I know it’s not much in the face of everything but I have been finding hope & resilience in palestinian poetry these past few weeks and I created a google drive file of poetry collections by palestinian poets that I will keep updating as I keep on reading. I also recommend checking out @fiercynn’s palestinian poets series for more poets + poetry available online
In a Mexican Restaurant I Recall How Much You Upset Me, Ada Limón
"if i was orpheus i would simply not turn around" yes you would. if you were orpheus and you loved eurydice, you would. to love someone is to turn around. to love someone is to look at them. whichever version of the myth — he hears her stumble, he can't hear her at all, he thinks he's been tricked — he turns around because he loves her. that's why it's a tragedy. because he loves her enough to save her. because he loves her so much he can't save her. because he will always, always turn around. "if i was orpheus i would simply —" you wouldn't be orpheus. you wouldn't be brave enough to walk into the underworld and save the person you love. be serious
what i'm learning from the reblogs of this post is that too many of y'all completely misunderstand this whole myth and feel superior for it. let's break down some common reactions!
"orpheus didn't really love her": if he didn't love her, he wouldn't have traveled to the literal afterlife to save her. try again!
"orpheus couldn't follow instructions": who among us has not accidentally, instinctively done the wrong thing at one point or another? even when the stakes were high? try again!
"i'm built different i really wouldn't turn around": if you don't love someone enough to turn around, then you don't love them enough to have gone to the underworld for them in the first place. try again!
"it isn't romantic for him to hurt her just because he can't follow instructions": he didn't hurt her, she was already dead! she just returned to her status quo. she wasn't being tortured in the underworld. try again!
"he turned around because he didn't trust her": no, in the versions of the myth where he turned around because of doubt, it was because he didn't trust hades. he was expecting hades to have tricked him. try again!
i am simply not interested in your misunderstandings or bad faith interpretations. consider making your own post!
bonus comment:
"fuck you i WOULD be brave enough to go to the underworld for the people i love": maybe so! that sentence in my original post was aimed specifically at people who say they wouldn't turn around.

Every look ICONIC! Our lady can NOT flop!
all goofing aside I genuinely don't understand the urge to reimagine Taylor Allison Swift as a secretly queer icon when the pop music scene(TM) is like. literally overflowing with women who actually like women. Gaga and Kesha and Miley and Halsey are right there. Rina Sawayama and Hayley Kiyoko and Rebecca Black and Kehlani and Victoria Monét and Miya Folick if you're willing to get slightly less top 100. Janelle and Demi for them nonbinary takes on liking girls. like what are we doing here. like I'm not even saying you can't enjoy Taylor but why would you hang all your little gay hopes on her.
Isn’t Lady Gaga bisexual?
yes that is indeed why she's on the list of famous women who like women
why have multiple people reblogged this with some horse-assed "um actually most of these people are bi or pan" did I fucking stutter I said they like girls. what is your point. I'm going to kill you.
#op probably has this post muted but the icon is too real.
the icon is because of this post
POV: you make a good post and then encounter tumblr reading comprehension
btw to just clarify for anyone who sees this reblog of this post
op is basically saying something along the lines of "yea ik taylor swift is bi but like. why is she y'all's only lgbtq+ pop icon when there are all these other lgbtq+ people in the pop scene???"
i might have worded this badly but hopefully i got the main point across
hi op here I certainly did not fucking say Taylor Swift is bi

ID: Tiktok captions reading "Taking my daughter to my laser hair removal appt [appointment] so she learns about self care and doesn't feel guilty about it whe she gets older." End ID
the way enforcing harmful and patriarchal beauty standards has gotten rebranded as “self care” and something that is no longer done to please men but now something that is “liberating” and something you do “for you” now is fucking insidious . taking your four year old daughter to watch you get laser hair removal is not “teaching her about self care” it’s teaching her that there is something wrong with her from a very young age, and that she’ll need to spend the rest of her life getting it fixed . you cannot reframe indoctrinating your own fucking daughter into this as a girlboss self care queen move . this is insane.
self care is when you shave your legs… for yourself! self care is when you get a nose job…. for yourself! self care is when you when you spend 200$ on wellness products and diet tips and buy buy buy so much makeup that you need to put on everytime you leave the house or else you are an ugly pig … for yourself! self care is when you buy what the tell you to buy and do what they’ve always told you to do but don’t worry girl. you’re doing this for YOU this time . girl slayyy you are so hashtag crushing the patriarchy. i want to kill myself.
it’s crazy how you can say “i don’t think you should take your 4 year old with you to get your hair removed under the guise of teaching her about “self care” when essentially you’re teaching her that there is something wrong with her body in it’s natural state and she needs to get it fixed through expensive and painful procedures and it’s a shame that self care now essentially means upholding patriarchal beauty standards but doing it “for yourself” this time around” and everyone on this damn site acts like you came into their house. spit into their faces. and personally threw out all of their razors out and then outlawed shaving forever. and they make it their job personally to tell you how um actually they do shave! but they do it for x/y/z reason like i don’t give a fuck if you shave . don’t tell me . i don’t care. im not going to pat you on the back and say “you are the exception here don’t worry you’ve beaten the patriarchy. you’ve solved it. you are doing this for the correct and moral reason. im so proud of you” don’t bring it up to me. i am so done with this post . can everyone PLEASE fuck off.
my singing voice is good for showers and mornings in the kitchen and drunken nights and lullabies for babies who need sleep and im okay with this
i think it’s silly to be ashamed of your art because it’s not in a museum and of your voice because it’s not selling out stadiums. there will always be people who enjoy and appreciate what you can do.
Idk why but this hit me really hard and I’ve been staring at it for a couple minutes.

The stigma of self-inserts is so harmful to the creative process. Relax. Admit it. Everything you make is derivative of yourself, always, no exceptions. You can turn the mirror into tinier and tinier shards or you can make it as big as you want to reflect as much as you want. At the end of the day it's always going to show you inside of it. Pretending otherwise is stupid.
It's not about not using self-inserts.
It's about doing it in a way so that the reader doesn't know.
If I read the book and come to a moment where "oh, this is the author writing about themselves" my interest in the story drops by about 300%. Don't make it obvious and you'll be fine.
Nope. Wrong. Missed the point. It's about using self-inserts. You can make it as obvious as you want. It's perfectly fine. The point is to have fun.
THIS IS ABOUT SELF-INSERTS NOT READER-INSERTS (I misread initially)
Self-inserts! Do them! I won't read em but do em anyways! You're not supposed to appeal to me!!!
Reader-inserts, however. I am not a fan (evil)
"You're not supposed to appeal to me!!! But also if you write reader-inserts I am judging you"
Nope. You're missing the point also. Reader-inserts are also cool and chill. It isn't fucking about appealing to you.
As long as they aren't Mary Sues and clay the best, most coolest person ever who never does anything wrong.
Those characters are lame, let me see then walk into a light pole or get caught acting like a dweeb.
Nope. You're missing the point still. Stop acting like it's acceptable behavior for you to call the earnest creation of art "lame". Power fantasy characters are rad as fuck. Everybody loves seeing John Wick do that shit. You're not just being needlessly rude and harmful to others, you're also just flat out fuckin wrong.
