we do not need midnight sun. we need a twilight book from robert pattinson's pov
girls want this
Bella Swan should've questioned her choice to become a vampire in Eclipse
on the surface, yes, this is the I Was Born to Be a Vampire saga. yet here we are, book 3, standing at the precipice with Bella as she makes The Choice one final time. beyond the war with Victoria, Edward and Jacob externalize the fight Bella is having with herself: the choice between humanity and vampirism. literally and metaphorically, it's do-or-die o' clock for Bella. time to choose.
Bella is an avoidant, unreliable narrator, so she doesn't really engage in that question. cool. we love a Holden Caufield. however, the downfall of this book (& consequently, the series), is that the author is also unwilling to seriously engage these questions meaningfully.
character development largely happens off-screen. the asking, digging, and answering of pivotal questions are not shown to the reader. as a result, the emotional beats feel off & hollow.
look to Bella as an example. in chapter 12, her upcoming graduation (a milestone she previously cared nothing about) has her realizing she isn't ready to become a vampire. she never thought about the prospect of saying goodbye until now. she's about to leave everything. she's scared.
great! what an excellent time in the series to weigh her options. what would it mean to be a vampire and leave your life behind? what would it mean to remain human and navigate a relationship with your vampire bf? why is humanity so wonderful? what are the drawbacks of vampirism? what makes vampirism worth it?
listen: it Does Not Matter that Bella "always wanted to be a vampire." questioning her choice is necessary. why? having her think through this decision ultimately emphasizes her reasons for choosing vampirism. it gives her choice more weight, & in turn, strengthens all the themes we see up until this point. it solidifies the series' message.
but we never see her come back to this question. we never see her grapple with what eternal life would mean, or what it would mean to choose humanity. we never see her voice her concerns to any other character (until after the battle).
suddenly, in chapter 20, she realizes she is ready. but we don't get to see that change of heart. after all the desire she expressed to be a vampire, & the drama of the stomach-sinking flash of doubt in the eleventh hour, it's the "guilt and anguish" she felt watching the Cullens and wolves practice that makes her "ready." it's the fact that she's "a liability" and desires to "be partners" with Edward. (implying she's not now? girl, yikes)
in the critical moment of her most consequential choice, her decision boils down to feelings of guilt, anguish, & inadequacy, told to us after the fact. these feelings seem to be a byproduct of love...but notably, there is no mention of love factoring into her decision.
does a reader need to know every thought a character has? no. but when the climax of a series' arc revolves around a character making a very personal choice, one would expect to see more discussion on the pros/cons of becoming a vamp vs staying human. for me, the rigid focus on plot at the expense of character development was Eclipse's biggest downfall, and a contributing factor to why Breaking Dawn also feels as hollow as it does.
Thinking about that theory where Bella daydreams/dreams the supernatural aspects of Twilight and I'm starting to see the interpretation in all it's psychological thriller/tragedy it is.
-She shows up to Forks, she's moving in with her dad in a climate she doesn't really like.
-She finds out about Edward Cullen and they're both mutually wondering why they just keep like. Staring at each other. Turns out he's just some Mormon guy or maybe she's also lowkey a bit obsessed with him and he has to turn her down or tries to avoid her or tells her they're moving in New Moon so she has to like, Pretend he doesn't exist.
-That theory pointed out something I always wondered in the movies, why the stunt of her rolling down stairs happened, and the fire from the last scene? Edward is there so maybe he is just a douchebag boyfriend since he's kinda mean to her when he's not an obsessive vampire.
- the ballarina studio is drawn pretty much like the vision and matches the scene she was just in, but no one but Jake later comments on her bite (Even tho like idk maybe like people assume she does weird shit with Edward)
-she also has head trauma a lot, and all the Cullen gaslighting could be the actual events, edward could have been right there to stop the van and she hit her head, she hits her head on the bike one of few times she sees hallucination! Edward
-i always wondered why he was a strong hallucination she only ever had when her life was in danger
-did she eat alone or imagine it post alley attempt with the gaggle of guys? Did she conflate the rescue in her head?
- im jumping around a lot but these events make it make sense why eclipse/breaking down feel like such an odd dream sequence blur...
