"I'm not afraid of you."
"Then youāre as inept as Lieutenant Ronin told me," Adam looked at the human, "if you value your life, youād be smart enough to be afraid of me."
Adam was so invested in pushing the cane back that when it stopped resisting, he didnāt have time to react before his own strength sent him stumbling forward. The frustration of falling for such a cheap trick was mitigated by the knowledge that he had probably just broken the humanās arm. Growling, he whirled around once again and discharged a shot from Blush at one of Romanās legs. With an arm out of commission, injuring the leg would seal the fight in his favor.
This time, Roman saw the shot coming. He weakly flickered on any Aura he could muster and winced when the shot still sent him a foot back and into the wall. Shit, he thought, backed up and no way out.
His vision blurred; that was it, the blood loss and the injuries would kill him at this point if he didnāt slow down.
Roman dropped his cane and held up both hands, āFINE.ā
"Good," Adam spat, "filth like you needs to remember its place. I said it before and I'll say it again - talk to me the way you've been talking to my subordinates again, and I'll kill you. You forget your place too often, human. Maybe this will help you remember it."
"I'm not afraid of you."
"Then youāre as inept as Lieutenant Ronin told me," Adam looked at the human, "if you value your life, youād be smart enough to be afraid of me."
He reacted quickly to the strike, blocking the curved end with Wiltās blade. He could feel Roman putting a lot of weight behind the strike - even his own strength couldnāt hold it off for too long.Ā And shooting him at this range would hurt my own arm on the recoil⦠for all your stupidity, youĀ areĀ smarter in combat than I thought.Ā Too badā¦
He tightened his grip on Blush and swung the butt end of the rifle-sheath towards the arm holding the cane.Ā ThereĀ isĀ an advantage to wielding two weapons. Too bad that didnāt occur to himā¦
Adamās swing wasĀ fast. Roman didnāt even realize what had happened, let alone had time to evenĀ attemptĀ to turn on his Aura before his humerus virtually broke in two.
This time he couldnāt help but curse.
He still had a firm grip on Melodic Cudgel; as a last ditch effort he pulled forward. A cheap, weak move⦠but at least it might do something.
Adam was so invested in pushing the cane back that when it stopped resisting, he didn't have time to react before his own strength sent him stumbling forward. The frustration of falling for such a cheap trick was mitigated by the knowledge that he had probably just broken the human's arm. Growling, he whirled around once again and discharged a shot from Blush at one of Roman's legs. With an arm out of commission, injuring the leg would seal the fight in his favor.
"I'm not afraid of you."
"Then youāre as inept as Lieutenant Ronin told me," Adam looked at the human, "if you value your life, youād be smart enough to be afraid of me."
Adam was barely able to flare up his Aura before the explosive detonated on his leg. As it was, he was sent skidding backward, dragging Wilt along the ground to slow himself down.
He whirled around, pointing the end of Blush at Roman and fired several shots from the weapon, aimed at Romanās shoulders and legs. Crippling him was his aim - he wouldnāt kill the pissant unless he felt there was no other option. A corpse couldnāt grovel in the dirt, after all.
Roman wasnāt as skilled at Aura as, well, just about anyone he had ever encountered. Therefore, when the gun shot at his arms and legs he had stopped the blasts only enough to feel two parts in his forearm crack and something in his right leg burst. He gritted his teeth; heĀ wouldnāt give this guy the satisfaction of any signs of pain. It didnāt help, though, that now he had to stay in place and he wasĀ still losing blood.
The most he could do now was parry and block if Adam decided to switch to melee. He flipped his cane and swung to strike Adam in the face with the heavier, curved end.

The smile disappeared, replaced by a concerned look. āBlakeā¦ā he gently rested a hand on his studentās shoulder, āI think I understand. Youāve grown so used to being looked down on and being pushed around, that this - this new idea of taking whatās ours - is foreign. The very sensation of showing humans the same thing theyāve shown us is unfamiliar⦠is it even frightening for you?ā He hated seeing her like this. The mere fact that they were winning was doing more harm than good for her, ālet me help, Blake. What can I do to help that sensation stop being frightening?ā
The concern was familiar, comforting, as was the hand on her shoulder. She held onto the comfort it provided her and silently indexed it as evidence that maybe she was wrongāthat Adam was still the person sheād always known, that the important parts of him hadnāt changed. His words weakened her surety about her own, made her feel as though maybe her worries were unfounded; he wasnāt wrong, after all, was he? She was scared of the things they were doing. Did that make the rest of it true, as well? Blake shook her head slightly.
