“Of course I do!” she replied confidently, looking at the ingredients in front of her. “Okay, maybe I don’t, I don’t think I even know how to use this oven.”

“Yeah I could have told you that twenty minutes ago. Should’ve just listened to me and ordered pizza.”

“Yeah well trashed houses doesn’t really compare to deaths so I couldn’t care less about their pretty little houses,” Laurel replied back quietly.

“I don’t think it really matters to them.” He shrugged. “People are just things to them. We ruined their stuff, they’re killing people. It’s all the same to them. Which is why the next move we make needs to end them. So nobody else has to die unnecessarily.”

“I read something about that when I was travelling back up through France,” the boy nodded, frowning. “Lysander was a good guy. I just hope it’s true what they are sayin, that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and not involved in any way.”

Connor hummed. “Guess you just can’t tell anymore, huh?” He mused, running a hand through his hair. “With all these people getting hurt with no distinct pattern... Makes it a little hard to know who you can trust.”

“Yeah, okay. Sure. I’ll just let you keep doing it wrong then.”

“I’m sure between us friends of yours, we can keep you away from her wrath,” Xavier chuckled, sighing himself after a drink. “I wasn’t expecting to come back to this though.” 

“Yeah, tell me about it,” Connor smirked, setting the bottle on the counter. “At least you were away for most of it. You know the Scamander twins? One of them went missing a few months back. Guess he was just found dead or something.”

“Oh shut up,” she rolled her eyes. Piper followed him, only arriving a moment after Connor, a little breathless from the stairs. Even though she wasn’t casting the curse, she felt nervous. “Worst case scenario, it doesn’t work or you kill someone. Best case, we take down a few of those bastards,” she nodded. Piper squeezed his shoulder before dropping her hand. “No pressure. You’ll be fine.”

God, he hoped it worked. Without wasting another moment -- because, really, they didn’t have that much time to spare -- Connor shot the hex at one of the hooded figures. A bright green light filled the immediate area, when it dimmed the death eater lay sprawled on the ground. How bad his injuries were, Connor couldn’t tell, but the color of the spell and the resulting body on the ground seemed to have an affect on the others. Just as he’d thought they would, they started running to save themselves. But Connor couldn’t be bothered with their retreat. He was too thrilled that it seemed to work. “Did it... Did it actually do something?”

Having not been around for the last few months, Xavier never imagined his first couple of days back in town would be that exciting. He was glad for the bottle of beer on the counter. “Another one for this young fella,” Xavier chimed, seeing Connor. “I bet your mother is happy for a few more days before school opening up.”

Connor laughed as he caught the bottle sliding towards him. "My mom? When is she happy about anything?" He asked, knocking back a drink with a satisfied sigh after. "I'm sure the students are happier than anyone. They don't have to deal with her while it's postponed."

“Clearly,” she huffed. Piper nodded, “Let’s go,” she said. She waited for him to give her the clear before following him. Piper gripped her wand, glancing behind them just in case. Hence why she didn’t see the spell coming straight for Connor. “If I didn’t hate Death Eater’s before, I definitely hate them now. How long until we’re there?”

“God, could you whine a little more, Pips? That would make tonight even better.” Connor scoffed, rounding the old building to the back door. Not even waiting for her to keep up, he skipped up the steps and came to the front window. “Guess it’s time to see if this works.” And with that he raised his wand and took aim, ducking behind the wall just enough to avoid being seen.

“I’m not going to…” she trailed off. She would, and if she didn’t die out there, Wesley would kill her for doing something so stupid. Laurel shook in anger. “I just I can’t stand this. Look at what they’re doing.”

“Did you really expect anything different? I mean, they’re probably still pissed about their houses being trashed,” Connor muttered, making sure no one overheard him. “And we’ll get them back for this, too.”

Emma pushed her way through the crowd, moving opposite against them in attempt to find Connor. She stopped when she spotted another familiar face instead and instantly felt relieved. “Grayson!” Emma slipped past a few people moving past her and grabbed onto him. “Thank God.”

She pulled back and looked at him. “I can’t find Connor anywhere. And his phone’s going straight to voicemail.”

Grayson turned at the sound of her voice, letting loose a deep sigh in relief. He’d been looking for her since it had gone dark, his anxiety growing with every second he couldn’t find her. He held her tight, stroking her hair and letting himself relish the moment for a second. “It’s okay.” He murmured, although he wasn’t sure he even believed it himself.

He furrowed his brows, the pit of worry in his stomach returning at her words. “I’m sure his phone just died, have you tried looking in the shops? Maybe he managed to get in one to stay safe.” Grayson suggested, glancing around them. “Come on.” He tugged on her hand, leading her down the street as he helped her look for their son.

It wasn’t his ideal situation, being stuck in a darkened shop while Diagon Alley was lit only by the fires caused by whatever damage the Death Eaters had done. But there was, ducked down by the window to avoid detection as the masked figured ran past. As much as he wanted to fight back, he knew that it would be best if he lie low for now. His mother would kill him if she caught him trying to play hero. When the coast was clear he snuck out the back door, stumbling out onto the street. After a moment of wandering, he saw the familiar raven hair of his mother and he sprinted over to her.

“Mum,” Connor’s arms wrapped around his mother, recognizing the look on her face as he approached. “I’m fine, before you ask. I didn’t get hurt. Bad, anyway. Kinda banged up my knee a bit, but no big deal.”

“My stuff? What stuff? I’m not even drunk yet,” Brinley replied, looking at him with a puzzled expression, “For the love of Merlin, how drunk are you right now?”

“Adequately drunk.” He answered with a shrug. “How are you not? You’re breaking New Year law right now.”

“No time like the present,” she said with a shrug. Piper nodded, she poked her head out of the alley way, going back to her spot when a spell whizzed past her. “Merlin,” she breathed. “Really? At the stroke of midnight? Why are Death Eaters so dramatic?”

“You’ve met a pureblood, right? They’re all dramatic,” Connor chuckled, ducking his head as he checked the area. “There’s a shop across the street we could hide in. There’s a second floor, even. Give us a better vantage point.” After a moment, he started forward, signaling her to follow. Connor cast a quick protection charm as a spell flew towards him; he shot off a stunning hex or two in retaliation as he pressed forward.

Piper pushed her back against a brick all of a building when Death Eater’s marched the street of the Alley. She turned to Connor, a weary grin on her lips. “This might be a bad to time to ask, but did you have a chance to work on your spell?”

“This may be our only chance to test it.”

For a moment he looked at her like she was crazy. “Right now, like right now?” If he was seen casting it, it would no doubt bring about a lot of questions from the Aurors. Questions he really didn’t want to answer. Connor checked around for any signs of an escape route. “Let’s see if we can find some sort of cover.”

“Connor, let me out, I swear to god.” Laurel wasn’t usually like this, she wasn’t usually angry but seeing death eaters, made her reckless, made her want revenge for her mother.

“Seriously? You run out there and you’re gonna do something stupid and probably get yourself killed. It’s bad enough it’s already happening, but we don’t need to go running out there half-cocked, so calm down, alright?”
