“ hmmmmm, i try to stay away from them as a rule, ” ever since her fall when she was a kid, anna was heavily discouraged from exploring anything higher than five feet. “ but it’s safe, right? like they strap you in and all that? what about your stuff - what happens if your wallet falls out? or maybe i guess if you have pockets, you could use those … ”
“of course it’s safe,” he replies, though one can never be quite so sure. part of the joy comes in the lack of certainty, he thinks, but he is not sure sure that the person in front of him wants to hear that. “i recommend making sure that everything is secured to your person. haven’t you seen the pictures of people at theme parks? with their funny little fanny packs and all? well it’s definitely not for fashion, i can tell you that. it’s to keep their things safe.”

the venom in her voice stings, yuki can admit that to herself. the criticism is, of course, true. eloise’s family was old money, through and through, and she felt them looking down on her. yuki was new money, just as thoroughly, flashy and more overly involved in everything she ever had a hand in. their… fling was just the same as her business. something she threw herself into head first. she grimaces as she’s forced to realize that eloise howell has the capability of killing her shop with one off-hand comment. “i apologize, miss howell,” she says, bowing more to avoid eye contact than anything. she can hear her father in the back of her head scolding her for being so rude to a customer, regardless of their past. “please, anything you like, you’re free to take. it’ll be on the house. i should not let my personal issues color my interactions with customers.” she straightens herself back up, still avoiding eye contact. “please, allow me to make this up to you.”
eloise can’t help it; she scowls at the way that yuki defers to her, at the way that she stops fighting back just like that. it should feel like victory, red hot and amazing. instead it stings like defeat, like betrayal, like everything wrong in the world all at once and it is with great effort that she swallows something down. something that she won’t put a name to, but something that tastes a hell of a lot like grief. “oh, stop with all of that. i don’t want to hear it. dammit. just. ugh. you know my size, my address. here’s...” she flips open her wallet, counts out five hundred dollars, and slams it onto the counter. “five hundred. pick something flattering. and the cost should not be a single penny above the money that i have given you. deal?”

Maverick smiled brightly at Eloise. “Ah, I guess I do! Not really sure why I would need an advantage really. You seem pretty swell! Do people say swell anymore?” He rambled. “Hm.. rough day?” he asked when she asked for another. “Oh! I guess I could tell you my name, huh? I almost forgot, really.” He continues blabbing as he goes about making her another drink. “I’m Maverick Hare! I just moved here. Like, literally just moved here. Ah, I’m rambling, aren’t I.” He sucked in a breath as he sheepishly scratched the back of his head. “Sorry, ‘bout that.” He huffed a laugh, handing her another cup. “Anyways! Penny for your thoughts?” he smiled cutely.
“plenty of people say swell,” she replies with a smile; she does not mention that she mostly hears the word coming from the mouth of older men with more money than sense and a penchant for younger women- and for wanting to get into her pants. he seems nice enough, and though she could never deign to be friends with him, there is nothing wrong with being companionable to the person who is making your drinks. “literally just moved here,” she repeats, tasting the words as she says them, rolling them about on her tongue. what must that be like, to not have lived here for ones entire life? “well where did you come from, maverick? that must be much more interesting than whatever thoughts are in this fanciful head of mine.”

“Why– you’ve never had sparkling grape juice? Well I’d say it’s everything short a glass of champagne, minus the alcohol, of course– I don’t really drink on the week days, with a little extra sugar. I guess, there’s nothing really sparkling about it, ‘cept how sparkling it’s supposed to make you feel.” she holds her arm out for hooking– as if she were a part of the trio in that old Wizard of Oz movie who’d just gotten done singing a tune about lions and tigers and bears. “Though, I suppose we can add sleeping in a tree to our list before the day’s done. I haven’t done that since I was a little girl, though– it’d cause my step mom to worry and fret and I just don’t have the time for that in my life anymore.”
“It’s nothing too official– I guess a little moniker I’ve given him.” though it was a name Jessie, herself, had dubbed the little rascal over the past couple of weeks. every time she visited the town center, it seemed the effervescent squirrel was there, laying his claim to every invisible nut in the tiny meadows. “I actually don’t think he likes it when we call him that.”
“well a bottle of champagne hardly has any alcohol at all!” eloise exclaims, baffled. it’s not as if a bottle of champagne is enough to get anyone drunk; she does not have a lot of experience with the drink, as none of it ever seems to be up to enough quality to make her father want to try it. in fact, the only time that’s she’s ever had champagne was at fancy brunches when her father wasn’t looking- not because he wouldn’t approve of her drinking, but because he wouldn’t approve of the drink. “but if it doesn’t have any alcohol, how does it make one feel sparkling?”
“you’re telling me that you have slept in a tree.” the words come out in a near deadpan, though eloise manages to keep them light enough so as not to offend. though it is becoming more and more clear by the second that there is nothing at all that eloise has in common with the person standing in front of her, she cannot bring herself to walk away. there’s just something interesting, here. something different. “how does that even come about? are you not worried to fall?”

