was hope, for me, that life as an adult didnāt have to be boring, it wouldnāt have to mean giving up the things I loved and Becoming Only Responsible With No Fun. Her presence meant I had hope I could still write and play with friends even when I wasnāt āa kidā anymore. And sheās gone, and I miss her, and I wanted to share her from the perspective of youth, and the perspective over twenty years later has provided me.
And I think of her, when people go off about older folks being in fandom with younger folks. Iām an older folks now, or at least middle aged folks because there are certainly folks older than me still, but I wasnāt always. Iāve been here since i was a younger folks, and I know how much Steelās presence and support meant to me, how much she helped not just me but everyone on that group. And I think of the people saying older folks donāt belong in fandom, and that they shouldnāt interact with younger folks at all, and I just think⦠I canāt agree. I needed that kind of solid presence in my life back then and even at the age I am now, I need the folks older than me to stay. I want them here.
So I guess, like, if youāre here and youāre 40 or 50 or 60 or 70 or 80 or whatever, I want you here in fandom with me, still. Your presence here is a comfort. It is hope. It is a reminder that life will continue to be fun, even as I get older, myself. And if youāre younger and you have this sort of elder in your groups, I hope that they are like Steel. I hope they are kind and patient and supportive, and that knowing them gives you hope for your own future. I hope in twenty years you look back and remember them fondly.
sorry but i simply cannot take anyone seriously with this argument. being horny is not a crime. acting inappropriately toward another person is a different thing from simply perceiving them in a way that scratches your brain. but you cannot make sexual thought crimes (thot crimes) a thing without it leading down an EXTREMELY homophobic, transphobic path of "the WRONG type of person PERCEIVED ME and I DID NOT CONSENT TO IT." sometimes you will be perceived by people you personally are not attracted to, and i'm sorry, but that alone is not a problem. you do not need consent to find another person attractive. being horny is fine, actually. get over it.
... I'd seriously like to see what happens to these idiots who think you need consent to be horny for someone.
Seriously. Just try walking up to someone and saying "can I find you sexually attractive?"
I'll wait.
maybe this is politically correct to say, but I hate the culture of asking for trigger warnings + tagging. Outside of following site rules, it should not be the responsibility of the author to manage your mental health. Any further trigger warnings given are a niceity, and should not be expected or even demanded.
Trigger warnings are a useful tool for managing PTSD, but it is not the only one. They can click out when things start getting uncomfortable. They can control F or run a script to see if a fic includes words related to their triggers.
Blaming an author for being triggered or squicked by their work is the same as biting into a sandwitch then being upset it has an allergy in it. Like, sure, the author could have listed the ingredients, but unless it was sold for you for profit, it isn't required! You could have asked what was on it, or taken it apart yourself to look. - A person with PTSD

Antis could learn a lot by connecting to their shadow self.
People writing sexual fanfiction about other peopleās intellectual property isnāt something new. Itās not even new to this century.
We literally have fanfiction dating back to the 1700s.
Oh my precious babies, pull up a stool:
Almost the entirety of what we perceive of Arthurian Legend is straight up fanfiction. The first surviving mention of King Arthur is in the 9th centuryĀ Historia Brittonum andĀ places him in the 5th or 6th century BC. MalloryāsĀ Le Morte d'Arthur from which we get basically all modernĀ Arthurian tales, was published in 1485. In the 800 years between those two points there are literally thousands of King Arthur stories that Mallory drew on as inspiration. He literally wrote a fannon anthology.
Hereās the kicker. We have absolutely no origin for the King Arthur Legend. Thereās no concrete historical figure to point to definitively, thereās no original work. There are scattered mentions in history texts and stories told in pubs by drunk bards and thatās it for 800 years of fandom until Mallory bundles all his head canon and A03 Downloads and rolls them all together into one volume.
And itās still going on today. The chances of us ever finding the first record of King Arthur are statistically zero. But weāre still writing fan fiction and making it into movies and TV shows.
Yes, exactly!!
Half the time I'm reading and there's some anti bullshit that comes up I just want to scream "I'M GLORIFYING IT! I'M SEXUALIZING IT! I'M ROMANTICISING IT! I'M PROBLEMATIC-ING IT! What you gonna do about it, block me? Good. Sometimes the trash takes itself out."
And then the other half I just want to read my fic in peace.