-Bella's relationship to dreams in the story
-jake stating "maybe if she turned she could say she was in a car accident... She jumped off a cliff" there was even a vivid sequence of charlie seeing her in her casket
-this whole franchise is based on a dream, there is so many times dreams fit into the narrative as stated above, also? Cliff sides and water is a prevalent feature since where they are located
-but also where she jumps, if jake also fits into her self written fabrication where would he be? Would he still be there in time to save her? The theory i saw suggested that everything after that point was a sequence of her fantasy life flashing before her eyes before she passes
-the cliffside jump during their honeymoon with song lyrics featuring "only a dream..."
Im not sure how much i agree with that interpretation of her dying at la push... Would that be where it ends? Is that where everything fills in on its own?
Also a lot like the ballerina imagery and the fire on screen (which i think in of itself is stronger and more interesting) the romeo and juliet cover likely fills in the Italy trip she speedily took in those moments before everything else
Even the last moments of the book feel like that, the style of the war before that vision cuts and it never happened, feel like dream sequences or brief cuts...
I dunno that's the movie overview, i wonder at what points it'd be fun to speculate her unreliablity in the books given this interpretation! Its be fun and make it interesting and reintroduce it into another genre perspective

I was just checking in on the status of the Quileute tribe's Move to Higher Ground (MTHG) project!
Phase 1, the construction of a new school outside of the tsunami zone, has been completed.
"Our priority was the relocation of the Quileute Tribal School (QTS). Formerly located on a deserted US Coast Guard site, QTS was a few feet above sea level at the Quillayute River estuary, within the Pacific Ocean tsunami inundation zone. On August 5, 2022, the Quileute Tribe celebrated the completion of its newly constructed school on the designated MTHG relocation zone, beyond the threat from tsunamis. The new facility includes a full-size gymnasium with high school regulation sized basketball and volleyball courts, computer and technical skills labs, science laboratories with lockable chemical preparation rooms, a fully equipped woodshop, state of the art technology to enhance student learning, and an upper school lounge where the older students can gather to collaborate, study, or relax during free time. With Phase 1 completed, the Tribe is now working to establish the next phase of the project."
Following Phase 1, the project leads completed a survey to identify priorities for continued housing development needs and is in a planning phase for the next stage of the project.
If you'd like to join me in contributing to help with the next steps of the project (or just learn more), you can do so at https://mthg.org/

y’all act like edward would be upset if bella rear ended his volvo when really his reaction would be 😍😍😍
Edward's thoughts in order:
omg is she okay? my fragile human, as lovely and delicate as a rose petal???
oh how i wish i could simply read her mind instead of stooping to these exasperating humans means of communication!
she's fine. she's furious at me. she's so cute when she's furious.
does this mean she likes me? she certainly thinks about me... (return to thought #2)
i should let her rear end every one of my cars if it brings her joy. small pittance to pay for the crime of loving her.
i love her so much.
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON 2009, dir. Chris Weitz
fandom will discuss whether Bella should've struggled with her mental illness after New Moon but frame it as this, like, device to punish Edward. which sorta hits on the right idea but frames it the wrong way. this isn't a "don't let my boy suffer" post bc the little freaks in my vampire book should all suffer. but. having Bella & Edward support each other through the worst time of their lives sounds like a beautiful opportunity to reset their dynamic. they come to the table as partners, share their pain, take accountability for their shortcomings, & figure out how to cultivate a deeper intimacy that allows them to move forward. Eclipse could have been about how to navigate an adult relationship after your whirlwind romance falls apart. instead, it's...this. & instead of discussing what needed to happen after New Moon to create this compelling love story, people frame the "should Edward have to confront Bella's depression" question as "should he or should he not be punished." maybe this isn't about inflicting retribution. maybe it's just about growing up. maybe childhood really is the kingdom where nobody dies.
She really just,., said that to him
bella is bland character WHERE??!! bella is a boring protagonist WHO??!!?!
we're lucky smeyer didn't write Twilight in the late 2000s. the psychic damage we would've taken from Scene Kid Edward Cullen is incalcuable
