‘Cause I Gotta have Faith-a-Faith-a-Faith
Faith, also known as “The Exfoliator” (more on that in a moment), came to us in a very different manner than most of our residents. Around eight years ago, during our annual Hoe Down event, a young girl approached me and asked if I could take in a dairy cow she knew and loved and wanted to save from a farm. Hearing more about the cow it was clear this farm was a dairy. The girl, named Jacinda, told me how this cow would come up and lick her; she knew her by her ear tag number and recited it to me. I told her that if she could get the farmer to give up the cow, I would take her.
The following year, I saw Jacinda once again at our Hoe Down. And this time, she was very excited to share some unexpected news: The farmer said she could have the cow! Adult confirmation from her mother immediately followed and we scheduled a time for the cow we would name Faith to arrive at Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter.
Eight years prior to Jacinta’s encounter with Faith, a different young girl was in the process of raising a newborn calf as a 4-H project. Her grandfather was a Pennsylvania dairy farmer, and he had offered to purchase Faith at the fair to become part of his dairy operation. Faith joined the dairy herd at 2 years old, but to the disappointment of the farmer, Faith was sterile.
Likely born with a male twin, Faith had acquired the male (XY) component in utero by exchange of some cellular material through the placenta. As a result, she was born a Free Martin – female in appearance, but possessing more masculine behavior and size. Her ovaries did not function, so she could not get pregnant. And because she could not get pregnant, she could not produce milk. Therefore, she was considered just as useless to the dairy as her male counterparts.
In any other world, Faith would have been immediately sent to slaughter, but the granddaughter protested and Faith was allowed to live on the dairy farm despite the fact she could not contribute to production. She was safe… for about five years. And then, her number was up again when the granddaughter was headed off to college. The farmer decided the time had come to send Faith for slaughter.
This is where our Jacinda and her friend Cassidy (along with their mothers, who worked at a local rescue group called Animal Rescue Inc.) convinced the farmer to let Faith go. There was a home awaiting her at Farm Sanctuary; I had promised. So began the second act for Faith.

Faith has been with us since 2008. She lives, loves, and licks her way through each and every day at the farm. Now in her teens, she is starting to slow down just a bit; she joined our special needs herd this year. But this girl’s still got it – that attribute which earned her the nickname “Exfoliator.”
From the moment you meet her, Faith will show you just how she’s earned her nickname. It all starts with very tiny tip-of-the-tongue lick that will quickly turn into a full-on bath with the sandpaper tiger-like tongue of the EXFOLIATOR! She’ll cure you of your dry skin in a way that feels like she’s licked you raw. She has used that talent to apply what feels like a bit too much mousse in the hair and has literally lifted shirts off guests and caregivers with that powerful tongue.
She is very comical and gets right up in your face when you come into her pasture or the barn. When you take a photo it often looks like this:
She runs when you call her name and acknowledges you with just a look if you don’t have anything exciting to share. But watch out if she thinks you do have something to offer; old or not, this gal is quick! She is loved by everyone she meets and is always up for a hug, but be prepared for things to go further! She is after all the Exfoliator!
Please share Faith’s story. Together, we can encourage awareness and understanding about such unique individuals as well as the unfortunate truth about the dairy industry. With a growing number of delicious dairy-free options and recipes, it’s never been a better time to make the switch. And it is one of the easiest ways to honor cows like Faith.
