Like I think the most emblematic missing the forest for the trees instance of this is Jacobins criticism of Bill Gates Foundation being "it's reputational whitewashing for what he did in the nineties!!!!!" while Vox had a considerably more detailed piece about how the Gates Foundation had basically fucked up public health globally by pushing McKinsey and it's uselessness + they now have disproportionate influence over global health and it's solutions now which is a convo worth having

Any advice for recent graduates who have had their search for a full-time job upended by covid-19 and the ensuing economic crash? I was recruiting for off-cycle roles in front office finance and I’ve had final round interviews be delayed indefinitely, job openings cancelled, and new job postings have slowed to essentially nothing. Beyond that, regret for past decisions to not take return offers has felt pretty paralyzing – how do I get back into the right mindset?

……..I just realized I haven’t been flexing my power.

Oh sure, we folks on tumblr love to complain about corporate greed. But it turns out I can do more than complain. I’m a little older and more established than the base demographic here. Meaning to say: I have investments. Some of my money is in the stock market. And as a shareholder, I get these proxy ballots that I’ve been ignoring.

Why? Oh, usually they want shareholders to approve the new board of directors and some accounting firm to audit their books, and that stuff is… dry. I don’t know the names. And sure, let the bean-counters at Ernst & Young check your numbers. The Board of Directors recommends you vote yes. Whatever, sounds great, but I don’t care enough, so into the bin it goes. Abstain.

But THEN – I started looking more closely at the things that shareholders were being asked to vote on beyond the yawn business and hoo boy, there are some real gems I found hiding in the proxy ballot communications. They variously state, and I quote, “The Board of Directors recommends that you vote AGAINST the following proposal.” Here’s a short list of some things some Boards of Directors want me to vote against:

Johnson & Johnson: Report on Governance of Opiod-Related Risks

United Technologies Corporation: Shareowner Proposal to Create a Committee to Prepare a Report regarding the Impact of Plant Closure on Communities and Alternatives to Help Mitigate the Effects.

Someone, it seems, does not want to hear the bad news. Why, then they might be held accountable!

Well, guess what, guys? I’m paying attention now.  I’m not voting against any of these things. Not while I have a stake in your company. Not on MY watch.

Hong Kong's plan for dealing with unrest and coronavirus: Give $1,284 to each person

Hong Kong’s government unveiled a budget packed with giveaways including a one-time cash handout that economists said isn’t likely to spur growth, as the city struggles to stabilize an economy battered by political unrest and the coronavirus.

most of you could have heard about this HK$10,000 handout, but there are more in the budget you should pay attention to. 

but first, how economists view on this.

“This is obviously untargeted and regressive and will not solve the problem of those most severely hit,” said Alicia Garcia Herrero, chief Asia Pacific economist at Natixis SA. “It is like throwing a drop in the ocean for many while you could have used that amount to cure the injuries of only a few.”

Ahead of the budget, accounting firm KPMG LLP pushed for handouts in the form of electronic vouchers to encourage direct spending, rather than saving or moving the cash abroad.

Kevin Lai, chief economist for Asia excluding Japan at Daiwa Capital Markets, is skeptical as to whether Hong Kong residents will rush to spend a cash windfall.

“That sounds like a lot, but would you go out and spend it? The answer is no,” he said. “The economic benefits will only be marginal. Shops and restaurants are screaming for business. It’s not going to help.”
