their agency arranged for them to show up together. ⠀ it’s an inspired move, ⠀ having their two biggest up-and-coming stars mingling beside one another at a party that could, ⠀ theoretically, ⠀ set up their professional careers for the rest of the year. ⠀ she spots him standing across the street from the hotel, ⠀ his punctuality admirable. ⠀ [though, ⠀ she feels like this is the kind of event where it’s acceptable to be fashionably late.] ⠀ grabbing her purse, ⠀ she thanks the cab driver as she steps out of the car.
she looks up at his jacket before meeting his gaze, ⠀ “ ⠀ looks like chivalry isn’t dead, ⠀ after all ⠀ ! ⠀ ” ⠀ she jokes, ⠀ the corners of her lips curling up into a smile. ⠀ still, ⠀ she appreciates the respite from the rain ⠀ — ⠀ a considerable amount of pictures and publicity were expected at events like this ⠀ : ⠀ a feature in Variety or New York Magazine. ⠀ they both know that they need to look their best.
“ ⠀ while i don’t mind the attention ⠀ — ⠀ i’ll take you up on your offer. ⠀ ” ⠀ ( ⠀ seems like he could use her company tonight, ⠀ she thinks. ⠀ ) ⠀ she takes his arm, ⠀ putting on a bright smile. ⠀ “ ⠀ we can be a package deal. ⠀ i heard there was a producer looking at putting on a broadway revival of much ado. ⠀ d’you think they’re looking for a ⠀hero and claudio? ⠀ ”
he couldn't help it— james's mouth kicked up into a wry little smile in spite of his former mood, her joke (though expected) and her very palpable relief relaxing him at once. this thing wouldn't be so bad or tedious after all. he hated being ordered about, told what to do, hated obligations when they were typed in bold print and stuck right under his nose, but his pride was flexible, and mary jane was sweet. he was faintly reminded of wren... the wren that existed before the rot of her cousin, that was. warm and delightful with a grin deeply infectious. not to say he was projecting nostalgia on her at all— they were two different people, his old friend and the new, but the similarities helped him lean into this partnership, it helped him smile a little wider and more sincerely.
❛ that's right. it's alive and well. bars are historically low. ❜ basic kindness didn't need to be applauded, but they were simply teasing; james knew it, kept the energy flowing and sighed out as they stepped through. variety would lap the very picture of them up. he saw heads lift in poorly masked interest, saw faces canting down and mouths whispering. it never took very much. for better or worse, whispers followed james farrow, and she was popular in her own right, a star. he was hoping some of her rays would seep into him; it was painful to be so miserable and he missed when smiling came more frequently. maybe he could leach some of her levity, subtle portions she wouldn't miss.
they continued to chat, casual and easy. she said they could be a package deal, and he agreed, looking at her sidelong as a server passed with deviled eggs. an odd thing to serve at an event like this, but james digressed. he politely rejected the offer of an egg and said: ❛ wait—aren't we already? ❜ they'd come to a halt now. who had stopped them? mary jane or james? he thought he might've. they stood not quite in the center of the room but to the left, still in a good light for others. ❛ a package deal, that is. ❜
feet moving, they began to walk again. yes, he was sure his own preoccupation had stopped them. he spotted a small beverage table that hardly obstructed the room and steered them in that direction, though he was more than open to her suggestions. ❛ all we're missing is a few auditions. i say we find that producer and put in our best. ❜ unless they found them first. eyes watched as they stopped in front of the table. james looked at what they had. a tub of ice, a bottle of something shimmery, bottles of overpriced but free of charge water with a company logo on it. marketing at its finest. he reached for a water, offered it to her, then grabbed one for himself, arms still hooked. ❛ but first, meager refreshment. drink up. ❜
[04.] pulling them away from a party after hours of relentless teasing. (jamesoliver - could work for fantasy verses too)
𖤝 stages of intimacy ! [accepting].
the drink had settled warmly in him, eradicating the fright of nerves and headache of clanging swords; the grove was safe, what more could they ask for? as the drow’s ambitions were frantically repelled, they had all returned home to the wider camp, trudging for each step of the way. at the gates, they were greeted as heroes, bedraggled and worn down but no less glad for it. with their business resolved, and the the druids tempered by halsin’s return, oliver found himself finally at rest. there were to be celebrations, halsin declared, and the whole host of his company would meet them at their camp. it had been lit to spectacular wonder, & the bard, propelled by a few smiling tieflings who had taken a liking to him, had egged his shied nerves to a small stage. merrily, he had played them a song of summer on his flute.
