Behind the Scenes of The Day of the Doctor (part 3)
Excerpts from Benjamin Cook’s interview with David Tennant and Matt Smith from DWM #467
DWM: What were your expectations of playing opposite each other
David: I didn’t quite know what to expect.
Matt: I didn’t either, because it’s quite a solitary journey, isn’t it? It’s quite a solitary party. But I’ve had great fun doing it. It’s weird, we’re coming to the end of the shoot, but I sort of feel like I’m going to see you at work quite a lot.”
David: It could have gone either way, I suppose. When you’re playing the part, you’re quite ‘out front’, aren’t you?
Matt: Yeah, the Doctor does his own thing, and from take to take you can sort of do your own thing, and that’s been slightly different -
David: Yes
Matt: - because you’re like the three musketeers a bit more.
David: What’s nice about that is, there’s a shared responsibility. You’ve got someone to confer with, and you don’t have all the lines to learn yourself.
Matt: Suddenly you go, ‘God, this is what normal jobs are like.’
David: [Laughs] Yeah, the odd day off!
DWM: So have you and Matt found yourselves mirroring each other’s mannerisms?
David: Some days we’ve actively worked on that
Matt: Although, it didn’t take much. I’m blowing smoke up our arses here, but it was quite immediate. It was quite quick. David and I were in time. We were in sync.
David: That’s because we think at the same speed. John Hurt told me that.
Matt: Exactly. L-O-L.
David: I wonder if all the Doctors are like that? Maybe not. Maybe.
