Just swapped out the filters on our 1st Corsi-Rosenthal cube, and what a difference! Dusty old filter above, minty fresh one below.

This particular filter box spent 10+ months on low inside our house, catching tons of wildfire smoke, PM2.5, and COVID-19 aerosols, as well as pollen, dust, and mold. Glad all that's on THERE and not in our lungs!

I highly recommend building your own CR box for your home, school, work, mutual aid meet ups, etc. All you need is 4 MERV-13 filters (sold at most hardware stores), a 20" box fan, scissors, cardboard, and duct tape.

A new one costs about $75-100 - much cheaper and performs a lot better than a lot of fancy air purifiers. Building it with 2 people takes about an hour (mostly to measure and cut out the weird shroud thing), and swapping in new filters is much faster.

Sharing this today because wildfire smoke is full of all kinds of dangerous particles from burned up buildings, cars, etc. But DIY filter fans like mine, air purifiers, and disposable respirator masks like KN95/N95s protect your lungs by snatching 95%+ of those particles out of the air.

If you're in a smoke zone, stay inside with air cleaning devices as much as you can and wear a respirator outside! People close to the fires should seek out reusable silicone/plastic respirator masks with filter cartridges that trap particles AND vapors (the same kinds that work for tear gas).

just found out today i have covid for the first time (as far as i’m aware etc, i worked grocery ‘19-‘23 so prior asymptomatic infection is likely). the lack of easy to find, science-backed info on what to do for covid infections in 2026 is INFURIATING. i’ve spent the last few hours just trying to figure out if paxlovid is worth it, and if so if i can even access it or afford it now that it’s no longer free in the US 😭 sending you love & solidarity, i’ve been horrified by the way we’ve handled the pandemic this whole time but today has really spiked my anger around it

Eeek, I'm so sorry about the COVID :( it is such a pain to try and navigate getting treatment now that they've paywalled it. Maybe some followers will be aware of best practices for lowering your chances of long term impact... anyone out there have info about that? I've read a few things about how important rest/not pushing yourself at all during the initial infection can be to preventing development of long COVID/worsening long COVID symptoms but I don't know much else.

Start taking a daily antihistamine, it can help. Neti pot saline nasal rinse twice a day (please twice boil water and let it cool before using it inside your nose) this can help reduce the viral load in your sinuses if it's present there. Also gargling the same kind of rinse for reducing load in your throat. If you are the type to be sick for longer than others it's worth trying to get paxlovid, although current research is showing it's not as effective as it was previously in 2024 (bc of new mutations).

The biggest thing to help you avoid getting Long COVID is 1) try to access metformin if you can, it reduces your chances of LC by 50% (doesn't do anything if you already have LC tho) 2) practice radical rest for at least a month post acute phase. And please take it super seriously. Absolutely no cardio or anything that makes your heart rate high for a long time. No exercise, no weight lifting, no running.

Treat your body like as if you already have MECFS and rest more than you think is necessary. This is the biggest factor that can determine if you end up with LC or not.

People always have a lot to say about caregiver fatigue, but no one gives a shit about the shame of being taken care of. I think it's even heavier than caregiving. As a caregiver, you can always take a break. But when you're on the other side, the shame never ends.

Help Thomaserena support multiple Sudanese families and a community kitchen

Thomaserena has been organizing to help several Sudanese families, some who have relocated to Egypt and others that remain in Sudan. In addition to these families, he is also helping a community kitchen afford their operating costs so they can continue to serve displaced families with no where else to turn for meals, clean water, and shelter.

The monthly goals are 72k on gfm for the families and 28k on chuffed for the kitchen.

The operating cost of the kitchen continues to increase due to rising inflation and the ongoing water shortage. Thomaserena unfortunately had to dig himself deeper into dept last month to help the kitchen afford water tankers after donations were not enough to cover the costs. The press has a collection of beautiful riso and letterpress zines and prints by Palestinians living in Gaza that deserves support too.

reminder to all disabled people that you’re allowed to tell people “i can’t do that” about stuff you can ‘technically’ do but which harms you or requires a period of recovery or preparatory rest etc. you don’t have to explain the complex nuances of your condition to anybody who demands it. i’ve found it’s honestly better to give the least amount of info about your symptoms unless you trust a person a lot. you hold the power over your health information. you choose whether or not to share the details of your condition with people who might not understand.
