COMMSOC Adventure Awaits
Watch out as we unveil another fun and exciting adventure! :) Let’s travel together. :)
Student Media Congress 2015
Last October 16 and 17, students, trainees, and professionals from different schools and institutions around the country have gathered in DLSU to participate in a two-day event consisting of seminars and workshops, spearheaded by invited professionals from the different fields. Student Media Congress, with its theme: Experiencing Media Dynamics, invited 70 known media experts in the industry and offered 69 talks and workshops which included different media categories.
On its first day, four media experts gave their respective talks about their field expertise. The invited speakers were Pia Hontiveros ot CNN, Alexandra Priet-Romualdez of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Dennis Lim of the Digital Media Services at ABS-CBN, Merlee Jayme of DM9, and was Reynaldo “Ka Rene” Sta. Cruz of DZBB. Each of them provided a peek into the industry as they shared their experiences and projects, giving the audience a brief look about what they are to face.
To end the first half of the day, Anna Loraine Centeno, director of the DLSU Student Media office, presented the Student Media Congress summation and gave thanks to the 1,208 delegates from 75 schools, colleges, universities from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Delegates who have chosen competing workshops such as News Writing, Feature Writing, Sports Writing, Editorial/Opinion Writing, Creative Writing, Pagsulat ng Lathalain, Photojournalism, Magazine Layout, and Conceptual Photography will continue on with their seminars. Each workshop has speakers and the announcements of the winners for each event are to be announced and awarded on the closing ceremony of the second day of event.
SMC’s second day brings a multitude of seminars and workshops—both interactive and hands-on. Delegates walk around the DLSU campus in search for the assigned rooms and/or auditoriums. Among the non-competing workshops were Television Production with Cathy Garcia-Molina, The Secret Weapon for Breaking News and Reporting with Mike Enriquez, Calligraphy Design with Abbey Sy, Videography with Dan Villegas, and many more.
Cinema One Originals
Almost everyone is familiar with how mainstream movies go. They plots are mostly about love, corruption, comedy, action or horror. People watch it because they could easily relate and understand the films.
What if we decide to show indie films? Will people like it?
The answer to that question is a yes!
Last October 5-6, Cinema One, with partnership with the DLSU-D Communication and Media Society (COMMSOC), they held the Cinema One Originals: Kakaiba ka ba? at Tanghalang Julian Felipe, (TJF). They showed award-winning indie films from the previous contests that were held in the past years.
TJF was filled with various students from various colleges all from the university. Everyone anticipated in watching the films that were made by indie film directors.
The Words Left Unspoken
Spoken poetry has been a thing nowadays. COMMSOC came up with an idea to help spread the word about it. We have decided to invite Words Anonymous to perform their poetry masterpieces in front of the massive crowds of DLSU-D, so they will be able to make it go viral and be inspired to do one.
As a part of the students’ week, we have organised The Words Left Unspoken which was held last September 30 at the Alumni Auditorium. Everyone was invited even outsiders.
Predicting that loads of people will come, we have decided to put all the money we receive as payment to our beneficiary, One La Salle Scholarship, to be able to help the scholars of the university.
We held auditions for the open mic. We were ecstatic when there were at least ten people who decided to audition. In the end, we chose three.
Alex Barbadillo, “Nasaan”
Rens Doctor, “Sinusulat Lang Kita”
Kathlyn De Vera, “Patawad”
We were fortunate to invite three of the speakers from Words Anonymous to perform.

The event ended well. The Alumni Auditorium was jam-packed and people from various courses, year levels, and, even, schools and universities went to witness the talent this group has to offer.
COMMSOC Body Orientation
Finally! The officers and the members are able to meet the members! We organised the body orientation for the members to get to know what the organisation’s mission, vision, and plan of activities are. We also formally introduced ourselves to the members last August 5 at CIH 311.
The members also chose what team they would be in to hone their skills and talents.
There were three teams. These teams were facilitated by the team leaders they decided to choose. as the members were choosing their teams, they were asked to form a circle to meet their other members and were introduced to the officers who were going to assist them in their team leader task.
Creative Designs Team led by Bryan Baybay, Vice President for Internal Affairs, and Patricia Anne Cimacio, Vice President for Marketing

Doing the Write Thing: Content and Layout for Magazine
The Print magazine business is still blooming despite it’s competitions. With this, COMMSOC decided to invite speakers who are considered as professional in this field of media.
Last August 19, the Tanghalang Julian Felipe (TJF) was jam-packed with students who all gathered to be able to hear the note-worthy talks from Mr. Don Jaucian, Rogue Magazine, and Ms. Elaine Carag, Chalk Magazine.
The talks were about the editorial style of the speakers. Both of them have distinct style in writing with regards to the magazines they work for. They also shared a few do’s and font’s when it comes to writing.
Here are some stills from the event:
Meet the new #COMMSOCHeroes!
For this academic year, The DLSU-D Communication and Media Society, AKA COMMSOC, has the theme #COMMSOCHeroes. We, the organization, believes that everyone is a hero and they are just waiting for the time for it to be unleashed.
It has been three months since the start of classes and the start of COMMSOC’s new academic year to do it’s job.
On the first week of classes, last June 22 until 26, we have set up a booth at the lake park to invite people to be a part of the organization. We have set up games, interacted with members and friends, and shared what we are about.
Here are few of the pictures from the recruitment week.
The officers were posing before the camera. They could get really goofy when there’s a camera.
COMMSOC members posing for the Photo Booth.
Here are a few pictures in which the officers and the members are bonding.
It was definitely fun to see old and new faces visiting the booth. What a good way to start the new academic year!
Welcome, A.Y. 2015-2016!
