The South Downs was always for Aziraphale and Crowley. It was a thing for them to have, to be in, a retirement akin to Sherlock Holmes’s. Just longer. And happier.
And this was long before the series happened. It was basically canon. Just waiting to become. It was something the fandom accepted. Expected. Before and after S1. Definitely after S2 and its now senseless 'break up'.
To pull it out from under our feet, having the two silly adorable supernatural, involuntary heroes who were just not doing their jobs, having to sacrifice themselves because suddenly the world they found each other in and loved each other in was no longer good enough…
Nobody asked for this kind of subversion. It makes no sense. It contradicts the themes of the book and previous seasons. In the book they were a part of a random medley of characters with a vague goal. To point out the ridiculousness of many common religious tropes, to point out the ridiculousness of the cold war, of the nuclear threat, of killing the planet we stand on.
What's more, Season 3 severely rolled back Aziraphale and Crowley’s relationship. For what reason I have no idea. To make us accept the ending easier? To appease any criticism an overt romantic relationship between a queer angel and a demon might bring?
Better have a safe enough, harmless middle aged, middle class cis gay couple holding hands. A tick for the representation! Why mess with Crowley’s gender fluidity or Aziraphale’s agenderness? Who even wanted an autistic coded introverted angel and an ADHD demon who would be your worst colleague but climb the corporate ladder with ease?
Nothing wrong with a random gay couple spending a happy retirement together. I hope there will be oodles of them. But I wanted my long suffering angel and his infuriating long black shadow to be safe and happy in an imperfect world.
aziraphale is so brave i don’t even caaaaaaare. he is anxious every single second of s1 and yet he’s still stubbornly voicing his opinion to the archangels and to the metatron. he risks violence! he suffers violence!! sandalphon fucking socks him in the gut, we all saw that shit. but he wants to keep crowley and the world safe so he fights anyways. BRAVE. i don’t care what he or anyone else thinks.
I want you to remember about this official good omens prime post when the finale was days away and it was a part of promo.
It was just... Cruel. Cruel and mocking. They were mocking on us.
Also, please do not listen to how people talk about cover letters on this site. Cover letters are important, and in many industries you can be damn sure they'll be read. And no, they're not 'fanfic about working in your office', or just re-stating the resume contents in a fancier guise. If you treat them like that, then of course they're not doing much for you. That makes you sound like a syncophantic windbag, and it's not doing anything else to help.
I was trained in the dark arts of the cover letter by my mother, who is a hiring manager. And her training has paid off: I've been consistently told my cover letters are excellent. Let me pass on the wisdom.
The job of a cover letter is to give a prospective employer strictly more information than is on the resume. This is where you take the resume contents and put them into context. You look at the job requirements (you are looking at the job requirements before applying, right?) and look at your resume and ask the question (in your head) "why would a person think this candidate would be good for this job?" and your cover letter is the answer to that question. If you don't answer that question, the hiring manager is going to have to do it themselves, and you have way more information to work with than they do.
This is especially important if you're moving from one industry to another, because then the relevant connections aren't obvious. It's also very important if you're overqualified, because then you can use the letter to say "I know it looks like this job would be too entry-level for me, but I'm interested to pursue it for reasons x, y, and z". You can also use this space to explain away something that might otherwise be disqualifying, like job-hopping or a long break in employment. The tone to strike here is always matter-of-fact and constrained to topic - don't go into detail about health stuff or personal tragedy, just tell them what they need to hear: that this period of your resume was affected by [bad thing] but that it's now in the past and you're looking forward to the next chapter. Remember, one of the things they're trying to learn is whether you'd be content in this role, or whether you'd be miserable and leave after 2 months, which would force them to do all the work of hiring again. You're trying to establish that you will fit right in and not cause problems. Knowing what drew you to this job in particular (and don't just say 'money', that's true for everyone) helps with that.
