Singapore's top fashion competition open for entries
Back in its fourth installment, Audi Star Creation 2013 is now inviting aspiring fashion designers from Singapore and Asia to send in their entries for the region’s top fashion design competition.
Designers vying for one of the 12 spots on the Audi Star Creation runway at Asia Fashion Exchange in May 2013, have from now until January 31, 2013, to get their collections entered.
The winners of Audi Star Creation 2013 will each receive S$10,000 in cash, a one-year internship with leading fashion retailer FJ Benjamin and the chance to develop a capsule collection that will be launched at the Audi Fashion Festival 2014 in Singapore. On top of that; the winner whose collection best embodies the “Audi design spirit of innovation, technology and progression” will also receive an additional S$10,000 and the Audi Young Designer Award (AYDA).
In order to enter Audi Star Creation 2013, designers need to be between the ages of 16 and 35 years old and be an Asian citizen; they will need to submit six original and previously unreleased designs and have not had more than two years in the fashion industry or be retailing their designs or labels during the period of the competition.
The designs will be judged on creativity, originality and commercial viability by a panel of fashion industry experts including Mr Douglas Benjamin, CEO of FJ Benjamin (Singapore) and Mr David Wang, vice-president, Textile & Fashion Federation (Singapore); other judges will be announced closer to the event.
“What we are ultimately looking for are designers who have a clear point of view or design DNA, and who can infuse that with global fashion trends, resulting in a commercially viable and globally appealing collection,” says Mr Douglas Benjamin.
The theme for this year’s Audi Star Creation is “InspirAsian”; designers should create “internationally appealing collections that draw from the canvas of possibilities Asia presents in terms of colour, culture and fashion history”.
In 2012, Audi Star Creation had a record 255 entries from 13 countries including Japan, South Korea and Vietnam; the winners – China’s Roderic Wong, South Korea’s Ko Young Ji and Thailand’s Soravit Kaewkamon – will all be launching capsule collection during the Audi Fashion Festival 2013 in Singapore.
Another fashion design initiative, the Singapore Designer Attachment Programme (SDAP) that helps fashion companies provide internship opportunities to the Audi Star Creation finalists was set up by TaFf in 2012; this has already led to two placements for aspiring young designers.