"When you say it like that, you make me sound childish. And⦠weak, and like Iām so used to human tyranny that Iām more comfortable with it than with our strength. Iām not." It was so tempting to simply let his words reassure her⦠āBut I just worry aboutāthe way weāve become what the humans think we are. Killing, fighting, attackingāthey want to see us as monsters; is becoming monsters really the right choice?ā Blake saw why they were doing what they were doing. Everything that sheād ever seen happening to herself, her fellow faunus, all the pain and suffering and mistreatment, peaceful protests gone ignored, or worse, attacked flashed through her mind. She understood every event that had driven the White Fang to this. She understood the rage that came from being treated like this.
"The humans deserve this," she said with conviction. She knew it in her heart, her gut, her head; every fiber of her being knew that they deserved every bit of pain that could be turned back in them after what theyād done to faunus for so long. "But do we? ā¦If you want me to be lessā¦" She wouldnāt say frightened. "Troubled, then find a correct answer to that. Because, Adam, I donāt know if I can."
"I'm sorry, I never meant to imply you were weak," Adam's tone was uncharacteristically soft, "it may not be the right choice, Blake. But we tried what most would call the 'right choice.' And it got us nowhere. The humans only saw it as more reason to walk on us. What we're doing now isn't the 'right choice' but it'sĀ the only choice that will let us succeed. The humans gave us no other choice. And we're going to show them how much of a mistake that was."
commander-taurus:
"I know Iām not the same. IāmĀ stronger now. And so are you.ā A small smile appeared on his face, āweāve both gotten stronger ever sinceĀ he took over. Itās thanks to him that we have the strength to take whatās ours from the humans. WeāreĀ winning, Blake.ā
She didnāt look altogether convinced. The fact that he thought the change was a good thing, that he had the self-awareness to know it had happened in the first place was reassuring on some level, but⦠something rang false at the insistence that it was strength. Couldnāt he feel that, too? āMaybe we are winning, maybe weāre stronger, but whatās the cost? I donāt⦠I donāt even feel like Iām me anymore when we get back from missions. And youāreāIām just, Iām not sure this is good for us. For any of us.ā
The smile disappeared, replaced by a concerned look. "Blake..." he gently rested a hand on his student's shoulder, "I think I understand. You've grown so used to being looked down on and being pushed around, that this - this new idea of taking what's ours - is foreign. The very sensation of showing humans the same thing they've shown us is unfamiliar... is it even frightening for you?" He hated seeing her like this. The mere fact that they were winning was doing more harm than good for her, "let me help, Blake. What can I do to help that sensation stop being frightening?"
"I'm not afraid of you."
"Then youāre as inept as Lieutenant Ronin told me," Adam looked at the human, "if you value your life, youād be smart enough to be afraid of me."
"Donāt walk away from me,Ā human!" Adam snarled, lunging forward once again. When he jabbed his sword forward, he was aiming for Romanās shoulder. No, he wouldnāt kill him. But he needed to put this worm in his place.
After all, thereĀ was something that set him apart from Faunus such as Private Perry and Lieutenant Ronin - he was stronger than any of them. And Torchwick had failed to see this at his own peril.
Roman felt time slow down to microseconds to the point where he could feel when Adamās sword came a hairās width from his shoulder blade. He rolled off to the side, the sword cutting the side of his arm. It was deep, an his jacket was stained, but he still had his limb attached⦠more or less. He stuck out his Cudgel and fired straight at Adamās leg.Ā Screw decency at this point, he thought,Ā but shit, that blade could keep you bleeding pretty bad.
āYou really wanna tango, Grease Lightning? Fine by me!ā
Adam was barely able to flare up his Aura before the explosive detonated on his leg. As it was, he was sent skidding backward, dragging Wilt along the ground to slow himself down.
He whirled around, pointing the end of Blush at Roman and fired several shots from the weapon, aimed at Roman's shoulders and legs. Crippling him was his aim - he wouldn't kill the pissant unless he felt there was no other option. A corpse couldn't grovel in the dirt, after all.
"I'm not afraid of you."
