These days most sticks of #RAM will have at a minimum 8GB capacity, these three sticks from the early 90s are 1MB each! In other words a regular 8GB stick of RAM has 8,000 times the capacity than the sticks you see here. Made by #Mitsubishi these are 30-Pin SIMMs (Single In-Line Memory Modules) which were the type of memory used in almost all 486 machines and even some earlier #Pentium class machines. Here’s a well-preserved #Toshiba Satellite 110CS laptop that was brought in this week for #recycling. First introduced in June 1996 the 110CS featured a 100MHz #Pentium processor, an 810MB HDD, and 8MB EDO RAM expandable to 40MB. As you can see it booted up on the first try (and quickly!), which is a testament to the quality of the machine and the care taken by its previous owner. We all know about the iMac but have you heard of the eMac? Introduced in 2002 the Apple #eMac (short for Education Mac) was, as the name suggests, meant to be sold only to educational institutions. This is the #Argus 500 Model 554 slide projector, built in Ann Arbor, Michigan, presumably from the 60s. What we know for certain is that this is in pristine condition and is still working, which is pretty impressive considering it’s age. We find that old projectors that come in for #recycling are more often than not in great condition- it seems like back in the day everyone bought a slide projector but never used them…guess people really didn’t want to watch slide shows and we can’t blame them! This is the #OLPC XO, also known as “The Green Machine” or “The $100 Laptop”, released in 2007. OLPC (One Laptop per Child) introduced the XO as a low cost laptop for children in developing countries, it was designed to be durable and to use minimal power (2-3 Watts) by using a 1 GB flash memory instead of an HDD. The prototype even came with a hand crank to generate electricity but that idea was dropped early in development. Speaking of behemoths here are a couple of 19” CRT monitors, a #Dell UltraScan P990 and a #ViewSonic G790, both from 1998. A lot of the older items that come in for #recycling tend to make us nostalgic - not so much with CRTs, these things weigh over 50lbs each and are incredibly unwieldy. This behemoth is the #Pioneer Rondo 2000 receiver, manufactured in the mid to late 1970’s. The hardboard back suggests that this is a budget model but we don’t really care because the aluminum face plate and wood veneer looks so sharp! It looks a little bulky to us now but at one time this was the smallest and lightest portable phone on the market. First introduced in 1989 this is the #Motorola Digital Personal Communicator, also know as the MicroTac 950, which is essentially a simplified and lower cost version of the revolutionary MicroTac 9800X. This originally retailed for around $1,000 USD ($2,400 today) so even for a lower cost version it was still pretty pricey!
