Anonymous asked: dear sally, I fell in love with a boy, and he fell in love with me, and then it fell apart in such a sad way. I still have this huge amount of love for him in my heart but I don’t know how to be friends with someone I thought I’d love for a really really long time… do you think being friends with someone you love to a vaguely unbearable extent is viable? I’m scared to think I’d lose someone simply because it’s hard… he’s really special, we just didn’t work the way we wanted to, in the end.

HEYY! I just put something together for SPX! This is mah little Mamuana zine adventure- nothing serious, but pretty much my first extended comic. Cool! Oh, I know I have it better than a lot of would-be comics buyers, and that’s what worries me. I’ve had it with the self-appointed gatekeepers in comics.

I went from casually to hardcore into comics largely because I had an awesome LCS when I was in college, with an owner and staff for whom it was a priority to make their shop accessible and welcoming, particularly to people who didn’t see themselves as the target audience. That shop—The Sword and the Grail, in Asheville, NC—no longer exists, but it remains my high bar for comics retailers.

This kind of gatekeeping isn’t just shitty, it’s incredibly bad business, and it blows my mind that more shop owners don’t realize that—or don’t care.

Jackie Ormes (August 1, 1911 – December 26, 1985) is known as the first African American female cartoonist. Her strips, featuring the lovable characters Torchy Brown, Candy, Patty-Jo, and Ginger, appeared in the Chicago Defender and Pittsburgh Courier in the 1930s - 1950s. 

Jackie Ormes said, “No more…Sambos…Just KIDS!” and she transformed her attractive, spunky Patty-Jo cartoon character into the first upscale American black doll. At long last, here was an African American doll with all the play features children desired: playable hair, and the finest and most extensive wardrobe on the market, with all manner of dresses, formals, shoes, hats, nightgowns, robes, skating and cowgirl costumes, and spring and winter coat sets, to name a few. Edie Fake featured on Grahm Kolbeins’ Rad Queers doc series!

Edie is one of my favorite people AND one of my favorite artists. Two in one!

I highly recommend Edie’s beautiful and enchanting book Gaylord Pheonix, (2010, Secret Acres), it’s dream-journey narrative of body exploration through self dialogue and fascinating strangers met along the way, depicted without panels in a style that mutates, resembling early tattoo arts, textile patterns and illuminated manuscripts, shifting from minimal to elaborate, worth re-reads and subsequent page flipping image gazing.
