the best part of modern art in general is watching people who know nothing about it get very mad at it and rehash arguments that have played out in their entirety long before they were ever born and then smugly end their rant with a nail painting emoji like they did something. just say you don’t get it and the price tags make you mad and save everyone a lot of time

the reason this is so funny on tumblr in particular is, i think, the result of the intersection of three things endemic to this hellsite:

you can’t just dislike something because you don’t personally care for it. everything is either Good Representation or Cancelled

nobody knows anything about history at all, but

they posture like they do

thus you end up with teenagers desperately trying to turn the fact that they saw a blank canvas with a slash in it at a museum once as some sort of moral failing of the art community (but in a woke way, not the Red Scare way), all while working with a version of art history based entirely on, like, Andy Warhol and Dali. and this site is STILL free
