Hey zoologicalpt - you were wondering how we get our blacks to look so dark and prevent smudging! We use 6B pencils for all of our darkest areas. We use a small piece of paper under our hand while we're drawing to cut down on smudging, and change out that piece of paper often so that it's always clean. We do plenty of touch-up with a gum eraser at the end of the drawing process to restore whites to their brightest. Sometimes, we will fill in all of the darkest areas first, spray the page with workable fixative, and then develop the rest of the lighter values. Hope this helps!
Sneak peek #8 for our collaboratively drawn book! Kickstarter launch is fast approaching! With christinamakes