‘ i understand . and even with people , they don’t make the best choices , do they ? ’ she thinks of her father , marrying perhaps one of the worst people in the world , while he is one of the best people she knows . ‘ it’s a 200 dollar adoption fee , but she’s been dewormed and everything . practically ready to go home ! oh , uh - she has the coloring and fur of a german shepard , so let’s go with that . they’re pretty famous dogs too . ’
“german shepard- that’s a good one. a very respectable breed. 200, you say? well let me ask just one question for you- for 1000, would you do all of the supplies shopping for me as well? i know so little about the care of dogs, i’m afraid. but in looking to move out of my childhood home soon, i am so worried about being lonely. you understand, i’m sure?”

“just you,” yuki repeats, tossing her head back. “face it, eloise, it will always be just you.” there’s the eloise she knows, the one she’s come to expect over the recent months. she’s almost relieved that the venom is in her voice again. “i like all things i do to have a personal touch. something you would never understand, dearest.” it’s easier for yuki to square her shoulders, appear above everything and better than everyone in the moments where people try to punch down. “i was just offering small talk, eloise. you know, as polite society so asks? or is that just an expectation your family has of other people?”
“i love how you pretend as if you know anything at all about my family, darling. the family that you couldn’t bear to spend more than a few moments with at a time, the family that you hate on principle.” their relationship, if one could call it that, had been short lived but intense, incredible, invigorating. so few things brought them together. so many things drove them apart. eloise drove them apart, and being angry makes it easier to remember why. “it was a mistake coming here. i thought i would do you a favor, buy some new summer clothes at your precious little boutique. i didn’t expect to find you here.”

“ so, you wouldn’t wanna add anything? nothing? not even a … laser tag stadium or an amusement park? not gonna lie, an amusement park sounds awesome. i can’t remember the last time i was on a roller coaster. now, that i think about it, i don’t think i’ve ever ridden a roller coaster, have you? i guess maybe that’d be my answer. a roller coaster. ”
“a roller coaster could be a lot of fun,” he replies with a laugh. the person standing in front of him has a lot of energy, rambling from topic to topic without a care in the world. it’s awfully endearing, though he’s not the one to embarrass her by saying it aloud. “i’ve been on a couple. they’re a lot of fun- you should definitely try one when you have the chance. how do you feel about heights?”

‘ technically , it’s classified information . ’ but also technically … rosa lai rules the fbi in this town , so with a crinkle of her nose : ‘ but quite frankly , i could give less of a shit . so - there’s this guy , he’s terrible - ’ it’s always a guy , isn’t it ? except this one’s name is bigby and they have this GAME that always ends with a bait and switch , and she just wants to throw his ass in jail . maybe this one can distract her . ‘ he speaks in riddles , knows the area too well , has more connections than me , and he just PISSES me off ! ’
alex watches and listens with rapt interest for a variety of reasons. it’s hard not to pay attention to a beautiful woman. this woman in particular is interesting, sex appeal wrapped in an intriguing personality and way of speech... and the things that she is talking about are profoundly enrapturing. “and i’m assuming that he’s up to something... well, illegal? since people who deal with classified information are usually involved with the law. what’s he doing that’s so terrible?”

‘ oh ? we can work around that . ’ because she is lisa bianchi , and she can turn lemons into lemonade , lemon pie , lemon meringue , and then some . she’s a pro at her job and takes pride in that . ‘ i have multiple scheduling interns , and i am quite good at rearranging things myself . i am sure we could figure something out . what do you do for your job , if you don’t mind me asking ? ’
“that works for me, then. but- what kind of thing is this? what do you need from me? i’m... ya know, flexible or whatever. down for anything within reason, just wondering.” mostly because he has absolutely no idea what he has just signed himself up for, but he’s telling the truth. down for anything, up for adventure. perhaps to say desperate for adventure would be more accurate. “911 dispatch,” he replies with a shrug. “nothing glamorous, but a worthwhile job in my opinion. definitely keeps me busy.”

