tl;dr
Born in Navan, Ireland, he and his family moved to Chicago when he was six years old. The adjustment wasn't an easy one for him, struggling to get used to city life when all he'd known before was a more rural one.
His parents impressed upon him the need for him to set a good example for his two younger siblings, raising him to look after the people around him and by all accounts, they did too.
It was only as he grew up and started noticing things that didn't add up that he began to see that maybe his parents weren't the glowing example he'd once thought them to be. They turned a blind eye to criminal activity, looking the other way when it suited them, their hands never truly dirty but also never clean.
When he was fourteen his parents' restaurant was burned down, killing them during it, and he watched the police and the justice system fail to find anyone responsible for it.
He and his siblings moved in with their aunt in New York and tried to find some sort of normality. They did for the most part, their lives mingling with the children his aunt and uncle fostered.
Over the next four years he found himself dealing with his grief by acting as an older brother to the younger children who came under his aunt's care. While not all of them were there for long
As he got older he watched more and more of them give up on their future and get entangled in one of the criminal groups in the city.
Tried out for the fire service to follow in his uncle's footsteps despite making it through the training, he quickly felt he'd be better elsewhere.
Has been part of the police force since he was 21 but became jaded over the years from cases falling apart or being thrown out, unable to touch those who were the cause of everything he deemed wrong with New York.
He was hospitalised about a year ago after intervening to help his neighbour in a domestic abuse situation.
He was in hospital when he found out that his brother had been arrested after he'd been caught carrying out a crime. As the case progressed it became clear that he'd followed in their parents' footsteps, getting entangled with the gangs in the city.
Personality
From a young age his parents impressed a strong sense of responsibility and duty into him, even if their motives were later found to be self-serving. He took his role as eldest seriously, both with his own siblings and his foster siblings, feeling it was his duty to protect them. This trait has continued, along with his pursuit of fairness, leading to him feeling as though the police was his calling. But his idealistic view has become undoubtedly jaded over the years, leaving him sometimes brusque and distant from people. After a childhood with absent parents he struggles to express his feelings with words, much preferring to show it through his actions. There's a lingering feeling of being a burden and so he still feels uncomfortable accepting help from others. He craves balance and stability but has always struggled to get them for himself, instead settling for trying to create them for other people.
Headcanons
His rottweiler, Bo, is only nine months old. He took her in after a neighbour was unable to look after them, finding her to be a bit of a handful. She still is but he enjoys the challenge.
For the first few years of his career he saved up, eventually he had enough money to buy a rundown house in his neighbourhood. In his free time he restored the house and has been allowing the family he sold it to to slowly pay him back over the last few years. He's now onto his third property.
Will absolutely do any kind of handiwork for his friends ( or even the people he's not so friendly with ) believing that tradesmen overcharge.
Conall still hasn't visited his brother in jail despite it being over a year, struggling to come to terms with the choices the other Ward made.
Has a collection of house plants that have always been very well tended to and he's always looking for the next challenge to rescue from the grocery store or garden centre.
Got into baseball as a teen when his uncle thought he needed somewhere practical to put the lingering anger he felt from his parents' deaths. He still plays when he has the time.