And the other mistake? Everyone writes cover letters that are too long. One page is fine. Two is the absolute maximum, and that's if you have a lot of specific things to say. It's a waste of your time and theirs to pad it out with fluff. Of my two most recent successful cover letters (i.e. jobs for which I was interviewed) one was 390 words and the other was 550. That's the length of this post. How long did it take me to write this post? About 15 minutes to write, 5 to proof and edit. That's how long you should be spending on a cover letter, maximum.
Addendum: the LLM thing.
Yes, a lot of hiring managers now will get an LLM to 'read' cover letters and flag the interesting ones. This is especially true in Big Corporate contexts. You still benefit from writing a non-generic cover letter. This is for two reasons. First, more unique wording and content - that is, the kind of content that comes from actually answering the question - will show up in the LLM summary of your letter too. And second, employers who use LLMs do so as a primary screen, and then actually read the letters that pass it. So, if you're good, someone is still going to actually read that letter. I know it feels gross, but you just have to put the LLM out of your mind and write as if your primary audience is still a person. Because it still is!
#as someone who has never been actual HR but has done application review + interviews at several jobs for many many different positions#if youre applying for an IT job dont talk about foucault for three pages single spaced#anyway you can do everything right and still not through. do not despair over your own person. despair over the arbitrary etc systems (tags via @fizzybelts)
I... I have to know more about this cover letter. Please tell me about the Foucault IT cover letter.
Today Crowley felt the ground shift almost violently under his feet when he walked in on Aziraphale diligently explaining the finer points of feline development in utero to Mrs. H, diagrams and all.
Standing there poleaxed, he felt… Happy? Content? Like the most obscenely lucky being on and off Earth?
All of the above, he supposed. And wasn’t that a Thing.
Today Aziraphale walked into their kitchen to see Crowley carefully mending a few stretched and broken stitches in his favorite coat.
She blushed when she noticed his regard, but accepted his thank you kiss and serenely returned to her angel caretaking task.
Aziraphale’s day today began with a fret and ended with a cuddle.
He’d been Planning, you see, for the arrival of Mrs. H’s precious cargo. Making lists upon lists: supplies for the big event, local veterinary resources, protocol in case of various emergencies…
He was doing fairly well managing his fear when long, slender fingers slowly moved a cup of cocoa into his field of vision. The combined aroma of chocolate, heavy whipped cream, marshmallows, and nutmeg proved to be an instant balm to fraying nerves.
Crowley pointed out that a miracle to remove the whole painful-and-dangerous-birth aspect of original sin couldn’t require too much more than 25 Lazarii.
“Well, we’ve decided that we’re only on Our Side now, and that Our Side includes happily ever after as a non-negotiable feature. And she’s ours. Surely that means she gets it too.”
Aziraphale’s first instinct had been driven by a long held practice of doubting and denying himself. It didn’t take him too long, however, to decide instead that he had thousands of years of ‘selfish’ miracles forgone. And there was nothing to stop him making use of them now.
So the miracles were cast. Once her little kittens were ready, they and Mrs. H would have a pain-free, quick and easy delivery. Her ‘reproductive bits’ (Crowley’s words) would gently bow out, as would the kittens’ once they reached the appropriate age. They would all live healthy, happy lives in which they miraculously preferred to stay on cottage grounds while any dangerous wildlife found themselves warded firmly away.
And now, Aziraphale was going to lean a little more into selfishness as part of their happily ever after.
“Thank you, Dear. Now I think, to settle my nerves, I’d like some time as the little spoon.”
Very sweet, but they're going to wind up with SO MANY CATS if none of them get fixed.
Today Crowley didn’t think she was receiving near enough attention from her Husband, so she donned one of his blue button down shirts and casually strolled past his line of sight.
Temptation accomplished.

Hi there!!
I saw on one of your recent posts you were asking for ideas… absolutely no pressure of course but I was wondering if you’d consider drawing a follow up to this one? https://www.tumblr.com/skippysy/818066997607825408/emotional-support-angel I remember it pulling at my heart strings in all the best ways when you first posted it… all I could think was that Crowley really really needed a hug!
Either way, thanks so much for sharing your amazing art! It’s always a treat to see when you’ve made a new post… your work always oozes so much emotion!
