DE CAMPO, REYA.
► basics;
Birthday: September 16, 2003 Birthplace/Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana Occupation: High School Senior Portrayed By: Zendaya
► background;
Born in New Orleans to parents who shouldn’t have been so, Reya was raised by her grandmother from just a few months of age. The elderly woman did her best to bring up her granddaughter, who had been severely hard of hearing from birth, pushing to give the girl a fighting chance. Though Reya could be consistently clever and stubborn in her attempts to navigate the world, she still grew up reading lips and speaking simple phrases, though she preferred to use American Sign Language as her primary communication.
As she grew, Reya spent her days listening to the faint, muted hum of the world around her, always aware of her surroundings, and more so, the people around her. Her lack of adolescent desire to readily fit in and find a group of friends to burrow into made it easier for her to turn her laser-pointer focus to things like her studies, hobbies, or sports.
But with the age of 13 came the death of her grandmother, sending Reya into the system. It was a devastating change, not in the least because her parents, forcefully summoned to court individually to take responsibility, refused the chance to regain legal custody of her. Though she braced herself for her new life, knowing it was harder for teenagers to find permanent homes, it was only a matter of months before Indy and Soledad De Campo visited and took a great interest in Reya, and the process to becoming their daughter moved quickly after that.
The De Campo family naturally became a source of warmth and assurance for her; it was easy to accept these women as moms, to place them into a spot that had never been filled in her life before. Reya was accepted and encouraged just the way she was, no matter how many boundaries she tried to push to make sure the walls of her new home were solid. Most especially, Reya was quick to form a bond with the woman who was now her older sister. Shay reminded her deeply of the grandmother she lost what felt like ages ago now and the lengths she would go to make her new family proud were unprecedented.
These days, at 17 years old, Reya is very well adjusted to the life that the De Campos set up for her. She attends a few introductory college courses a week where her sister is studying, always striving to be like and be close to the woman. With excellent grades, a good standing in the volleyball team and an unshakable drive under her belt, it’s apparent to most people that Reya can do anything she wants with herself, anywhere she wants to do it but her reluctance to leave her family remotely in the distance keeps her from even entertaining such options.
