“Oh! I had that happen to my sister. She was working with my other sister doing theater, and then, suddenly, she just seemed so sad,poor dear. It turned out that staying home and being a, housewife so to say, it was much better for her mental health. I’m just glad she’s happy.”  Realizing she was rambling a bit, Anneliese flushed briefly, waving a hand. “No matter.” 

While she enjoyed thrillers, and was herself, a real-life horror, Anneliese didn’t see the appeal of lingering in haunted houses. “I, get my fill for that sort of thing elsewhere. Though, I’ll have to be honest and say that I’ve never really been a video game person.” 

“At least she figured it out!” Yekaterina exclaimed, unduly pleased about the resolution. “Is your other other sister still doing theatre? It sounds so exciting. I always wanted a sibling, you know, but alas,” she waved her free hand in a vague gesture, then bumped hips with Anneliese when she cut herself off. “It’s good to talk about these things! I don’t mind if you ramble.”

“Ooh, do you like movies then? Do you go to places then?” America was just so large, maybe Anneliese would have some recommendations! “That’s fine, video games aren’t for everybody! Though if you ever want to try something, feel free to find me!”

A slight smile sat at the corner of his lips. There was something about this woman that made him comfortable enough to relax and open up.

“Ah, not so much pan pipes… I can’t think of a distinct name, it’s just a long pipe similar to a flute but it points down? Like a penny whistle but wooden and more natural- Older, I think.” He mumbled softly in his native language, most likely scolding himself for the loss of words. “If I had one on my person, I would show you. Oh well. There are plenty of tutors available for hire, or online lessons, I’m sure. I doubt I could teach you myself, even if I had the time or motivation to.”

“Oooh,” Yekaterina said understandingly. The idea was coming to her, but she wasn’t sure what it was called. At least, not in English. 

She hesitated as he mumbled to himself, not willing to interrupt, but curious about what he was saying. Hastily, she pulled out her phone, trying to translate what she was thinking of. “Sopilka, sopilka,” she murmured, typing. “Is, it, uh, a recorder?” She blushed as the rest of his words penetrated. “Oh, I didn’t mean to presume- or make you think I was expecting you to teach me,” she fumbled, trying to explain, “I’ll look into that, thanks.”

Uhh I mean, I came from Egypt, there’s kind of sand everywhere. It gets everywhere. In your hair your shoes between your toes….In your eyes your mouths and I am just…..rambling aren’t I. So sorry…..

Oh that... [silence] explains a lot. [Beat] Yeah, you’re kinda rambling. I’m from Ukraine, so I have almost no experience with sand other than a few trips to the beach. It was pretty messy though. [Shifts weight]

So if you’re living here, does that mean you have powers? Unless being able to stand sand getting everywhere is a power.

Anneliese hummed for a moment, thinking of times on the courtroom floor, near shouting match and a few rounds of drama that had made the news. “Oh, it does! I can’t deny you there. It wears me out on some days, I suppose I’ve just found a path that I enjoy, despite that.” 

A shrug of the shoulders followed. “I don’t pay much attention to it, so I suppose I’m indifferent, but open? If that’s a way to put it, at least. I’m assuming you enjoy such?” She didn’t mention her work just then, though it was a terribly bloody practice for someone to go through with. 

“That’s really good, then. I’ve had a few friends that got jobs that paid well, but they were absolutely miserable doing it.” One of her friends had gone into social work, and it had just about broken Yekaterina’s heart to watch her burn out. 

“Oh, yes!” Yekaterina said, much too enthusiastically, and she blushed. “Especially the surreal sort of stuff, it’s just so much fun!” Well, fun was one way of putting it. She loved being scared. “I really like playing horror games as well, it makes it so much more immersive.”

“Not at the moment no. I’ve usually dealt with endangered species of flowers and plants, so they’ve been pretty cooperative. I’m sure I’ll come across some plant or flower whose personality I won’t like as much. Though the Venus fly trap sometimes gets on my nerves.” Chantal admitted, gently touching the flower petals as she sighed softly. “Yes. Once the coast is clear, I should be home free to become a botanist.”

