TIL that the reason lead levels in children’s blood have dropped 85% in the past thirty years is because of an unknown scientist who fought car companies to end leaded gasoline. He also removed it from paint, suggested its removal from pipes, and campaigned for the removal of lead solder from cans.

Yep. It also correlates extremely strongly with an increasing decrease of violent crime. One of the symptoms of low level constant lead exposure is increased aggression and volatility.
“Unknown scientist”? That was Clair Cameron Patterson.
Gas companies are still so mad at him he’s “unknown scientist”, know his name
Daily reminder that health and safety standards like these are what politicians mean when they talk about “deregulation.”
Patterson died 5 December 1995.
Petition to make his date of death a Tumblr holiday celebrated by talking about cool shit the gas and petroleum industries don’t want us to know about, and fighting to continue his work.
Remember to never stop writing even if it's bad

Every year I diagnose at least one cat with renal failure due to lily poisoning. If you have cats please don’t have lilies.

Top 10 university moments?
Def the time a prof noticed I didn't hand in an assignment (no late submissions) and he mentioned it.
"You didn't hand yours in."
"No I don't have it printed."
"Do you want to go print it?"
"No I only did 2 of the questions and I don't think I did them right"
"You should still hand it in. It's better than getting 0.
"..."
"Go print it and get it to me by 12."
I was so embarrassed at not finishing that I was willing to take 0% on that assignment.
I hadn't even bothered on other assignments because I didn't think I could get them done in time.
Just submit SOMETHING.
I submitted a programming final assignment that didn't work and had barely anything in it and I got over 50%.
I'm in a story telling mood tonight
"How do I know if you're paying attention if you don't look like you're paying attention?"
This sentence is a fucking curse Stop saying it ESPECIALLY to kids.
If I look like I'm paying attention? I'm not. I'm FULLY focused on looking like I am tho.
"If you're doodling/fidgeting you aren't paying attention"
1. No
2. If I can't do something Quiet then I'm going to do something Loud
3. If I can't do something Safe then I'm going to do something Unsafe
Not everyone is fully focused at every moment! That's normal!
Instead of setting an impossible standard just accept it and compensate for it!
I took Intro to Accounting. It was not by choice.
It was 3 hours long 2× a week. I had a lab and another lecture right before it. AND I didn't have time for lunch before it.
One day I gave up on paying attention and left early
I realized no one was going to stop me
So 2× a week I would show up to Accounting
If I still hadn't focused by the 40 minute mark I would go catch the early bus home
I passed with a 73
"Go to class, you're paying for it"
Good advice but it's bad advice
Just being in the room and hearing the lecture even if you're not paying full attention can be super helpful!
But when you're focused on how miserable you are? You're not learning anything and it's just gonna get worse.
Figure out when the energy cost outweighs the benefits of being in class.
guys it is NOT funny that the queen died because the IRA painted a tunnel on the side of a cliff and ran into it like it was a real tunnel and she tried to chase them and slammed into the cliff so hard she made a queen-shaped imprint and it is NOT okay to joke about it EVEN IF she made a really loud boing sound effect when she did it
“oh we can’t hold the Queen accountable for the actions of her ancestors!!!”
her ancestors? you mean her dad?
y’all realize she was crowned in 1953 right? Nearly 70 years of imperialism with her face stamped on it. She’s the longest-lived, and longest reigning British monarch.
Y’all look at her and see a kindly withered old gramma with memeability, but completely ignore the amount of damage that she and her family have done to so many countries.
“oh well, what did you want her to do, just walk away from it?”
yes.
Yes, I do expect people to look at the harm that systems they uphold do to the world at large and then actively refuse to continue their participation in them. I do not believe that is too much to ask of anyone, let alone one of the most powerful women in the entire fucking world.
Sorry that I’m not particularly impressed with her #girlboss legacy when the Indigenous Peoples of Canada and Australia are still feeling the monarchy’s effects on their homes and families.
70 years and she never once thought, “Hm, maybe imperialism is a bad idea?”
I hope the old woman kicks the bucket, and I hope that her family continues to disintegrate until the entire thing comes crumbling down. May independence finally come to the people England has been crushing under its boots for centuries.
Also, it’s not even her dad, the Mau Mau Rebellion and the “Malayan Emergency” both ended in like 1960. The British Empire, that she was the head of at the time, used concentration camps to deal with both.
And while this isn’t is bad as crimes against humanity, she has also been directly interfering in the drafting of our laws for years we recently found out and then were expected to forget.
What about Northern Ireland, where British soldiers were killing children and civilians in her name?
Yeah, so many horrible things done in her name, under her watch, I forget them all ffs
All of this! Ireland, Scotland, India, Canada, Australia, and so so many others have suffered under the British Empire.

so, yeah. “ancestors” my ass
and that’s not mentioning that none of these countries ever got reparations and all of them (as well as pretty much any other third world country) are still victims of british imperialism
