I think every musician should talk a little about their pieces before playing them, I mean, you know what youāre playing, your teacher knows what youāre playing, but the audience does not, and itās our job as musicians to transmit the composerās intention. I think this is even more important to singers, specialy when they are singing some kind of story in a language that the audience does not recognise, and to those playing 20th and 21st century pieces, because for most people itās just music with some random notes at some random tempo that does not sound that appealing, and they all actually have a purpose. I think this can make a huge diference on how people get the message we try to pass
i like this idea. itās common practice for singers to do this (this was drilled into my training). though i donāt think iāve ever actually introduced a piece i was playing on violin ⦠interesting
Music at that time was specialā magical evenā and its effect would have been diminished by constant presence even if that were possible for the musicians, which it was not. David Lindley, indeed, points out that, in contrast to the modern use of filmic underscoring, music in Shakespearean theatre was āalways part of the world of the play itself, heard and responded to by the characters on- stageā.
As Tiffany Stern notes, āno Shakespearean ghostās entrance is flagged by sinister music ā or by music of any kind ā as would happen in a modern filmā. Actors speaking without amplification could not compete with a musical ensemble, whether in an indoor or outdoor theatre, though it is possible that a lute or viol might occasionally continue through portions of dialogue.ā
āMoreover, without the ubiquity of recorded music that we enjoy today, music at that time was specialā magical evenā and its effect would have been diminished by constant presence even if that were possible for the musicians, which it was not. David Lindley, indeed, points out that, in contrast to the modern use of filmic underscoring, music in Shakespearean theatre was āalways part of the world of the play itself, heard and responded to by the characters on-stageā.ā

this is an example of defamiliarization, where something totally normal, conventional, and ordinary - like honkwiching - is taken and described as something that sounds weird and foreign
i aboslutely deserved to become the popular version of this post