“I was thinking more of the capability of the human mind when it comes to hallucinations.” She responded, looking back at the woman before her. “How the mind reacts to such hallucinations on a conscious and subconscious level. Though I’m not a neuroscientist, so I could be wrong about all of this completely.” She chuckled softly.

“Huh, that’s interesting. Are the flowers smart, then, in a manner of speaking? If they know they’re endangered.” How did the flowers know they were endangered. Could they sense it? Could they understand human speech? That was... weird. That was really weird to think about. “Would you be able to actively use your powers in the lab? Like when you’re writing papers or doing experiments. Would it be ethical?” 

Yekaterina shrugged. “I have absolutely no idea. I’ve never really inflicted myself on people I like, and the people I was usually experimenting on weren’t usually my friends.” Or had given consent, but she had her justifications and she could sleep easy. “It would also be difficult to upkeep. The energy I need to create a strong, sustained, emotion is high, I’d be wiped out after two or three tries.” Carefully, she bumped shoulders with Channy. “But I think it’s a neat idea, maybe if I get stronger I could try it,” she soothed, immediately trying to be polite.

Sigurd let out a soft sort of chuckle, “Well. I would hope I’m a decent enough person to be considered a gentleman, yes. It was just how people were expected to act back then, I suppose, but I do try to be respectable.”

“Music and art are important in the culture I grew up in, so I did learn a few different instruments. My favorites to play are flute and pipes, as well as the violin. It’s unfortunate you weren’t able to explore music when you were young, but it’s never to late to try. Piano is one of the easiest to learn, and it is right here at your disposal.” He believes firmly in expanding one’s knowledge and experience, so there’s something of an obligation to encourage her.

Yekaterina smiled. He had a nice laugh. “Well, you seem very decent to me, so I’ll at least call you a gentleman, ok?” She was getting the sense that maybe he was older than he looked, but she wasn’t going to ask. 

“Pipes?” Like, pan pipes? Those were the only pipes she knew. Unless he meant a different kind of pipe... an organ? No, that didn’t seem right. She blinked as he indicated the piano in front of them. “I, oh, I mean-” did she want to refuse? Or had he just meant more generally? Hesitantly, she leaned over to touch the keys. “Oh, I, I just wouldn’t know where to start.”

[giggles and answers her in kind] I am nothing but past at this point, my dear! The present is all too fleeting!

[scoffs] If their television is anything to go by, they certainly would. There used to be this show that was all about mansions in America and it was stunning!

[Pouts and swats him again] If you never live in the present, how will you ever see the future?

[Pauses] What would that look like? I mean, that building would have to be absolutely enormous! [Considers] Do you know what it was called? That sounds fun to watch.

Anneliese kept quiet for a moment, but allowed the other to move as she pleased, shifting her arm to keep it from being moved in an uncomfortable fashion. Polite as she could be, Anneliese cracked a small smile. “I suppose it’s difficult, but honestly? It’s likely a boon for this place having political support, and powered members within influential branches.” 

Haunted. A small roll of the eyes, but Anneliese didn’t offer anything else to Yekaterina in any negation of that. “I doubt this place is old enough to have any hauntings, but there are probably some rooms that would qualify as ‘spooky’.” 

She huffed, seeing Anneliese’s point, but Yekaterina had never had much of a head for paperwork. Working with her hands? Great. Filling out forms? No. “I suppose so, though it sounds dreadfully tedious. Government always seems to come with so much paperwork.” 

Frowning, Yekaterina tried not to be too disappointed. Obviously a new building wouldn’t have the same... mysteries, as an old one, but she could hope. Brightening up again at ‘spooky’, she ooh-ed appreciatively. “I can work with spooky! Do you like scary things like that?” It was harder to find other women who liked horror stuff, at least in public, which always confused Yekaterina.

