neither nolan's odyssey nor epic the musical are faithful adaptations of the original, but one is better than the other and here is why
nolan's odyssey is about a man who is guilt ridden because of his war crimes, and the fact that he fought the war for 10 years for basically nothing. he is trying to get home and is just having really bad luck along the way, but enough good luck to get out of it alive.
it's a decent premise for a movie but it is not the odyssey, that is not what odyssey is about. it is a metaphor for modern wars, presenting americans as the guilt ridden heroes, like in all american war movies. my hatered of such movies aside, it delivers that particular message fairly well, but it is an americanized version of greek culture, presenting america (or the western world, whatever) as the successors of the ancient greece, not including a single greek or any signs of greek culture in the movie
epic the musical on the other hand, captures the heart of the story. odysseus feels little to no remorse about troy, and he is stopped on his way home because of his pride. on the way he is both stopped and helped by gods who control his journey almost entirely, and he gets out of bad situations by using his wits and his cunning (and help od athena). again, no greeks involved, but at least it kept the gods' involvement, and you could argue that this was made by (at the time) a small artist
so like i said, neither are following the original perfectly, but only one actually got what the original was about
