During World War I, "comfort dogs"—more commonly known as mercy dogs, casualty dogs, or Red Cross dogs—were specially trained canines that searched No Man's Land and the trenches after battles to locate wounded soldiers, deliver first-aid supplies, and stay to comfort the dying.

Finding the Wounded: Equipped with an exceptional sense of smell, these dogs tracked down injured troops hidden in mud, craters, or brush.

Carrying Medical Gear: They wore packs containing bandages, water, and stimulants. Soldiers who were conscious could use these supplies themselves.

Guiding Medics: If a soldier was too badly injured to move, the dog would take a piece of the soldier’s uniform (like a cap or scrap of cloth) and run back to lead paramedics directly to the man.

Comforting the Dying: For soldiers whose wounds were too severe to survive, the dogs stayed by their sides, lying with them and offering quiet companionship in their final moments.

Morale Boosters: Beyond tactical rescue work, dogs like the famous Sergeant Stubby provided deep emotional comfort and a sense of home to troops living through the trauma of trench warfare.