“The behaviors do tend to vary depending to the type of flower and plant. The Venus Fly Trap are a bit mischievous, especially when they’re hungry. They’ll try to eat anything that moves, so you have to be a bit careful with those.” Chantal responded at the last questions as she waved her hand on the ground as more flowers began to appear. “Don’t be. It’s a good question to ask. I chose a flower shop to hide suspicion from the world. Most people would automatically assume that super powered being with the ability the control plants and flowers would be a botanist or some type of scientist. The flower shop is a good cover to start out with.” She explained briefly, the flower jumping down onto the ground.

“Your powers do sound that they could be bothersome at times, but they sound so interesting. Have you ever considered lending your powers for a scientific purpose?” She asked curiously, fixing her hair as soon as the flower was off her shoulder.

“Oh my! That sounds rather fun, though. Are there any flowers you’ve disliked?” Yekaterina asked, now curious. Could you dislike a type of plant? Or did they all have their own personalities? “Huh, that’s really smart, even if it sucks that you can’t be a scientist right now. Does that mean you’re going to start applying to labs or whatever once you’re settled?” Did you apply to labs? She recognized that there had to be some step between ‘student’ and ‘hired’, but she didn’t know what it was.

“Nope,” Yekaterina immediately replied. “How would you even measure it? How quickly I can make someone feel something?” She shrugged, keeping her eyes on the flower. “What purpose would they have?” She considered. “Beyond terrifying men into never catcalling anyone ever again.”

“A stranger walking in on another while he’s in some musically-induced trance?” He shrugged, “I guess I find it amusing. But I don’t mind a little company, it was just too crowded out there.“

Sigurd scratched his chin, wondering whether or not it was okay to reveal his age. Oh well, he’s sure anyone living here would expect some oddities. “It was proper in Victorian times for a man to be able to play- to both impress women and show social status. But it took longer to learn than I care to admit, and I prefer wind instruments.”

“Oh, I suppose so, then,” Yekaterina agreed. Personally, she thought that it wasn’t that crowded, but it seemed she liked people more than this man did. Or maybe he had never lived in a crowded city. 

She frowned, trying to recall her history lessons, or anything specific about the Victorian age outside of Ukraine or the Russian Empire. It had been a good time for her people, she thought, unless she had the time period wrong. “That sounds certainly nice. Are you a gentleman then?” Something about his wording seemed strange, but most everyone here had English as a second language, it could just be that. “Do you play a lot of instruments, then? I’ve always wanted to, but we never really had the money.”

[smiles…but it is a smile better suited for a very old man, one of of fond reminiscence ] I have been many times…I was born somewhere in Kiev area, I believe. I can’t say for sure, though!

[looks at his card again] Oh! That’s makes much more sense than there being four hundred rooms! [laughs]

[Swats his shoulder] [In Ukrainian] Don’t look like such a grandpa! Next you’ll be telling me all about your dacha! Focus on the present. And it’s good you were born in Kiev, it’s where Russia started, after all.

[Nods approvingly] I don’t think even America would create a place with four hundred rooms!

One good thing about moving here is there’s not sand everywhere….. [what a great ice breaker Ramesses] [hes taking off a boot watching a pile of sand pour out of it before laughing sheepishly]

[Looks at sand pile. Looks out the window. Looks back at the pile] Have you- how long- where is all of that sand coming from? [Bends over to inspect the sand more closely] Why didn’t you pour it out earlier? Surely it was uncomfortable?

“Well, I live and work in the state.” Anneliese explained carefully, allowing the other to offer her elbow, slipping her hand around the crook of the other’s arm. “But I moved into the manor proper about a week prior to everyone else. Sorting out paperwork and getting the last of the faxing done.” So much paperwork, so many files. The cabinet in her office was full to bursting at this point. 

Anneliese let out a tiny laugh. “Hopefully, I don’t have the greatest sense of direction, but I’ll do my best for you. What are you interested in seeing?”

Yekaterina thought about state, and the way Anneliese said her words so carefully. She wondered if watching lied underneath her words as well. She smiled instead, positively beamed as the other woman took her arm. “That sounds absolutely dreadful! I mean, you got to move in early, but at such a cost!”

