The architect must take a position, one that necessarily has ethical consequences, and for which words, ie. theoretical discourse, is nevertheless indispensable. Unlike the critic and the philosopher, the architect must embrace the contradictions between perception and logic, the slippage between architectural intention and realization, and the unpredictability of the future's judgement upon the acting present, and resolve or confuse these aporias though his/her personal imagination.

STAGE 1.3 Program

The proposal program for the intervention on Læsø will revolve around the changing perspective towards nature conservation as a method that must inevitably involve humanity as a participant instead of a menace. This approach is the necessary trajectory in the relationship humans have to the surroundings and in time would become relevant for more than natural parks and perpetuate our everyday thinking towards nature and ecology.

“As the global population expands, along with its corresponding need for resources, the notion of wilderness is likely to become increasingly theoretical. And if we are to maintain any semblance of a natural world outside those constricted areas, we will need to be less dogmatic about what is human and what is natural. Combine this with the ongoing battle to maintain diversity in a world where the global market favors optimized solutions leads to a scarcity of the complex and difficult. This trend among crop production results in dominant strains of our typical fruit and vegetables being the primary associations most of us have with food. Beyond just limiting the diversity of these plants species to a select few, we are also limiting the common knowledge of future generations of the diversity of plant life around them.

Læsø is a perfect location for an intervention hoping to expand knowledge and use of a diverse range of both edible crops as well as a variety of local fauna, as the island already has a strong history of human intervention in its natural history. The island has gone through an almost complete deforestation in its recent history and all the grown landscape is a product of human intervention in partnership with nature. This encourages a more hands on approach to nature.

The proposed program would consist of a building to facilitate a library for local seeds to be gathered and shared by the locals and visitors and thus spread throughout the island. This act of seeding the island would be as natural as typical methods used in nature, like wind or migratory birds, just instead it is done by a large intelligent mammal; us.

The proposal would also engage with the landscape in a minimal way that would encourage visitors to explore the landscape farther and would facilitate small necessities for people wanting to explore the surroundings; such as a water drinking station, public washroom and warming area.
