Let's take a moment to appreciate just how amazing the title cards were for Batman the Animated Series.

Oh! I actually know what made these look so iconic!

The backgrounds for the entire series were done on black paper, a first for any animated show. It's Batman, which means everything is at night and incredibly dark. So, the majority of the backgrounds were going to be black anyways and using black paper would cut down on the time it took to create all of the backgrounds. Adding color over the black paper instead of the traditional method gave it a much more stylized look that helped make it iconic.

It also forced some other creative choices, such as using an airbrush to do all of the background art. During the early testing, they found that using an airbrush was easier to apply paint with than a paintbrush and that it looked better. Airbrushing let them be more experimental with painting techniques, such as the spattery fades you can see in the "Bane" and "Deep Freeze" title cards above or the soft, deeply shadowed face on "the Last Laugh." The overall effect of airbrushing on a black background is a much darker, moodier vibe than could be achieved with a traditional approach.

They cared very deeply about the art of the show and how they were going to create it. It wasn't just about the story or the character. In the words of co-creator Eric Radomski: "As opposed to making shows just to sell toys, we've made quality films."

The Old Guard characters as people I met working at Lidl

Because I got the idea and then it would not leave my brain so here it is.

Andy: the person i asked to hold on to the ’till closed sign’ because i needed to go take a break in 2 minutes and they were the last customer on the line at the time, so whenever anyone else tried to join they started arguing with them like ”She needs a break!! You can’t just join this till read the sign!! workers need breaks!” (i love u)

Nile: tired young woman who came to the till to get sensible groceries and a single beer but bc she looked under 30 i had to id her and she didn’t have her id on her. Despite her being clearly over 18 i had to take the beer away and I apologised the whole time, she just sighed and said that she was a cashier so she got it. (I’m so sorry)

Joe by himself: The woman who brought an entire cart full of broccoli because they were on sail for like 20 cents and was so excited about it she was gestured so had she managed to knock my till off and broke the entire machine (I love you broccoli woman)

Nicky by himself: The dude who paid for another customer’s grocery bill because they had forgotten their wallet home

Joe & Nicky together : a very sweet couple who came to the till to buy random stuff that totalled around 10€  but I had logged on to the till with the wrong code so i realised it showed that they owed me 10 grand, and i had no idea how to fix it. Instead of yelling at me they were very nice and joked the whole time that it must have been the protein shakes and that ”didn’t i tell you to those were not good?”. (i love you sweet protein shake couple)

Booker: my manager who did not teach me or my coworker how to clean a specific section of the store properly and said it was fine but then when the inspector came in for a surprise visit, threw us under the buss entirely and joined in with the inspector in telling us off (fuck you forever).  

Quynh: the woman who told me ”daylight is exactly what we need in this hellish darkness!” after i said ”have a nice day” and also the woman who tried to steal caviar.

Lykon: the dude who stepped in to argue when a customer was being rude to me <3

Copley: *smartly dressed dude walks up to the till* ”good evening ” me:” to you as well!” *smug smirk* ”incorrect answer”(then he tried to get a plastic bag without paying)

merrick: my coworker who laughed at me when i said that i was gonna go study art because ”that’s not a career” and they were middle management in lidl

kozak: whoever it was that broke like 10 different jars of baby food on the floor in a blind spot in front of my till and did not tell me so like 5 people had to walk through it and the mess went everywhere before i found out it even existed so i had to get out and scrub it from between the tiles.

Keane: The dude who had returned a bunch of returnable cans (like 30€ worth) but had accidentally pressed the button to give it all to charity and wanted to fight me and my manager about it.