a cadence of his song and play had eventually drawn the attention of james, who watched him with a face he couldn’t quite pin down. was it melancholy or envy, or something close to ache? he had smiled at him from across the campfire, & once the business of his entertainment was complete, he was swept away to the side by his companion. flush faced, he muttered how the drink had fed him an unnatural bit of confidence to pull such a thing off.
and perhaps it had also given him the courage to stare. first, at james’ mouth, to indulge in how kindly he spoke to him or how they pursed together in thought— or perhaps flirtation?
and his hands too, were guilty of this profound desire. ever so lightly, the pads of oliver’s fingers would rub the elf’s hip bone out of pleasure. only as the influence of drink faded did he become acutely aware of the consequences of his all his dozen little actions. [how very mild his teasing had been! mild, or so he thought it; this was not quite the case in the eyes of the lover now encroaching towards him quickly, until he was blissfully cornered.] the bard was grinning flushed & boyishly, stammering with a fool’s excited nervousness. ❛ w-what? seduce you? you can’t be... i couldn’t seduce a thread through a needle, jamie, i swear it. but you, on the other hand— ❜
james stared at oliver, grey eyes seeming to darken as he pressed ever closer; the bard would find himself nudged back, trapped between tree and shorter companion, james's hands hovering for a while before his right palm splayed flat over oliver's heart. the thumping he felt was comforting, a steady sign of life. and when the beating increased, picking up fervor, he smiled, mouth twitching helplessly, feeling a rush of delight and undeniable power. it always excited him, to see his influence over oliver. his own insides were always twisted up by want when it came to the other, he felt always at risk of keeling over in utter love. it warmed him right up, to see his feelings reflected. even scant displays of it. there was nothing he wouldn't lap up.
but @yharnum was oblivious. he only seemed to act true to his heart when his thoughts were slowed; the drinks they shared made their blood hazy, made everything warm, confidence surging. james wasn't a fool; but nor would he indulge his doubt. all night, his nerves had been alight, every brush of their fingers, every heavy-lidded look and smile and grasp building his hopes heavens' high.
❛ couldn't you? —... what have you been doing all night, oliver? ❜ hand flexing against oliver's chest, he seemed to edge closer, his chin turned up ever so slightly. above, the moon and stars. the lights shone reflected on the grass. some chatter still echoed about them, celebrations that hadn't yet died out. james swallowed, throat bobbing. ❛ all your touches, your looks. the lovely song. the smiles. what was that if not seduction? you are beautiful, i only wish you saw it. ❜ not a break in his intensity, but a warming of it. james smoothed his hand down oliver's chest, flattening imagery wrinkles. to hell with the fire and the drink and the smiles. all james saw was him.

i wasn't dishonest in the traditional sense.
❛ i understand, ❜ james said, voice a near whisper, and he meant it, words honest in the cool night— they sat on a soothing patch of grass, legs crossed. the stars twinkled above their heads. his mouth was full of red berries, or remnants of it, the rich wine and the fruit sweetening his breath, making him sleepy, warm and melting. logic told him to rest, and yet here he was, talking well into the night as the others dozed. @nightorne, too, was fighting sleep, or else it eluded her. he found himself concerned, wanted her to be alright, energized for the morning, but was selfishly, undoubtedly happy for the company. the dog at her feet twitched for a moment, deep in blissful dreams, curled close to her, clinging. an oddly tender sight in such a dismal setting. perhaps not all good things were lost.
their eyes met and held, both of them confident souls, and he carried on, having paused for contemplation for only a few seconds. ❛ secrets and half-truths are power. protection. when control is lost and everything remains uncertain, they are all we have. conceal what you must. if you say you are with me, ultimately, i believe you. i trust your intentions. do you trust mine in turn? ❜ grey eyes raked her face, then, searching, knowing that in spite of her expressive gaze she held secret multitudes. far more within, probably, than on the surface, so much he did not yet understand. he wouldn't be insulted if she were weary; faith could not be spread everywhere. ❛ no... let me rephrase that question. do you want to? ❜