"Then youāre as inept as Lieutenant Ronin told me," Adam looked at the human, "if you value your life, youād be smart enough to be afraid of me."
"Oh, I know Cinder would chastise me. But hereās somethingĀ elseĀ I know,Ā human: youāre replaceable. If you die thereās a hundred other wannabe crime lords scuttling in the slums of Vale. Cinder could find someone smarter and stronger than you were in under an hour. So as I said earlier - youād be smart to be afraid of me.ā
Roman frowned, āNow, arenāt you a little old to be playing the part of the playground bully? Sure, Commander Taurus, youāve got a neat little sword and a Semblance that comes in handy 95% of the time⦠but your temper⦠tssss; ooooh~ how do you do it without looking like a frustrated teenager?
"Let me guess⦠Parents gone? Lived in the White Fang your whole life? Have enough pent-up fury to take out a cityās worth of humans and not feel bad? ā¦So does half of the White Fang. Trust me when I say, youāre not a special snowflake, either.Ā
"New deal; we both stay off each otherās backs. Iāll do my part in this madhouse, and you do⦠you know,Ā yours. Maybe weāll get this all done quickly and you can turn that frown upside down for a minute.ā
Roman breathed through his nose and turned on his heels, āWho knows. Maybe Iāll send you a muffin basket.ā
"Don't walk away from me,Ā human!" Adam snarled, lunging forward once again. When he jabbed his sword forward, he was aiming for Roman's shoulder. No, he wouldn't kill him. But he needed to put this worm in his place.
After all, thereĀ was something that set him apart from Faunus such as Private Perry and Lieutenant Ronin - he was stronger than any of them. And Torchwick had failed to see this at his own peril.
"I'm not afraid of you."
"Then youāre as inept as Lieutenant Ronin told me," Adam looked at the human, "if you value your life, youād be smart enough to be afraid of me."
Adam shot forward, drawing Wilt faster than Romanās eye could even follow. In an instant, the blade was inches from Romanās neck.
"First, Iāve heard from Ronin that you were beaten into unconsciousness by that ālittle girl.ā Second, she did not āget the best of meā, she fled before I could do anything to stop her. Thirdā¦" the lines on his mask started glowing, "talk to me that way again and the feather in your hat will be the only sign you ever existed on Remnant."
Roman held up both hands and chucked, āWhoa, whoa. Take it easy, Grease Lightning. If you really want to dance, you better be prepared to get an ear-full from Cinderā¦ā
He raised an eyebrow, āAnd trust me⦠If I were you, Iād keep onĀ herĀ good side.ā
"I'm not afraid of you."
"Then youāre as inept as Lieutenant Ronin told me," Adam looked at the human, "if you value your life, youād be smart enough to be afraid of me."
Roman put on a smug grin and swung his cane over his shoulder, āOoooh, scary words from the man who let a little girl get the best of him and run off with all of the White Fangās secrets.ā
Adam shot forward, drawing Wilt faster than Roman's eye could even follow. In an instant, the blade was inches from Roman's neck.
"First, I've heard from Ronin that you were beaten into unconsciousness by that 'little girl.' Second, she did not 'get the best of me', she fled before I could do anything to stop her. Third..." the lines on his mask started glowing, "talk to me that way again and the feather in your hat will be the only sign you ever existed on Remnant."
"I'm not afraid of you."
"Then you're as inept as Lieutenant Ronin told me," Adam looked at the human, "if you value your life, you'd be smart enough to be afraid of me."
"I'm afraid⦠afraid of what all of this is doing to you."
"Why?" Adam turned to look at his student, "Iām not hurt by any of this, Blake. Every night I rest easy knowing weāre going to be making a new world for Faunus."
Shifting from foot to foot, Blake eyed her mentor with mild unease. āBecauseā¦ā She wasnāt sure she could put words to it, but there had been a change in him in the years since the White Fang had turned violent. Heād always been angry and sheād always trusted his judgment despite that, but since the change he seemed⦠volatile. Almost cruel, sometimes. āYouāre different. Youāre not⦠youāre not the same way you were when we met.ā
"I know I'm not the same. I'mĀ stronger now. And so are you." A small smile appeared on his face, "we've both gotten stronger ever sinceĀ he took over. It's thanks to him that we have the strength to take what's ours from the humans. We'reĀ winning, Blake."