“Well, I’m sure if we get lost, we can get un-lost again.” She mulled over the options. “I don’t know! There just seems to be so many rooms. Ooh, do you have rooms that you have stories about? Or maybe haunted rooms?” That would be so much fun!

Chantal smiled brightly as she nodded. The first person she had met in this place, and they didn’t think of her powers negatively. Maybe coming here wasn’t a bad idea at all. “Yes. I am a botanist, with my specialty being in endangered species of flowers and plants. I currently work at a flower shop as a starting point here.” She explained before clearing her throat.

“You came all the way here from the Ukraine? That must have been tough, especially with the changing climate.” Chantal responded as the flower snuggled close to her shoulder, causing her to chuckle. “If i may ask, what are your powers. You don’t have to answer if you’re not comfortable with the question however. It does seem rude of me to pry when we just met.”

“That sounds so amazing! I’ve always never loved gardening and flowers, but I had never thought to study them!” How could she afford to? Getting a job once she was done with her required schooling was always more important. Though she wasn’t sure what she would have done anyways. She’d had grades good enough for university, though. “Huh, that’s so neat, but wouldn’t you have rather been hired as a botanist?” Yekaterina thought it through and blushed, snapping her mouth shut. “Ah, forget I said anything.”

“Well, it was a rather long flight,” Yekaterina said, deliberately obtuse. Chantal probably meant the weather, but safe than sorry. She couldn’t help giggling again as the flower snuggled like a kitten. “How sweet! Do all flowers act like that, or is it more varied?” Yekaterina pursed her lips at the question, but decided to answer. “I, ah, cause hallucinations, if you will, to either share or create emotion. It can be more bothersome than you’d expect.”

[to his credit, he keeps his eyes on her face] [no need to be sexually objectify a woman he just met…or at all, really] 

[smiles and laughs] I am…Russian-adjacent. I was born their and it is where I have chosen to live for many, many years now.  It is where I am most comfortable.

[takes out his card] Room…205?

Oh, interesting! I was born and raised in the Ukraine, did you ever live or visit there? Can I speak Ukrainian with you? I know Russian and Ukrainian are mostly similar, but sometimes the accents get in the way.

[Snaps fingers] That’s right upstairs! See, the first digit of each room number is the floor. So, 405 is on the fourth floor, and 105 is on the first! C’mon, get your trunk, we’re going up some stairs!

He visibly jumped, hands clattering a cacophonous, almost comical sound from the keys. An inelegant “fuck” was muttered under his breath.

“Just when I thought I had found some privacy, eh? Well.. thank you.” The man remained seated, running a nervous hand through his hair. It was clear he was embarrassed, or at the very least unprepared for this type of situation. “What a cliche, don’t you agree?”

Yekaterina winced with him. “Ahh, should I go?” she asked. Obviously, he hadn’t been aware of her, and she had startled him rather more than she had intended.

And she was now obviously intruding onto his privacy as well, well done. “A cliche? I’m not sure which one it would be, I’m afraid.” She shrugged, not that concerned. She rocked back on her heels, torn between approaching and making a quick exit. “Ah, how long have you been playing?”

After spending a day unpacking, Sigurd was ready to brave the common area and learn his way around this maze of a manor. Several doors to the outside, a basement that smelled of excrement, and one too many crowded calls later he came upon a room where his footsteps echoed on the tile. A ballroom? Sitting area? It was difficult to know for sure.

A few more steps in and his hand landed upon a familiar piece of furniture. With a relieved sigh and a short smile to himself, Sigurd sat down and began to play. [  ♪ ♪ ♪  ]

Following the sounds of the piano, because oddly enough it was striking her as the oddest thing, Yekaterina didn’t have much of an ear for music, but she thought that it sounded light, yet sad. Beautiful in it’s own way, and one she assumed would tug at the heartstrings of a more cultured listener.

The player, and Yekaterina tried not to clomp around on the tile while the music was going, was blond, and from behind looked like a man. Eventually, when the song ended, she clapped politely. “That was beautiful!” she praised warmly.