Maverick was standing behind the coffee bar at Shrike’s as he scanned the pubs lobby, seeing all the new faces he hadn’t had a chance to meet. He longed to talk to any of them, but the past few customers that came in for their coffee just stared at their phones as they waited, and immediately left. He’d been working so much he felt work was the only place he’d get to know anyone, but no one seemed to have the time to stick around for a chat. Disappointed and expecting the next customer to immediately leave, he called out the name written on the cup. “Hmm, that’s a nice name.” he said mostly to himself, not realizing the customer was in ear shot.
“why, thank you,” eloise says with a smile, taking the cup from his hand. the drink is gone in a moment- what can she say? it’s been a rough day if she has ever had one. there was an error in shipments to the museum that ended up getting blamed on her, even though she never laid eyes much less hands on the piece. sometimes, working with the public is way more trouble than it is worth. it is on these days that she mourns her days as a simple debutante, and considers her father’s offer to continue that life. “another, if you wouldn’t mind. though- you have me at a disadvantage. you know my name, but i don’t know yours.”

‘ oh , yikes - ’ but she’s careful with her words , realizes this conversation could go poorly with one wrong move , and that’s not what snow is going for here ! she wants a good relationship with other townspeople , unlike her step mother , who only went for the wealthy . ‘ you … don’t have the same motto , do you ? ’ even then , snow is a bit hesitant to say much of anything .
“well of course not, darling, don’t be ridiculous. blood is one thing with people, it can be controlled. but a dog is a dog is a dog, and this one is absolutely precious. how much? and some advice, if you don’t mind- what kind of dog does she look like, to you? i don’t know much about dogs, but i can certainly have the papers made up. fake pedigrees and the like. she looks well worth it.”

‘ well , then do let me clarify for you : it’s you i’m interested in currently . you have the exact look we’re going for in our next campaign - ’ and lisa already knows which model she wants to pair him with ; one of those delicate blondes , a good opposites attract sort of concept . ‘ we pay 25 an hour with meals included , in case it goes into meal times . ’
"well i do actually have a job,” he says with a shrug. the money sounds good and he would love to have the extra income- there are birthdays coming up, friendship anniversaries... gifts to be bought. “i don’t mind helping out and taking the job and whatever if you guys really need... uh. someone that looks like me for whatever reason. could use the extra cash. but i don’t know if you could work around my schedule.”

“ i’m doing a survey! what’s one thing that’d make your life in woodvale better? ”
alex turns at the sound of the voice, greeting the newcomer with a smile. “hmm,” he hums, considering. “well. i’ll have to say i like all of the options that we have around here. plenty of shops and the like. always something to do. what’s your answer? for your survey?”

“ah, eloise, it’s just you,” she replies, allowing herself to sprawl over the counter again. “totally normal, forgetting that the owner works at the store she runs.” perhaps that was cattier than was called for, but that was how she so often talked to eloise in the past, before all that went down in the past. “relatively, not that i’m gonna complain. why, with it slow, we could even catch up, dear.”
“just me, just me,” she replies, trying to hold herself above such a statement. she cannot stop the way that a red hot flush spreads across her cheeks at what yuki says next, but she can keep herself from verbally reacting to such a comment. “well you’ll forgive me, of course. no one else that i know owns a shop and yet has to spend time running it.” the hint of a sneer crosses her lips, subtle and unkind. “catch up? now why would i want to do that?” it is easier, she thinks, to be cruel than to admit that she misses her.

“First time for everything, ain’t it?” Jessie wiggles her eyebrows at the other, gripping the basket with her two hands. she’d love a companion, to be honest. “Here’s a solid deal, if you help me find the shadiest park in Woodvale, I’ll let you have the first sip of the sparkling grape juice I brought–”
“Also, yeah, that’s Kevin. He’s a rowdy fella, ain’t he? I suppose he’s just making sure we don’t try and sleep in his tree or something…”
"i suppose that's a fair enough deal. but... what is sparkling grape juice, and what is it that makes it sparkle?" she asks. her interest is genuine- even as a child she would have only the finest wine at her parents' parties. some things about poor people have always been so interesting. "is sleeping in a tree on your list of things that you'll try at least once?" eloise says, raising an eyebrow. it is only with effort that she manages to keep her distaste from her tone. "wait- did you call him kevin? are you saying that the beast has a name?"

‘ is there anyone else here ? ’ she questions , brow raising . confidence radiates off of lisa , she used to such reactions . ‘ that is exactly what we need , you see . normal people . ’ fixer uppers . ‘ if everyone looked like my brother and i , we would be setting expectations far too high . inclusivity is very important . ’ she’s building her brand and it’s working so far !
tomas shrugs, smiling tensely. "i don't know- you could have been talking into one of those bluetooth headphone things," he replies, awkward as anything. coming from an orphanage and struggling with money even as an adult, he has little to know knowledge about the newer sides of technology. he only knows about wireless headphones because of tv, in fact. "um. i mean. i've never really considered modeling before. does it... does it pay well?"
